Mishlei 15:9 - Hashem's Love and Loathing in Mishlei (Part 2)

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/28/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we set out to clarify and develop the different approaches we came up with yesterday. I THOUGHT we were going to learn the meforshim, but the only one we ended up learning was R' Yitzchak ben Sheshes Gerondi. After much discussion, we ended up with six approaches, some of which overlapped. We might not have gotten to learn our go-to meforshim, but we still had some good learning!

The Torah content for the remainder of November has been sponsored by Ed Zack. When I asked him for a sponsorship message, he replied, "MAGA." While I appreciate the support, I told him I'd prefer to keep things less politically divisive. After some discussion, we settled on something we can all agree with: Make America Think Again.

Mishlei 15:9 - Hashem's Love and Loathing in Mishlei (Part 1)

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/27/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a pasuk which appears to be connected to the previous one, which also speaks of an "abomination of Hashem," but we decided to approach this on its own. We quickly uncovered several overlapping possibilities and two distinct ways of framing the opposites within the pasuk and the chidushim. We're going to mull these approaches over and try to clarify them tomorrow before we dive into the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:16 - Forget Gold and Silver; Invest in Chochmah and Binah

    Length: 1 hour 16 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/25/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that - unlike the last six pesukim - was NOT about kings! At least, not according to us. We attempted to learn this pasuk on our own. We didn't realize that so many of our go-to meforshim didn't provide much help. Thankfully, Rashi, R' Avraham ben ha'Rambam (in Parashas Mikeitz), and Malbim, we ended up developing a nice idea! We even got a lesson in economics and finance from the (fake) Radak!

Mishlei 16:15 - The Nature of the King's Favor

    Length: 1 hour 10 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/18/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the last pasuk in the local cluster of pesukim about kings. Once again, I was worried that we would have difficulty seeing past the cliche surface level - and once again, we did! We ended up with several really nice approaches from the group and the meforshim, most of which had wider applicability than some of the other pesukim about kings. Next week we begin a new topic!

Mishlei 15:8 - Tefilah and Korbanos in Mishlei?! (Part 2)

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/14/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we turned to the meforshim. We encountered some nice ideas, but also found that their approaches overlapped to the extent that it was difficult to tell where one distinct idea ended and another one began. By the end, we pulled together a couple of takeaways. All in all, this was a nice pasuk - though I only realize now that we never addressed the question of what this is doing in Mishlei.

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/13/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began working on a pasuk which looks like it belongs in Tehilim or the Neviim more than in Mishlei. We worked on one approach, then set it aside to review Rabbeinu Yonah's definition of "yashar." Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll attempt our own analysis again before turning to the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:14 - Calming an Angry King

    Length: 1 hour 28 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/11/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned another pasuk about kings. This one also seemed simple, but we ended up stumbling upon some surprising approaches - especially when we saw meforshim who applied this pasuk to the King of kings! And, not surprisingly - given the recent election - we were able to apply it to our upcoming 47th president as well.

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/7/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed and refined yesterday's approaches, which translated יזרו as "spread" or "scatter." Today we focused on two other translations: "winnow" and "crown." Not only did we come up with some nice ideas, but we unwittingly stumbled upon a Grand Theory of how Mishlei uses terms for speech (e.g. lips, mouth, tongue, etc.). I'm happy with the ideas we learned from this pasuk, but even happier about that Grand Theory!

    Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/6/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a "classic" sounding Mishlei pasuk about chachamim, ksilim, speech, and knowledge. Tomorrow, we'll see if we come up with our own approaches based on the other translation, and then we'll delve into the meforshim.

I was a little worried because so many of our go-to meforshim had such little to say, but we ended up developing some nice approaches on our own and we learned a few from the meforshim. Despite being about kings, all the ideas we came up with were widely applicable to our daily lives.

Synopsis: This morning (10/31/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing, clarifying, and developing some of the approaches we took yesterday. We then learned three new approaches from the meforshim: R' Sheshes ben Yitzchak Gerondi (our newly published friend!), Rabbeinu Yonah, and the Meiri's derech nistar. Great yield, as usual!

    Length: 1 hour 29 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (10/7/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a difficult pasuk that just didn't seem to fit the Mishlei mold. We tackled it anyway, hoping we'd be rewarded with a timely idea for Aseres Ymei Teshuvah, and we ended up working out THREE such ideas, plus a couple from the meforshim. Mishlei 16:10 - The Charm on the King's Lips

    Length: 1 hour 37 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/30/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up a VERY strange pasuk. It was difficult to translate, difficult to contextualize, but we managed to come up with some really nice approaches and learn a few of them from the meforshim as well! Sadly, we didn't end up getting an idea about Rosh ha'Shanah, which was a possibility in my mind, but the ideas were nice and surprisingly far-ranging in their application.

    Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/26/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining what we came up with yesterday. We then learned a completely different approach from Rabbeinu Yonah, another approach from Ibn Ezra, and a radically different approach from the Malbim. Mishlei 16:9 - Man Plans and Hashem ... Prepares Footsteps?

    Length: 1 hour 39 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/23/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we ended up having a masterclass on how to avoid learning cliché ideas from pesukim that seem like clichés. I was concerned this might happen, especially since this is the third pasuk in this chapter we've encountered along these lines, but we managed to develop several nuanced ideas and subtle Mishleic techniques. The meforshim helped us even more! If you listen to this one, I REALLY encourage you to pause the recording before we start giving answers and see what you come up with on your own.
