If there is anything there is anything that most hunters would agree upon about wild turkeys, it is that they can be stubborn and unpredictable creatures! Any hunter who’s got a few seasons under their vest knows this to be true. Just when you think you’ve got him coming in on a string, he’ll hold his ground—or he’ll go the other way—or he’ll completely vanish into thin air…or so it seems!
In this episode, we’re going to take a look at several scenarios you may encounter this spring and more importantly, we’ll talk about what you can do to give yourself the advantage. Let's breakdown of eight scenarios you might find yourself in while you’re out there trying to outsmart the King of Spring. We’ll also discuss eight things you can do to stack the odds in your favor.

When was your first turkey hunting experience? I’ll likely never forget my first outing. It was 1993, I had just come home from 6th Grade Camp with my school and my dad let me skip the last two days of the school week to go with him and a buddy to West Virginia to turkey hunt for three days. First, I was thrilled that my mom even let me get away with missing school, but second, I had tagged along with my dad on a few bow hunts and my curiosity of hunting, woodsmanship, and animal behavior was really building.
Now that I am a father too, it's been a real joy for me to get to share similar experiences with each of my own children. I’m proud to say that each of my four kids—my two boys and my two girls have all shared the turkey woods with me and they all have successfully filled multiple tags over the years. While I certainly don’t claim to be an expert on hunting with kids, I’d like to think that I have gained a lot of wisdom and learned a lot of do’s-and-don’ts.So let me share with you some advice for passing on the tradition of spring turkey hunting. In this podcast episode, I'll share with you five ways to capitalize on taking a child turkey hunting!

As I look back over the last 30 years of turkey hunting, I realized that more than 60% of the gobblers I saw get knocked down were on hunts shared with someone else. Double teaming gobblers is a deadly effective strategy in the spring woods, and I want to share with you why I think two hunters on a gobbler are better than one. Plus, I’ll give you two new tactics you may have never tried before with your hunting partner.
We’re talking about double teaming spring toms. In this episode, let’s take a look at all the advantages that double-teaming can bring to your hunt. Two hunters mean more eyes glassing a distant field for strutters or more eyes scanning the woods for the movement of an approaching gobbler. Likewise, two hunters mean twice as many ears listening for gobblers on the roost or picking out responses to your locator call. Having a hunting partner can keep you in the field longer.
When you’re wanting to quit, having someone else there with you can help you sit it out just a little while longer or to climb just one more ridgetop to call from. And as an added bonus, double teaming for turkeys gives you a chance to get back into the woods when you’ve already tagged out. You get to experience yet another day filled with a beautiful sunrise, another morning of hearing hearty gobbles floating through the air, and another front row seat to the greatest game of the spring.

So, tell me if this sounds familiar. Birds are gobbling from the roost in three different directions. The morning sunrise seems to have every tom on fire. All that gobbling holds the promise that it’s going to be a great day. But something doesn’t work out just right with your roost setup. The tom flies down. He answers your best fly down cackle and then a hen butts in. You haven’t heard a gobble in over an hour so you call it a day and head for the truck, figuring that you’ll just have to get set up on the roosted gobbler again tomorrow and hope that he doesn’t have that hen with him so you can kill him. By 9:00 your hunting woods are in the review mirror and you frustratingly wait for your chance to greet the woods at first light again in the morning.
It's true that a lot of hunters find themselves discouraged and giving up right before things can turn productive. A lot times it’s because they either don’t know the typical location preferences of turkeys all throughout the day or they don’t understand where to go to put themselves in the right calling spot after that exciting action that comes right at fly down.
In today’s episode, I’ll cover six sweet spot locations that will help you connect with that longbeard at any time of the day.
It’s something a lot of hunters know but very few practice—sticking it out and hunting all day for turkeys. Now I realize that some states have restricted hunting hours, and you can’t hunt all day. Regardless, the encouragement is so long as it is legal hunting time, hunt! The turkeys are out there, and you should be too. Yes, it does take a lot of initiative. It can take a lot of patience. But when you’re toting out that heavy gobbler with those sharp, pointed spurs it can make the extra effort all worth it.
So, let’s take a walk through the woods from sun-up to sun-down and talk about where you should be, where you can hope to find turkeys, and what you should do when you’re there.

Only 30% of hunters in my home state of Ohio were successful in the 2024 spring turkey season. That means that of the 51.5K hunters who purchased a tag, a whopping 36k hunters came up empty at the end of the season. There are 7 common mistakes that make the difference between tag soup or turkey nuggets for dinner. Let’s see if you are guilty of any of these mistakes.
On today’s podcast, we'll dive into 7 common mistakes turkey hunters make and how to avoid them so you can have a better hunting season. And I can really say I've made a few of these mistakes myself over the years. Let's figure out how to dodge these pitfalls next time you're out in the turkey woods.

When I think about all the blunders I’ve made in the turkey woods. I can’t help but think of all the mistakes I’ve made going through life too. One thing I am grateful for is that we have a God who loves us despite our mistakes. And that is a good thing, because I know that I am prone to make a lot of them.
I’m encouraged by a verse in 1 John 1:9. It says: “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” This verse gives me comfort to believe that all sins are forgiven in Christ. My mistakes aren’t held against me if I give them over to Jesus.
No matter how you're doing, whether you're at your best or worst, God's grace is there to cover up all your mistakes. It doesn't make sense, and you won't understand it. What a beautiful truth for those of us who struggle to do it right all the time! I hope you know the love of God and it encourages you too.

You want to become a better turkey hunter, don’t you? I know I do. I think we all do. I haven’t met anybody who has this entire turkey hunting thing figured out and goes out into the woods and returns successful every. single. time. But I do know several turkey hunters who have boosted their success rate simply because they never stop learning. It’s true that the more knowledge and experience you acquire the more you can apply. When you’ve got a deeper toolbox to pull ideas and tactics from, the more successful you’ll be in the pursuit.
Welcome to the very first episode of the Wild About Turkey Hunting Podcast. My name is Josh Davis and I've spent more than 30 years chasing wild turkeys and I love it. I, in no way, consider myself an expert. But I do consider myself a never-ending learner.
My father and I have been diving headfirst into the world of spring turkey hunting since the early 90s. We've figured out what makes time in the field special, and we now enjoy sharing these experiences, passions, and skills with our growing generations of family and close friends. We're always ready to help share what we've learned from our pursuit, and we want to never stop learning. I believe my success has increased over the years because I was willing to learn more through reading, watching, and having in-the-woods experiences with turkeys. As a believer in Jesus, I’ve found that my faith journey is very similar. The more I learn the greater the pursuit gets.
The pursuit is wild. Never stop learning.
