In this episode, Lianne Keemink and Andrew Chin discuss the book "The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron".
Among other things..
----more----Shownotes30 Day ChallengeAndrew's challenge was: Take one deep breath a day. He did and found that it helped with relaxation and composure. Drew's also watching/listening to the Abraham Hicks meditations. Lianne's challenge was: Act on one whim a day. I was a bit 'challenged' by the totally normal times, but it worked well. It is very satisfying! Next 30-day challenge for both of us: the Morning Pages from The Artist's Way! Book of the MonthThis month Drew and I discussed The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron!
It is a book published 25 years ago by Julia Cameron, who has an impressive body of work of mostly non-fiction, but also some fiction and screenplays.
It's currently 12$ on Amazon and 18€ on bol.com, but we've mainly included these links so you can read about the book: If you're able to, buy your book at the bookstore near you so we will still have bookstores in the future!
The main things Drew and I got out of The Artist's Way?
The Morning Pages: Every morning you write 3 pages in a journal, stream-of-consciousness. Chris Winfield explains it fairly well right here. Andrew and I are doing this for our 30-day challenge for the next podcast, so we can talk a little more in-depth about the actual experience. The Artist's Date: A recommended 2-hour period dedicated to a creative project. You can find more information about that here!Julia Cameron is a very talented writer, so we also talk about her beautiful style (which makes sense because practicing every morning with the morning pages definitely helps) and the inspiration you can find in this book for creativity in your life, in whatever shape or form most suits you!
Pop Culture PleasuresRain on me by Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande: Drew and I are SUCKERS for a good pop song! SHOWNOTES
30-Day Challenges
Andrew's 30 Day Challenge was getting out of bed at 08:30 and we're happy to report he succeeded! Listen to him divulge his success rate and how it worked.
Lianne's 30 Day Challenge was doing something nice for someone else for 30 days, and she was very happy about doing this. Highly recommended!
Book of the Month
We talk about Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein, Gabby's latest book. This is a book about spirituality to the Nth degree so it's gotta be your thing, but there are some very smart and interesting takes in the book.
We're skeptical about manifesting as explained by most of the Law of Attraction but there is merit in some of the philosophy, and Gabby explains some of those parts well!
Pop Culture Pleasures
* (Andrew): Blinding Lights by the Weekend
* (Lianne) Spotify Top 100 Playlists, and Rick & Morty
Obsessions
* (Andrew): Essential Oil Diffuser & Lulu Lemon for Men * (Lianne): Her letterbox in her office that she writes different quotes on each week

Lianne Keemink (The Self Help Hipster) and Andrew Chin discuss self-help books, talk about their obsessions and their pop culture pleasures.
BOOK OF THE MONTHAndrew and I discuss Atomic Habits, the book by James Clear
----more----You can buy the paperback here* for 16.99 and you can buy the Kindle version off of Amazon for 12.00$!* James Clear is an American journalist, photographer and self-help blogger. For me he falls into the same category as Leo Babauta, James Altucher and Mark Manson: all big self help bloggers who came up around the same time, talking about self-development. James Clear has really narrowed down his topic to Habit Change, and the book 'Atomic Habits' is an amalgamation of everything he's ever read and everything he's ever written on the topic.Andrew and I really like the book, it touches upon some of the most important topics in habit changing, such as:
It is about small changes! Getting little bits better, one-percenting (getting 1% better each day) as we coined the term in this podcast. Identity and the way you look at yourself matters, but it's a way to get yourself into the door - not a way to completely change your life in and of itself. We get into an interesting discussion about it! If you have systems in place, it is so much easier to do things, aka create new habits. Systems can be a step 1, step 2, step 3, but als other like getting an accountability partner, making the first 5 minutes of something super easy or habit-stacking. It's about progress, not perfection Andrew said: "Find the thing you want to identify with, and then prove it to yourself." Longevity and long term commitment are important. For anything, for success, for actual change, and therefore also for habits. "Just enough victories to keep you motivated, enough mistakes to keep working hard." OBSESSIONSLianne: My dishwasher and making air horn sounds. Oh and Poolside.fm! It is SO FUN to me for some reason. I listen to it for bits and pieces here and there because it just makes me chuckle. Andrew: His Alexander McQueen double white sneakersPOP CULTURE PLEASURES(Mostly Lianne, because at this point I'm 50% pop culture)
Blade Runner 2049: I watched it with Vin on Netflix and it is STUNNING. Put away your phone one evening, get some snacks and go watch it. It is awe-inspiring. GLOW: Such. A. Good. Show. Also on Netflix. Andrew asked me what I thought about 902010 (no opinion but my friend Susannah hated it) and Hobbs and Shaw: I gushed for 5 minutes. GO SEE IT! Next book:Art Matters by Neil Gaiman!
Other News:As mentioned in the Podcast, we're bringing the 30 Day Challenge BACK!

