  • Carrie Underwood was born on March 10, 1983, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and grew up on her family’s farm in the small town of Checotah. From a young age, Carrie’s passion for music was evident. She performed at local events, churches, and talent shows, showcasing a voice that would later captivate millions. Despite her natural talent, Carrie’s early ambitions were modest, and she didn’t envision herself becoming a global music icon. After graduating as salutatorian from Checotah High School in 2001, she attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with an emphasis in journalism in 2006. She had aspirations of a career in broadcasting, but fate had other plans. In 2005, Carrie’s life changed forever when she auditioned for the fourth season of "American Idol." Her powerful performances and humble demeanor captured the hearts of viewers, and she emerged as the season’s winner. Her victory catapulted her into the spotlight, securing her a recording contract and introducing her to the competitive world of country music. Her debut album, "Some Hearts," released later that year, became an instant success. Featuring hits like "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Before He Cheats," the album was a commercial and critical triumph, earning multi-platinum status and numerous awards. Carrie’s unique ability to blend country traditions with pop sensibilities quickly set her apart in the industry. Carrie’s subsequent albums solidified her status as one of country music’s leading artists. "Carnival Ride" in 2007 and "Play On" in 2009 continued her streak of chart-topping hits and showcased her growth as a vocalist and songwriter. By the time "Blown Away" was released in 2012, Carrie’s music had evolved to include more mature themes and sophisticated production, earning her even greater acclaim. She continued to push boundaries with albums like "Storyteller" in 2015, "Cry Pretty" in 2018, and her Christmas album "My Gift" in 2020. In 2021, she released "My Savior," a gospel album that paid homage to her faith and earned her another Grammy Award. Her most recent album, "Denim & Rhinestones," released in 2022, embraced a playful and vibrant tone, blending her country roots with pop influences. Throughout her career, Carrie has been recognized with numerous accolades. She has won eight Grammy Awards, 16 Academy of Country Music Awards, 25 CMT Music Awards, and 17 American Music Awards. In 2008, she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, an honor reserved for country music’s most esteemed performers. Ten years later, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing her legacy as a cross-genre icon. Beyond her music, Carrie has ventured into various entrepreneurial and creative endeavors. In 2015, she launched CALIA by Carrie Underwood, a fitness and lifestyle brand that has become a popular choice for activewear enthusiasts. She also authored the New York Times bestseller "Find Your Path," where she shared her approach to fitness and wellness. In 2020, she expanded her reach with the launch of fit52, a fitness app designed to promote healthy living. Her business ventures reflect her dedication to inspiring others to lead balanced and fulfilling lives. Carrie’s personal life has been as remarkable as her career. In 2010, she married Mike Fisher, a former professional hockey player. The couple has two sons, Isaiah Michael Fisher, born in 2015, and Jacob Bryan Fisher, born in 2019. Carrie has been open about the challenges she faced in building her family, including experiencing multiple miscarriages before Jacob’s birth. These personal struggles deeply influenced her album "Cry Pretty," showcasing her ability to turn adversity into art. Her family remains a cornerstone of her life, and she frequently shares glimpses of their adventures on social media, endearing her even more to her fans. Carrie has also taken her talents to the stage in ways beyond music. She has performed as Maria von Trapp in the live television production of "The Sound of Music" and has consistently delivered powerhouse performances at major events, including the Super Bowl and various award shows. Her ability to captivate audiences across different platforms has further cemented her status as an entertainment powerhouse. In January 2025, Carrie made headlines when she announced her participation in President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, where she is set to perform "America the Beautiful." The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans questioning her choice and others applauding her for staying true to her beliefs. This move underscores Carrie’s willingness to take bold stands, even when they invite controversy. She has also been announced as a new judge on "American Idol," bringing her career full circle by returning to the show that launched her to fame. Fans are excited to see her mentor aspiring artists and share her wealth of experience. As an artist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Carrie Underwood continues to evolve and inspire. • In the late 90's a group of Toowoomba business people, civic leaders and the city's church community come together with an audacious plan - stage a gospel music festival that will bring people into the city over the Easter weekend.

Despite humble beginnings, Easterfest (formerly the Australian Gospel Music Festival) grew to achieve major event status in Queensland, and became one of the largest ticketed drug and alcohol free events in the southern hemisphere.

But only a few years after their biggest event, Easterfest became yet another casualty of the music festival business.

It's been a decade since the final festival in 2015, and this podcast series will look back at how Easterfest grew to become a major player in Christian music internationally, and the events that led to the event coming to an end.

It's a celebration of almost two decades of music, community and a spirit of unity, with the story told by the organisers, volunteers and the musicians that graced the stages of Easterfest.

The Rise & Fall of Easterfest is written and hosted by Justin Rouillon and is a production of 96five Studios.

