This week, we’re excited to sit down with a new guest, Rowell Guevarra. In addition to being regarded as one of the top fly fishing guides in the state, Rowell is also actively involved in a number of philanthropic groups in the fishing community, such as the Native Fish Coalition, Project Healing Waters, the Mayfly Project, and the OARS foundation. He’s a staunch advocate of Alabama’s wild spaces and native species, and a big believer in the therapeutic value of fishing. Join us as he talks about summertime bass fishing on the Tallapoosa river and the healing properties of a day on the water.

Next up we have Dip McMillian reporting in from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Regular listeners know that Dip is always tuned into the crappie bite, but this week he reports that he had a day of fishing where “no matter what you did, you caught fish.” Join us as we talk Tensaw River crappie, side scan tips, shad, coon hunting, and the upcoming Dippie Outdoors Kids Tournament.

It’s hot and getting hotter, so this week we’re here with Andre Davis to talk about a surefire way to beat the heat: cooling your toes in the Cahaba and Black Warrior tributaries. Andre has been hammering bass and panfish on topwater flies, and is here this week to give us the secrets on going toe-to-fin with tributary fish. Join us as we talk wading tips, “run-n-gun” fishing strategies, and fly fishing lessons.

If wading isn’t your game, Eric Cagle is here to talk to us this week about deep water summer crappie. What to do when still, hot water and heavy fishing pressure puts a hurt on your fishing?

Get up early and fish deeper, according to Eric, or try your hand at night fishing with lights. This week Eric gives us a deep dive on a tactic that is common with those who “know what’s up” around Lake Martin, night fishing dock lights or with specialty submersible lights. Stick around as Eric shares his thoughts on the (lack of) importance of color in crappie jigs, the importance of realizing when you’re wasting time on lock-jawed schools, jigs vs minnows, and the differences between the Coosa/Tallapoosa reservoirs and the Big 4 Mississippi Lakes.

This week we’re sitting down with two extremely accomplished anglers to talk about something on every freshwater angler’s mind–big bass.

First up we have Steve Graziano from Lake Eufaula on the Chattahoochee River. Steve has caught his fair share of bass and then some over the decades he’s been guiding and fishing pro, and this week he’s here to share where he finds big bass and how he fishes for them as summer bears down on the Southeastern US.

Next we have Peter Jordan, a ferocious bass chaser who grew up on the Alabama River and now chases bass in the tidal waters around Mobile Bay. Peter is on this week to talk about what conditions allow bass to get big, what behavior traits separate big bass from smaller ones, which times of year are best to catch bass, and the importance of being realistic about what a “big” bass is in your local water.

If you’ve never explored the shoals in central Alabama that are home to the world-famous Cahaba Lilies, there’s no time like the present. In celebration of these otherworldly-looking flowers, we’re sitting down with two guests this week that live in the heart of Cahaba Lily country.

First up, we have Peter John Cole reporting in from the Cahaba. Peter reports that the topwater game is on in his neck of the woods and that the 2024 Cahaba Lily Fest had a great turnout with the lilies in full bloom.

Next we have Sandra Fuller with Lake Martin Tallapoosa County Tourism, who is here to talk about the upcoming Tallapoosa River Fest. This is the third year her organization has put on a group float on the Harold Banks Canoe trail from Horseshoe Bend to Jaybird, and this year the event has grown to include camping and a festival with live music, vendors, and food trucks. If you’re looking for an easy but fun float with great scenery and a shot at some great fishing, you won’t want to miss this event.

Finally, we have Dip McMillian reporting in from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Dip was joined by ATX Lure Co.’s Kyle Reeves last weekend at Boutwell’s Bait and Tackle for a Crappie Seminar that has grown tremendously since its inception. Join us to hear where they found the crappie after the event, and stick around to hear Dip’s thoughts on the upcoming summer patterns on the delta and lower Tombigbee and Alabama systems.

We’ve got exciting reports this week coming in from all over the state of Alabama this week.

First up we have Taylor Hara reporting in from the Wiregrass Region around Dothan, AL. Taylor has been catching Choctaw Bass, Largemouth Bass, and sunfish that are moving up into the small rivers and tributaries that lace Southeastern Alabama. Tune in to learn about Taylor’s skinny-water secret: an inflatable stand-up paddleboard.

Next we have Adam Hudson, CEO of Blue Line Co. and avid smallmouth bass angler. “Smallies” are starting to move off of the main river into the tributaries, making them easy targets for fly fishermen. Join us this week as Adam talks about some of his favorite flies for smallmouth, as well as fishing tips for gar, Rock Bass, and other Tennessee River System species.