Lianne Keemink (The Self Help Hipster) and Andrew Chin discuss self-help books, talk about their obsessions and their pop culture pleasures.
Book of the MonthAndrew and I received the book by Philip Zimbardo & John Boyd, the Time Paradox! I had a copy of a friend, but the Kindle version is 16$ on Amazon.
----more----
Philip Zimbardo is a huge name in (pop) psychology, he's best known for the Stanford Prison Experiment, and the book reads like a big parade of the biggest things that happened in psychology, somehow related to...time.
It's an interesting read on human perspective on time, and it's not a very practical self-help book but inspiring you to take a look at your own attitudes towards time.
You can take the surveys to check out your own attitudes on time here!
"Your attitudes on time have a profound impact on your life and your world." "Whether you look for happiness in the past, present or the future, you experience happiness in the present." I mention the article I wrote about taking the long term approach where I also mention the Marshmallow experiment that's also mentioned in the book. Pop Culture PleasuresLianne: Wine Country on Netflix (read my Dutch review on that movie here!) Lianne: Godzilla, King of the Monsters.OBSESSED. Saw it twice. Lianne: Good Omens, it's on Amazon Prime and stars David Tennant & Michael Sheen in the TV recreation of Pratchett's & Gaiman's awesome book, Good Omens. Lianne (I had a lot to share this week): The Loch. It's terrible (especially in terms of how Steve Alten writes about women) but I like it for what it is -- suspense ridden monster stuff. I love it even more when I found out the movie The Meg is based on one of his books either. Lianne & Andrew: GAME OF THRONES.
ObsessionsMy new pair of pants. (Lianne) Essays on Game of Thrones and how it ended. (Andrew)
Next bookAtomic Habits by James Clear!

Find it here*! You can read more about The Hard Thing Rule here."I've never really viewed myself as particularly talented. Where I excel is ridiculous, sickening work ethic. [...] The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is: I'm not afraid to die on a treadmill. I will not be outworked, period. You might have more talent than me ,you might be smarter than be, you might be sexier than me. You might be all of those things. You got it on me in nine categories. But if we get on the treadmill together, there's two things: You're getting off first, or I'm going to die. It's really that simple."

We read TWO books! We read The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A Fuck and Get Your Shit Together by Sarah Knight.
----more----
SHOWNOTES
30 DAY CHALLENGE
LIANNE: I have been doing reiki before going to bed, which is somewhere in between an "energy healing" and a very relaxing meditation (I'm still on the fence what it actually is, I just enjoy the moment to chill and connect with myself). It's been nice. BUT. New challenge is me editing the chapters of my book, to hand in a manuscript. Exciting times.
ANDREW: Too busy, but the tracking mornings is up for the next episode. There is a fresh unboxed 5-minute journal ready to be used.
BOOK OF THE MONTH
We read TWO books! We read The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A Fuck and Get Your Shit Together by Sarah Knight.
The ebook for Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A Fuck is only 5 euros here!* And Get Your Shit Together is also just 5 euros here!* BUY THEM. Best 10 euros you'll spend this year, because in my humble opinion these are the best self help books of 2017.
Andrew (more of less) agrees, except he got more out of the previous book (the Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck by Mark Manson) because he already applied a lot of the stuff from Sarah's first book about not giving a fuck to his life. Get Your Shit Together however? Made him realise he wants to get more of his shit together.
Our favourite aspects of The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A Fuck is how Sarah explains you have a "Fuck Budget" and there is only so much fucks you can give about certain things. And it is okay to not give a fuck about things like meetings (Andrew) or birthday parties where you don't know anybody (Lianne).
Our favourite quotes from Get Your Shit Together:
"Just because you are doing a ton of shit all day, every day, does NOT mean you have your shit together. It means you are a high functioning human to-do list potentially on the verge of total mental and physical collapse.""I know so many people who complain about there finances. Who lament not being able to pay for or save for thes or that. They think of money as a lion that can't be tamed. Or worse, as a cute, fuzzy little Norway in the streets and a gremlin in the sheets. In reality, money is just a piece of paper and you are a real live human being with free will and probably two pairs of sneakers. If you're someone who says "I can't make it to payday without dipping into my savings" or "I'm always spending a little more than I should" then you're allowing money to build a prison around you and make you its bitch. What I'm saying is, don't be money's bitch."As mentioned before, buy the set.
OBSESSIONS
ANDREW: His van, obviously, and the idea of living in a TinyHouse on an acre of land in Sicily. I plan to visit and eat pasta.
LIANNE: DIWMOTZ. The website, the book (buy it because it's cute, cheap and perfect to put in the bathroom so that when you hear people laughing, you know that they're pooping on your toilet), the people I met at the book launch. Deal with it.
POP CULTURE PLEASURES
LIANNE: Stranger Things S2 is AMAZING. (I spent quite a bit of the podcast explaining the concept of Stranger Things to Andrew because he's never seen any of it.) I am also really into 80's music at the moment.
ANDREW: Bladerunner! Both the old and the new version. Apparently it's a go-see, because it's beautiful cinematography AND a great film.
ALL TIME FAVORITE POP CULTURE PLEASURES
Because it was the season finale we also talked about our ALL TIME FAVORITE honourable mentions.
Bojack Horseman. A show that takes some getting used to but is so funny and smart and deep you are hooked for life. Rick.& Morty, because of this clip. Reese's Pieces, because at one point I talked about it so much. And my Dad Wrote A Porno because it hit us hard and fast at the end of the series.

