Throughout the 8-part series, former CNN anchor Nina Dos Santos and regular BBC radio voice Owen Bennett-Jones will be joined by former spies, disinformation researchers and government officials to examine who exactly is trying to “control’ the narrative, which “alternative facts” are they using and where will such “deception” end?

  • On the 31st of July 2024, Somerset Council’s Executive will hold a public meeting at Frome Town Hall. At that meeting they will publicly announce who will be chosen to develop Saxonvale, a 12-acre Brownfield mixed-used site in the heart of Frome.

The choice is between Acorn, a residential developer, and Mayday Saxonvale a community-led not-for-profit social enterprise, with a model of community ownership and value retention.

Mayday’s scheme is well supported in the town, and its model could be an archteype for a new, perhaps better way of doing development. But, with a local authority on its knees financially, and rumours of secret contracts and closed-door deals, is that enough?

For the past six months, I’ve been conducting interviews and researching what could be called the Saxonvale saga, a story that’s far from having an ending.

Why has this brownfield site garnered such strong local feeling, made national news and why do many think that Somerset Council’s decision will heavily influence the future of the town for the decades to come?

  • The IER is delighted to launch our new podcast. In this 6-part series, our labour law experts will be dissecting the new employment legislation brought forward by Sir Keir Starmer's Labour government.

As many of our readers will know, the IER have been informing the debate on improving and strengthening labour laws for workers over the last 30 years. This body of work (undertaken on a voluntary basis by our labour law academics and lawyers) provided the blueprint for Labour's green paper on employment rights, New Deal for Workers document, their National Policy Forum document, and now their 'Making Work Pay' proposals, which are being brought to life by the Government's proposed Employment Rights Bill. Join us, as our experts consider how the proposals in the Bill measure up, and as we highlight the pitfalls and the possibilities the Bill may pose for the UK's 33 million workers.

The IER Podcast is kindly supported by Thompsons Solicitors.