Finally, rounding out this week’s report we have Jason Throneberry, who serves as the Director of Freshwater Programs for The Nature Conservancy in Alabama. Tune in to hear Jason discuss the innovative bypass channels designed to aid the migration of sturgeon and gulf strain striped bass, providing insights into the development and challenges of this project. He also highlights the significant preservation of 8,000 acres in Clarke County and shares how this effort fits into TNC’s broader conservation strategy. Additionally, Jason reflects on his personal journey as an outdoorsman, revealing how his experiences have shaped his dedication to conservation. Join us for an in-depth conversation on the future of Alabama's freshwater ecosystems and how we can all contribute to their protection.

Spring is transitioning to summer in Alabama, and the fishing action continues to heat up throughout the state.

This week reporting in from Lake Pickwick on the Tennessee River we have Tracy Humber. Crappie are in a “slump” right now according to Tracy, who has turned his attention towards bluegill and shellcracker while he waits for the slabs to begin stacking on deep water summertime structure. Join us as we talk bluegill beds, dropshotting for bluegill, strategies for big bluegill, and filleting vs whole-frying these delicious and feisty panfish.

Coming in from the other end of the state we have Peter Jordan, who owns the Lost Angler Fly Shop. Peter has been beating the heat by turning to the numerous blackwater streams that lace the the Gulf Coast, and this week he offers tips on how to target feisty Spotted Bass on fly and conventional tackle. We talk wading boots, fly tying, bowfin, and a little inshore fishing. For newcomers or vacationers to the Mobile Bay area, the causeway offers a unique opportunity to go “bass fishing” for specks, redfish, and flounder if the conditions are right.

The cold nights seem to be fading away as summer fast approaches, and the fishing in Alabama’s rivers and streams is as good as it gets right now.

This week we’re joined by Stephen Rockarts with Fly Fishing Alabama. If you’ve never caught the Cahaba Lilies in full bloom and pulled Alabama and Cahaba Bass from the shoals, you’ll want to tune in this week for good intel to plan your new favorite trip around.

Next up we have Andre Davis reporting in from Central Alabama. Andre is reporting tremendous numbers of hungry panfish and bass in the streamways in his section of the state, and reminds us this week that now is the perfect time to experiment with new baits and build confidence in them.

Finally, we have Justin Michael Dunnam down on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, reporting on an exciting new collaboration between Mobtown Kayak Bass Fishing and Bassmasters.

Spring is coming along nicely, with crappie starting to move off of the banks and onto structure across the state. The bass bite is staying strong, and the bluegill are starting to go on bed. It’s a great time to be an angler, and this week we’ve got some great topics lined up.

First up we have Dip McMillian reporting in from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. As usual, Dip is on the crappie, seeming to know what they’re going to do even before they know themselves! Dip reports that crappie are scattered now in 8-10 feet of water, and that anglers able to target them can expect to pull in some really big ones. While the springtime limb-line bite is winding down, Dip is also still finding success with big blues and flatheads. Finally, we’re proud to see Dip get some recognition for his skills in the form of a new color offered by ATX Lure Company, the “Dippi Tensaw Special.” If you fish muddy or stained water, be sure to grab a pack the next time you’re in town.

Stay tuned to hear from former AFFR Host, Brian Senn. Brian has been catching some fish himself lately, and gives a mini-report on the smallmouth fishery up on the Tennessee River. While we’re thrilled to hear a familiar voice back on the show, Brian also brings sad news for the Alabama fishing community. Brandon Watson, accomplished kayak angler and valued AFFR contributor, has recently passed away. Our hearts go out to his family in this difficult time. As a tribute to Brandon, we’re revisiting a segment he recorded with Brian last year in early May. Please join us in remembering a daring and adventurous kayak angler who was always eager to help his fellow fishermen.

First up we have Tony Adams reporting in from Lake Eufala. Tony has been hammering crappie this spring, despite high and muddy water, and this week he’s here on the show to share some of his secrets for success. While he’s primarily a crappie angler, Tony is also a big fan of jug-fishing for catfish. He’s known for pulling cats out of deep water on jugs, with some of his lines running as deep as 60 feet! Stay tuned to hear how he rigs his jugs, his preferred catfish baits, and how he decides where to set his lines.

After that, we have Steve Graziano giving us a deep-dive on how to find deep water bluegill beds on side scan sonar. Most anglers think of bluegill as bedding shallow, and will search for beds with polarized lenses or “with their nose,” but big ‘gills often bed in deeper water, and if you can learn to locate these deeper bedding areas you can find some of the hottest fishing late spring and early summer have to offer.