Tracking his morning, as he wants to get up a little earlier and write more. By consciously experiencing your mornings you’re more likely to be able to do both!LIANNE: Did self-help exercises aplenty during the summer! Gratitude lists never fail, but also investigated limiting beliefs and self-destructive tendencies. It was very interesting and I will keep going down that road. Andrew and I are gonna make a little book with some favorite small self-help exercises, probably.BOOK OF THE MONTHThrive by Arianne Huffington! You can get it for 7$ on Amazon* (the Kindle version is 10$) and Bol.com carries it for 11.99!Ariane Huffington is a Greek-American author of multiple books, engaged in politics as well as business, and she is one of the most influential women in media. She is co-founder and editor in-chief of the Huffington Post and is very well known as the advocate of sleep, as in this Ted-talk.Thrive is her book in which she wants you to learn how to thrive, not by working harder, longer, more efficiently, but by actively pursuing relaxation and self-care.In ‘Thrive’ Arianne explains in a very matter-of-factly way in what ways you can improve your well-being, backed up by science and research at every turn. From meditation to putting away your phone and yoga, but also through giving and service. This book is very suitable for anyone who isn’t into the more American gospel-type “YOU CAN DO IT” books, or who breaks out in hives as soon as someone talks about the Universe and energy. Some of Andrew and Lianne’s favorite quotes:· “We may not be able to witness our own eulogy, but we’re actually writing it all the time, everyday. The question is how much we’re giving the eulogizer to work with. (…) The good news is that each and everyone of us still has the time to live up to the best version of our eulogy.”
· “Eulogies aren’t resumes.”
· “It’s really not so much habit breaking as habit unmaking.”
· “If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and purer. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.”
· “Knock on your inner door. No other.”
· Giving up drugs is easy compared to dealing with the emotions drugs protected you from.”

SHOWNOTES
LISTENING IN:
A previous question we got was “what are the best/worst self-help books we ever read?”
TLDL (too long didn’t listen); Our favorites are (and will forever be) Self Development For Smart People by Steve Pavlina and Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy.
One of the worst books is probably the Secret, although a) at one point in my life I did love it and b) marketing-wise that one was nuclear.
Another point we make is that sometimes it’s not the book, it’s you. I have picked up books and threw them in a corner after a few chapters, while if I come back to it a couple of months later I actually really like it.
BOOK OF THE MONTH:
Reinvent Yourself by James Altucher. BUY IT, THE KINDLE VERSION IS LITERALLY 2.20$ ON AMAZON.
James Altucher also has a podcast (Andrew considers it the Podcast of all podcasts!) and I love his writing style.
POP CULTURE PLEASURES
I refer to this quote in the chapter on Scheduling Inspiration of ‘How to be a Bawse’ and relentlessly doing, reading, watching and browsing what gives you joy.Hot New Pop Tracks is Andrew & I’s favorite playlist at the moment.OBSESSIONS
Andrew’s: In the previous episode he talked about his obsession with Urban Van Dwelling, and now he bought a van! It’s gonna be the WorkLifeStudio Van and he’s gonna tour with it!Mine: A weird phenomenon called “WHERE IS THE FUCKING AIRPORT” on MapCrunch. Tumblr post here. I’ve tried playing it and it’s absolutely impossible.NEXT BOOK
Radical Candor by Kim Scott. I had just received the press release for the Dutch version and Drew and I will read the original version. The Dutch version is coming, but the English one is available as an ebook for 16.00* on Bol.com but yay Amazon, yay Kindle, I got it here* for 13.79$. *Affiliate links, meaning we get 1-3% when you buy something!
