Grief specialist Ashley Olivia Nelson joins us on Widow 180: The Podcast. Ashley shared her deeply personal journey as a two-time widow before 35, and her transition into helping others navigate grief.
There were so many powerful insights, but here are the top 3 takeaways:
đč Your identity is ever-evolving.
Ashley reminds us that after a significant loss, our sense of self changesânot just once, but many times. Grief challenges us to get intimate with who we are now, and that evolution is both necessary and empowering.đč Feeling "stuck" often means you donât feel safe, not that youâre failing.
Ashley reframes the sensation of being stuck in grief as a protective response. Itâs not a lack of progressâit's your body and mind searching for safety after the world shifts beneath your feet. Finding small ways to regain a sense of security is key.đč Grieving your old life and desires is valid.
You donât have to âstop wanting what you had.â Ashley encourages us to honor those attachments, validate our yearning, and recognize that healing doesnât mean erasing your grief, but rather learning to carry it with more ease.Whether youâre navigating grief yourself or supporting someone who is, Ashleyâs wisdom is a must-hear.

What if you wanted to make up your own rules for grieving and do what feels right for you? That's EXACTLY what Diane Easley decided to do.
This is an incredibly honest and inspiring conversation with Diane Easley, who graciously shared her journey through widowhood after suddenly losing her husband, Walter, in 2017. I know you will enjoy it and all of the wisdom she shares!
What âDoing Grief Your Own Wayâ Really Looks Like
Dianeâs story starts with the unexpected loss of her husband while he was away on a work trip in Floridaâa devastating call that changed everything in an instant. What followed wasnât a prescribed script of grief, but a deeply mindful, authentic approach rooted in self-awareness and honoring what she needed, not what tradition or others expected.
Dianeâs Approach to Grieving:
Intentionality Over Expectations: Diane realized early on that there isnât a âright wayâ to mourn. Wearing black, lighting a candle at the one-year mark, and âmoving onâ wasn't the real answer! Documenting the Realness: She began sharing daily reflections on Instagramâsometimes about a broken watering can that brought her to her knees in grief, other days about the surprising moments of joy she allowed herself to feel.
Setting Boundaries: Diane put a sign on her front door, politely asking visitors not to knock or ring the doorbell, but to quietly come in if the door was open. âIt makes people be thoughtful when they show up,â she addedâit was what she needed to feel safe and respected during her most vulnerable days.Be sure to check out the latest workbook in the Widow 180 Workbook series, The Boost Your Confidence Level After Loss Workbook available for immediate download now!

What exactly is a "grief hangover"? It is real. And no amount of Advil can help this particular type of hangover.
With this Easter holiday just passing, I wanted to address the "grief hangover" phenomenon that happens when we crash after those big milestone days or holidays. We spend so much energy to get through the actual day. We feel even more exhausted on the days following.
This episode serves as a reminder to do what you need to recover. Give yourself permission to rest and recover and more importantly, go easy on yourself during this time! This is hard!

What if I start to forget them? What if I forget their laugh, their smell, the quirky things they used to say and do?
This is one of the biggest fears we have as widows. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be the sole record-keeper of our loved one and the life we shared together. It's impossible to remember every detail, and for that, we tend to be hard on ourselves and even feel guilt.
The fear of forgetting is a natural and normal part of grief AND there are steps you can take to help preserve the memories.
It starts with asking some MEMORY QUESTIONS. These are questions you can ask friends and family to help you with. I encourage you to sit and take some time on this bittersweet exercise to recall the memories you don't want to forget.

"Make new friends, but keep the old" is a saying that means it's important to continue nurturing, or even rekindling, existing friendships while also seeking out new connections in life.
This is especially important advice for widows, as we find ourselves alone again after years of being with our partner. Our friendships and relationships can change. So the value of older friendships becomes more important than ever before.
In this episode, we hear stories of lasting friendship from different widows and how their lives have changed and grown since the loss of their spouse.
Rekindling old friendships - this is one of the strategies covered in the Overcoming Loneliness Workbook. To find more help and support on the subject of loneliness, check out the workbook at www.widow180.com/loneliness.

Welcome back to the first episode of 2025!
On todayâs episode we are talking about how to thrive in 2025!One thing to do is to leave behind the thoughts and things that donât serve you, that donât help you, the thoughts that hold you back.
In order to move forward with confidence in 2025, we can leave behind self-doubt. We can leave behind the negative thoughts that tell us that weâre not capable. The ones that tell us how we wonât make it through this.
We need to let go of the belief in those thoughts.
Let the hurtful talk go.
And remember this quote by Roy T Bennett that says:
âBelieve in your infinite potential. Your only limitations are those you set upon yourself.
Believe in yourself, your abilities and your own potential. Never let self-doubt hold you captive. You are worthy of all that you dream of and hope for.â
