I am a tea freak. Tea has a long and glorious history. Today we are telling one part of that story, concerning the finest tea, pu’er.
To the best of my ability, the stories I tell are historical fact, not fiction. I dress up the stories to make them sound better, but they are all based on historical fact. This time, however, I am telling a folk story from Yunnan, and cannot vouch for how factual it is. But it’s a great story, one of my favorites, and I think you’ll enjoy it, too.

今天的故事從大禹的父母，鯀與有莘氏的女兒修己開始。修己吃了薏苡（薏仁）而懷孕，所以舜帝賜姓姒（苡、姒都從「以」得聲）。夏朝末，二龍出現，留下DNA（漦），千年後，童謠「檿弧箕箙，實亡周國」，小妾遇玄黿而千代美人褒姒出現了。。。好複雜齁。故事精彩，慢慢聽就明白了。
最近講鄭莊公、鄭武公，今說鄭武公出生前一年的事，西元前七七一年。申侯也上場。

Our last episode told about the ruler Chuang / Zhuang of Cheng / Zheng in the 8th century BCE. Today we learn about his father, the ruler Wu, which means martial, powerful. He married his daughter to the neighboring Hu country, with certain plans in mind. Kuan Ch’isi / Guan Qisi paid a high price for his unintentional part in this plan.

Our story today begins in 761 bce, when the ruler of Cheng/Zheng married the daughter of the ruler of Shen. Her first son was a difficult delivery, coming out feet first, so she named him Breech Birth and carried a grudge against him. She preferred her second (surviving) son, Tuan / Duan, and encouraged him to overthrow Breech Birth, once he had succeeded to the throne, as Ruler Chuang / Zhuang, which means "impressive."

東周初年，西元前七六一年，鄭武公娶了申侯女兒，叫武姜，生了寤生、共叔段。媽媽偏心，希望弟弟可以篡位，看鄭莊公怎麼處理。沿途發生很多破音字，如共（一聲）、祭（ㄓㄞˋ）、洩洩（ㄧˋ ㄧˋ）與借字（寤/啎、忤），可是故事照樣精彩。

In the 1467, the Yao people revolted and were put down. Young men and boys were taken to the capital and castrated. One young eunuch, Wang Chih / Zhi, rose in power and in 1477 was put in charge of the dreaded West Agency, an intelligence organization reporting directly to the emperor. The emperor Hsien / Xian was a dullard who gave Wang free rein. Another eunuch, an actor known only as Ah-Ch’o / Ah-Cho, cleverly alerted the emperor to Wang’s overreach.

Ti Ch’ing / Di Qing was born poor in 1008 ce. He may have committed some crime when he was young, because he had a tattoo on his face, and was sent to serve in the army on the border. He was a skilled mounted archer and rose through the ranks. Perhaps because of the tattoo, he often wore a mask into battle. He was very clever and found ways to reach his objective without too much exertion or loss of life.

The Tang dynasty was a time of glory, literature, and elegance, but especially in the later half, it was not a good time for the bulk of the population. The Emperor Hsüan / Xuan stayed in power too long, trusted horrible people, and countenanced An Lushan (Kang Roxan)’s revolt, leading to enormous suffering.
In the 770s, a commander named Wang Kuoliang/Guoliang was put in such a position by his superior, Hsin Chingkao / Xin Jinggao that he saw no choice but to revolt. The Emperor asked Kuan Po / Guan Bo for advice, but the King Kao of Ts’ao (Gao of Cao) solved the problem without bloodshed.

Liu Pang (Bang) was born in a low position in Chu in the Warring States period, and was about 30 when Chu was conquered by Ch’in/Qin. Ch’in unified China in 221 bce, but did not last long. When the Ch’in fell, a powerful Ch’u family, the Hsiang/ Xiang, set about to rebuild Ch’u. Soon Hsiang Yü and Liu Pang were at odds, and Liu was afraid for his life.
