In this episode we discuss how the Care Oncology Clinic supports cancer patients with integrating repurposed drugs into their treatment regime.
The clinic aims to complement standard treatments with repurposed drugs under the guidance of expert clinicians in order to deliver a safe, evidence based approach. Data is collected in order to improve outcomes for patients with various forms of cancer. We discuss the drug selection process, how safety and efficacy is monitored, what are the findings so far and future directions of the clinic.

In this episode I chat to Dr. Stuart Farrimond.
Dr Farrimond is a science and medical writer, presenter and educator. He is also a trained medical doctor and qualified teacher.
Dr Farrimond has written a number of international best selling books including ‘The Science of Cooking, Science of Spice, and most recently ‘The Science of Life’, in which he answers 219 key questions on how to live your best life. He has made numerous TV and radio appearances as well as having produced several articles in various publications.
In this episode of the podcast we discuss his experiences as a brain cancer survivor with a medical background and what influence this has had on his life.
-
8-year-old Deliah Sitorius had been fighting a rare brain cancer for almost a year with chemotherapy . Unfortunately this was unsuccessful and she stopped treatment immediately. Deliah was given hope after her mother discovered the tumour has a rare mutation often seen in lung cancer. Since applying a more targeted, personalised approach using a drug called Lorlatinib the tumour has been shrinking.
Loratinib is a third generation ALK ROS1 tyosine kinase inhibitor, specifically designed to overcome known ALK resistance mutations. It is able to penetrate the blood brain barrier and more recently we have seen paediatric brain cancer patients who are responding very well to the drug. -
In this episode, recorded just before the New Year, I discuss recent news in brain cancer research.
This includes:
How the drug loperamide (brand name Imodium), induces cell death in glioblastoma cell lines and if this could have promise for real, human applications.
Metabolic reprogramming via inhibition of a key cancer metabolite- D-2-Hydroxyglutarate (D-2-HG).
Developments of liquid biopsies for glioma. -
This episode features long term GBM survivor and OurBrainBank board member Meredith Moore. We discuss the benefits of empowering patients to make informed choices about their treatment and how this has helped her to survive for 15 years and counting following a diagnosis of GBM in 2005.
A large part of our conversation highlights patient advocacy and Meredith's involvement with OurBrainBank. OurBrainBank is an innovative, patient-led movement designed to move glioblastoma from terminal to treatable, powered by patients. -

Nathan Delack is a 7-time EMMY-award-winning television news photojournalist.
In this episode I interview Nathan on his upcoming documentary film about the McCullom Lake cancer cluster, chronicling the town’s search for answers and their fight for justice.
LINKS:
http://www.McCullomlake.net

http://www.Twtitter.com/McCullomLake
Background:
In 2014, residents of McCullom Lake, Illinois, settled an eight-year-old lawsuit in which they claimed exposure to vinyl chloride and other volatile organic compounds from a nearby Dow Chemical plant had caused a brain cancer cluster in the area.
The original lawsuits also named the neighbouring Modine Manufacturing plant, alleging that its contribution of trichloroethylene to the plume made it culpable for illnesses. Modine settled with the plaintiffs in 2008 for undisclosed amounts.
The village of McCullom lake has a population of just over 1,000 residents. A brain cancer cluster of 33 brain tumours was reported at the time, with many more people thought to be affected following further investigation. -
