Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/2/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a new pasuk - one which is more abstract and more fraught with translation-nuance questions than any in recent memory. After attempting to ask and formulate all the questions (which was a bit more involved than usual), we came up with some nice ideas! I'm really looking forward to seeing what the meforshim say tomorrow (ืื"ื).

Synopsis: This evening (3/31/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, the pasuk we learned yielded a TON of questions. Thankfully, we were able to come up with a number of different approaches, and learned a couple more from the meforshim. Despite the rather extreme subject of the pasuk, the ideas we learned ended up being relevant and practical.

Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/27/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's ideas, adding some examples and methodology points along the way. Then we took up the GINORMOUS Meiri, spanning our pasuk and the previous one, which included several explanations. The interpretations he gave were great, but at the end of the day, ALL the approaches to our pasuk - his and ours - boiled down to the same fundamental insight. Personally, I found that to be rather refreshing!

Synopsis: This morning (3/26/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a pasuk about a phenomenon we've all experienced and witnessed: people loving the sound of their own voice. We defined the basic idea, then proceeded to discover application after application, on our own and in the meforshim we consulted. Will we succeed in finding a greater chidush? That remains to be seen tomorrow! (ืื"ื)

Length: 1 hour 38 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/24/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a VERY difficult pasuk featuring two highly specific Mishleic archetypes which don't get nearly enough coverage: the ish tahpuchos and the nirgan. The questions on the pasuk were deceptively straightforward, but when we attempted to learn it, we got several 80% explanations which we just couldn't develop into full ideas. We finally managed to bring one idea across the finish line, but it was a real work out!

Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/19/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we devoted a third day to the pasuk we began last week! This was partially due to the fact that we didn't even get to the meforshim last time, and we also had a smaller crowd today. While I can't say that we arrived at any groundbreaking new peshatim, we did succeed in developing strategies for practical applications. We also learned an important derecho nistar approach from the Meiri. In other words, it was time well-spent!

Length: 1 hour 32 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/17/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we revisited one of Mishleiโs lesser-known archetypes: the bliyaal. We had been working with a specific translation for the past few years but discovered a couple more tonight. To our surprise, these turned out to be more unified than they initially seemed. We developed a few ideas of our own and explored a couple more from the meforshim. More work remains to fully comprehend this elusive Mishleic character, but analyses like this advance our understanding.

Length: 1 hour 20 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/10/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up one of the most difficult-to-translate pesukim in recent memory! Even after going through several translations and minimalist meforshim, we felt no closer to forming our own view on how to READ the pasuk, let alone explain it. But this provided us with a unique opportunity to practice learning a pasuk we couldn't confidently read. Miraculously, nearly everyone in the shiur arrived at a similar idea - each with a different nuance - and this enabled us to make sense of what the pasuk was saying. We then learned three additional ideas from the meforshim. All in all, it was a rich yield, considering the difficulty we faced at first!

Synopsis: This morning (3/6/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's approaches, but instead of returning to Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah, we developed an approach I came up with based on Ralbag and Hoil Moshe. After that, we developed another original approach, then learned the Malbim's explanation and concluded with the Meiri. This ended up being a REALLY insightful pasuk with many real-world applications!

Synopsis: This evening (3/3/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that seems really obvious AND which I've taught many times in my high school Mishlei classes. For these reasons, I was worried we wouldn't come up with any chidushim (new insights) tonight. My worries were compounded when I realized that this exact same pasuk showed up two chapters earlier, and I gave shiur on it on 12/24/23! Thankfully, we came up with some really nice ideas AND reviewed the old ones!

Synopsis: This morning (2/26/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began a NEW section in Mishlei (at least, according to R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak). Synopsis: This morning (2/20/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began with a quick review and refinement of what we covered yesterday. After a few additional ideas from the group, we delved into the meforshim and we were rewarded not only with excellent ideas about our pasuk, but huge methodological insights for how to approach Mishlei as a sefer, thanks to R' Sheshes. I went into this pasuk hoping for chidushim in Mishleic laziness, and we got plenty of that and more!

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/13/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we had a different kind of "Mishlei Part 2" shiur than we usually do. I was bothered yesterday by the lack of specificity in our approaches. My Mishleic intuition told me that we were hovering around the general topic, but hadn't yet discovered the chidush (novel insight). We engaged in a VERY in-depth review of what we covered and ended up hitting a goldmine of insight into the nature of interpersonal conflict. While I'm still not sure whether we ended up with a complete explanation of the pasuk itself, that's almost unimportant to me. I feel like we really leveled up in our understanding of this (unfortunately) important topic, and I'm already eager for the next pasuk about strife, whenever that may be!

Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/12/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing a new pasuk on what appears to be a new topic. We quickly encountered the challenge that crops up in Mishlei quite often: a seemingly obvious statement about an exceedingly broad topic. While it was relatively easy to come up with insights about the relevant phenomena, we had difficulty pinning down the scope of the topic in our pasuk, or even the decision-making scenario. We'll attempt again tomorrow with the help of the meforshim (ืื"ื).

Synopsis: This evening (2/10/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk featuring a curious metaphor. I was actually surprised by how quickly the idea flowed tonight. We came up with a couple of approaches on our own and learned a few from the meforshim. Many of the practical applications we discussed pertained to pedagogy. Next time, it appears we'll be moving on to an entirely new topic. Hope to see you then!
