Design is a wild and complicated business to get into. Of all the designers out there, somehow we all end up doing it differently. In the school of design, they don’t teach you that your business should be done a certain way, they just teach you the art of design and the different types of design: commercial, residential, etc., or little classes that teach you how to do things like purchase orders, sales estimates, how to work with vendors, and internal trade secrets that you’ll need to know, but how to run a business is much more broad and really just comes down to the individual and their way of doing things.
What we’re watching right now on TV 2:00
What is the business of design like after college? 8:00
Stay busy 19:00
A lot of ways to do things 22:20
Everyone wears a lot of hats 25:00
Where will you be the most satisfied? 30:25
Self evaluation 32:20
Attach yourself to people you admire and respect, and you must be passionate and confident in your style 34:30
“I do think that those with a good attitude are also grateful, and when you’re grateful, I feel like you’re anxiously engaged. When you’re not grateful, you’re like ‘Oh, lucky you. You get me.’ But those that are grateful work better with other people. They’re humble, and they learn faster. If you can be humble, you’ll learn a lot faster. You’ll get to the finish line on any project you’re working on a lot quicker, when you’re grateful.” 21:44

Window treatments can be a large investment, considering the size of windows increasing, so we want you to get this right the first time. We talk about the options you have: Drapes, curtains, blinds, and shutters. We talk about what each will feel like, how each react to light, privacy levels, where you need window treatment, and where you could do without. Join us as we discuss what might be the missing thing linking your room together.

If you don’t know me yet, I’m Marc Muskens, born with a fanatical obsession for interior design! Together with my friend and business partner Sven van Buuren, I’m the owner of interior design firm Masters of Interior Design and we’re the founders of The Institute of Interior Impact; with a community - as we speak - over 165.000 interior design professionals.
It’s a global Institute where we connect and train interior designers from around the world. I care a great deal about ‘how’ it looks, but I’m even more interested in ‘why’ it’s looks like that.
That's why we started this podcast: Beyond Interior Design.
We will invite inspiring interior design experts that have a great story to tell and love to dig deeper. Of course we would like to surround ourselves in a beautiful environment, but the higher goal or purpose is creating designs that contribute: designed for the long term.
Our environment has a huge impact on us as human beings. On how we live, how we work, how we play… how we act, react, behave… how we grow. Together we have the power to design this world. And in my opinion: Who has the power, has the responsibility.
We are the #changemakers of the world. We have always been, through all of humanity. Look at the Egyptian empire, the pyramids. And what about the Roman empire? More than 2000 years later, people still come to Rome to admire the might and strength of Roman architecture and design. And it all started with an idea… Every single building started with an idea, a sketch from a creative mind. We can ‘decide’ to make a change.
So, what does the interior design future look like? Together we can shape it. We have the power to not only shape our own future, but the future of the world we live in.
As you know, change comes in waves. Sometimes rapidly and sometimes slowly. Well… the world around us is changing rapidly, we know that! But does our profession?
We’re going to explore exiting combinations of interior design and health, interior design and technology, psychology, sustainability, culture, nature, entrepreneurship and for sure other sometimes unknown areas. We’re going to fly high and dive deep. And straight through if we have to.