  • “Oh Christmas Tree,” known in its original German as “O Tannenbaum,” is one of the most enduring and beloved songs of the holiday season. Its simple yet heartfelt lyrics celebrate the beauty and resilience of the evergreen tree, a symbol that has come to represent the enduring spirit of Christmas. But the story of this iconic carol is as layered and fascinating as the holiday traditions it accompanies. From its roots in German folk culture to its global popularity as a Christmas anthem, “Oh Christmas Tree” is a testament to how music can evolve and resonate across time and cultures. The origins of “O Christmas Tree” lie not in Christmas but in the broader cultural symbolism of the evergreen tree. For centuries, the evergreen has been admired for its ability to stay lush and vibrant throughout the coldest months of winter. In many European cultures, the evergreen was seen as a symbol of hope, endurance, and renewal, providing a sense of life and continuity during the barren winter months. This admiration found its way into music, including folk songs like “O Tannenbaum,” which praised the tree’s enduring beauty. The first known version of the lyrics to “O Tannenbaum” dates back to the 16th century, though it wasn’t initially associated with Christmas. The song’s earliest form was a traditional German folk tune that paid homage to the evergreen tree as a metaphor for faithfulness and steadfastness. In these early versions, the lyrics were reflective and romantic rather than celebratory, likening the tree’s unwavering green to ideals of loyalty and strength. The song as we know it began to take shape in the early 19th century when Joachim August Zarnack, a German teacher and songwriter, adapted the traditional folk tune with new lyrics in 1819. Zarnack’s version compared the evergreen’s unchanging nature to a lover’s faithfulness, continuing the tradition of using the tree as a metaphor. However, it was another German composer, Ernst Anschütz, who cemented the song’s place in history. In 1824, Anschütz revised Zarnack’s lyrics to create a version explicitly celebrating the beauty of the evergreen tree. His adaptation became immensely popular, particularly during the Christmas season, when the Tannenbaum (Christmas tree) took on a central role in holiday traditions. During the 19th century, the Christmas tree became a focal point of holiday celebrations in Germany and beyond. The practice of bringing evergreen trees into homes and decorating them with candles, ornaments, and ribbons was gaining popularity, especially in upper-class households. As this tradition spread throughout Europe and into North America, “O Tannenbaum” naturally became associated with Christmas. Its lyrics, which extolled the evergreen’s enduring green, perfectly complemented the festive atmosphere and the symbolic meaning of the Christmas tree. The song crossed cultural and linguistic boundaries as German immigrants carried it with them to other parts of the world. In the United States, where German immigrants played a significant role in shaping Christmas traditions, “O Tannenbaum” quickly became a holiday favorite. The song was translated into English and adapted into what we now know as “Oh Christmas Tree.” While the English version retained the melody and spirit of the original, it simplified the lyrics to focus more directly on the Christmas tree’s role in holiday festivities. The enduring appeal of “Oh Christmas Tree” lies in its universality and adaptability. Its lyrics celebrate the evergreen’s beauty and its symbolic connection to resilience and renewal, themes that resonate deeply with the holiday spirit. Whether sung in English, German, or any of the many other languages into which it has been translated, the song evokes a sense of warmth, tradition, and togetherness. Over the years, “Oh Christmas Tree” has become a staple of holiday music, performed by choirs, carolers, and recording artists of all genres. Its gentle melody and heartfelt lyrics make it a favorite for family gatherings and community celebrations. The song’s simplicity allows for endless interpretations, from solemn and reverent renditions to joyful and playful arrangements. The imagery of the Christmas tree itself has played a significant role in the song’s popularity. The tree, adorned with lights, ornaments, and garlands, represents the heart of many holiday traditions. It is where families gather to exchange gifts, where children place their wishes for Santa Claus, and where friends and loved ones create lasting memories. “Oh Christmas Tree” captures this central symbol of the holiday season, celebrating not only its physical beauty but also its deeper meaning. One of the reasons for the song’s enduring popularity is its ability to adapt to different cultural contexts. While its roots are in German folk music, its themes are universal, allowing it to resonate with people across the world. In some traditions, the song is seen as a reflection on the beauty of nature, while in others, it serves as a hymn of gratitude for the simple joys of life. Its versatility ensures that it remains relevant and beloved, no matter how it is interpreted. Today, “Oh Christmas Tree” is an inseparable part of the holiday soundtrack. It is performed in schools, churches, and homes; it features in films, television specials, and Christmas albums. Its melody is instantly recognizable, evoking feelings of nostalgia and warmth. For many, it is a song that bridges generations, connecting the past and present through shared traditions and celebrations. As we sing “Oh Christmas Tree” during the holiday season, we continue a tradition that spans centuries and cultures. Its gentle melody and heartfelt lyrics remind us to appreciate the beauty of the season and the enduring spirit of the evergreen tree. In its simplicity, the song captures the essence of Christmas: a time for gratitude, togetherness, and the celebration of life’s most enduring joys. The journey of “Oh Christmas Tree” from a folk tune about the evergreen’s beauty to a global Christmas anthem is a testament to the power of music to adapt and thrive across time and cultures. It is a song that celebrates nature, tradition, and the magic of the holiday season, ensuring that its place in our hearts and homes will remain evergreen. This has been a Quiet Please production.
