  • The Murders of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope: A Controversial Case

In this episode, Kelsey and Emily delve into one of New Zealand's most infamous mysteries—the disappearances of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope on New Year's Eve 1997. The pair vanished after boarding a boat with a mystery man, and despite extensive searches, their bodies were never found. 26-year-old Scott Watson was convicted of their murders based largely on circumstantial evidence and later-discredited witness testimonies, but he has always maintained his innocence.

The episode examines Watson's controversial conviction, the shaky evidence presented at trial, and the ongoing debate about whether the right man was imprisoned. Join the hosts as they navigate through this complex case, questioning the reliability of the evidence and discussing if justice was truly served.

  • Today I am going to tell you about the horrific murder of Sade Robinson. On April 1st, 2024, Sade went on a first date with 33-year-old Maxwell Anderson, who she presumably met on a dating app. After dinner, Anderson allegedly lured Sade to his home where he allegedly threatened her with a gun and forced her into his basement, which he had prepared beforehand by covering the ceiling, floors, and walls with plastic tarps. He then allegedly murdered and dismembered Sade, before scattering her remains around Milwaukee. He is set to be put on trial for the crimes in May of 2025.

  • [Part 3 of 3]

The day after Christmas, 1996, Patsy Ramsey woke up early to get her family ready for a flight. On the staircase of her home, she found a 2.5 page ransom note informing her and her husband John that their daughter, 6-year-old JonBenét had been taken. It noted that if the family paid $118,000 in ransom, they would get her back.

However, this promise was an empty one, as JonBenét's body was discovered in the basement of the home that afternoon, despite multiple searches. Many believe that it was someone in the Ramsey family who killed JonBenét, but could it have been an intruder?

  • 14-year-old Max DeVries disappeared while jet-skiing with a stranger his family met during a vacation in Aruba in 2004. Authorities initially ruled Max's loss as a tragic accident, but the man’s account of what happened on the water raised suspicions for the DeVries family.

When it was revealed that the man had a very troubling past, the family became convinced that Max’s disappearance was not accidental but a deliberate act. Was it truly a tragic incident at sea, as officials claimed, or is there a more sinister reality behind Max's fate?

  • On May 14th, 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson drove his car into a ditch, but, by his own account, was not injured. He called his parents for help, but was unable to describe exactly where he was. He had been on the phone with them for over 45 minutes when he yelled “oh shit!” The line then went silent, and despite the fact that the car was found, Brandon was never seen again, and to this day, no one knows what happened to him.

Was he the victim of foul play, did he decide to walk away from his life, or did a series of accidents not only take Brandon’s life but also hide his body away forever?

  • In 2020, 35-year-old Jessica Lewis and 27-year-old Austin Wenner were shot and killed by their landlord, Michael Dudley. Dudley then dismembered their bodies, put them into dufflebags and suitcases, and scattered their remains across bodies of water and forested areas in and around Seattle.

The first set of remains was discovered by a group of teenagers, who posted a series of TikTok videos documenting their discovery. In this episode, not only do we tell Jessica and Austin’s story, but we discuss what is the proper way to act if you ever were to (God-forbid) discover human remains.

  • On July 16th, 2011, 17-year-old Tyler Hadley brutally murdered his parents, Blake and Mary Jo Hadley, with a hammer. He then cleaned up the crime scene, hid the bodies in the master bedroom, and through a party in the house with over 60 people. But what could have possibly been the motive for such a heinous and heartless act against the two people that gave him life? Honestly, we can't figure it out. Plus, this is A Trial by Podcast, so as always, we'll let you be the judge.