This week, we’ve got special guest Ben Roussel with the Gulf Coast Council of Fly Fishers International. Ben is here this week to talk about the Suncatch Slam. Almost every freshwater angler in the state started their fishing career with a big, fat Bluegill or Redear Sunfish, but few are aware of just how many “panfish” inhabit Alabama’s waters. The Suncatch Slam exists to encourage anglers to get out and explore the Gulf Coast areas lesser-known waterways and discover their astonishing biodiversity, and it’s a pile of fun to boot! Join us as Ben discusses Dollar Sunfish, Spotted Sunfish, Redbreast Sunfish, Fliers, and other lesser-known species. We talk all about the best gear for these small-but-beautiful species, and some tips on how to catch them.

First up we have Steve “Graz” Graziano reporting from Lake Eufala on the Chattahoochee River. Graz was fresh off the boat after an awesome trip this week when we recorded, having just put a client on his PB Largemouth, a 7 lb stud that made the mistake of hanging out too close to Graz’s boat. Fish are big and plentiful right now in the shallow waters of Lake Eufaula, and Graz has the information you need to get on them before they start heading back to deeper waters as the year wears on.

Next up we have Dip McMillian from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Dip reports catching scattered crappie in that are still up shallow, but starting to disperse after the spawn. Dip was loading up his tackle box as we spoke to get ready to run limb lines for big flathead and blue cats this evening. Stay tuned to hear how Dip builds and baits his lines for jumbo catfish, and stick around to the end to hear where you’ll be able to meet Dip in person on April 6th.

Finally we’re joined by John Radle with Bauer Fly Reels. If you’re looking to upgrade the reel on your redfish, bluegill, or redeye bass rod this spring, John is here to give you the scoop on what to look for in a good fly fishing reel.

Join us as Andre shares his best panfish tips, as well as how to keep kids engaged and entertained out on the water.

Next up we have Taylor Hara reporting from the Wiregrass Region of the state. Taylor is a new guest who fishes a new waterway, the Choctawhatchee River. The Choctawhatchee, as well as the Conecuh, Pea, and Sepulga Rivers are all awesome waterways that are perfect for anglers looking to soak up spring and see something new this year. If you’re a bass fanatic, you’ll definitely want to hear Taylor give his best tips on how to pursue Choctaw Bass, a unique species of black bass endemic to these waterways.

Finally we have Will Strickland with Mobile Baykeepers joining us for a live segment at Live Oak Landing on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. This week Will is here to talk about water levels and conditions on the delta, give us an update on the SHOR ACT, and give his thoughts on arsenic pollution in the state.

This week, we’ve got Eric Cagle reporting on the fishing up on the “Big Four” crappie lakes in Mississippi. Eric has been taking a break from his home waters on the Coosa and Tallapoosa, and is capitalizing on the spring bite on Grenada Lake. Join us this week as we talk about BIG (3 lb) crappie, the difference between black and white crappie, the best lures colors for muddy water, and more.

Next up we have Stephen Rockarts over on the Cahaba River system outside of Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Stephen has been getting on some huge Alabama Bass lately, and is excited to see bass actively feeding in the shallower waters where they’re easily accessible to anglers. This week, Stephen reveals his favorite bass fly patterns, gives his take on what conditions trigger the bass spawn, and muses on the difficulties posed by targeting redhorse and buffalo fish on fly tackle.

Rounding out the week we have Jack West with the Alabama Rivers Alliance. A northeast Alabama resident, Jack is a passionate angler and outdoorsman, as well as a staunch advocate of our waterways. This week, Jack is here to give us a birds eye view of the many issues our waters face, and weigh in on how those issues directly and indirectly affect anglers. Stay tuned to hear us discuss common pollutants, the impact of dams on fish migrations, and the importance of a state water management plan to safeguard against over-utilization of Alabama’s precious water.

This week, we head on over to east Alabama to check out what’s happening on the Chattahoochee. Resident experts Clayton Batts and Steve “The Graz” Graziano have great news: spring is here, spawn is on the way, and it’s the time of year to have a great day cranking in bass and crappie out on Lake Eufaula. In addition to discussing tactics for early spring, join us as Clayton talks about his pre-trip weather and water condition checklist, and as Graz talks about what makes an angler a joy to have on board for a day.

With spring comes excellent shallow water, topwater bass action, and joining us this week we have Richard Nicoletti with Cortland Line Company to talk warmwater fly lines for bass and bluegill. Spring is here, and fishing across the southeast is heating up in a big way. Joining us this week we have Jason Whitehead from up on Lake Guntersville on the Tennessee River system. Jason is pleased to report that fishing conditions are good on Guntersville, with the warming water providing anglers plenty of opportunities at both bass and crappie on this legendary fishery. Join us as he discusses pre-spawn strategies for each species, and offers words of wisdom to anglers sharing popular waters with “the competition.”

Next up we have Dip McMillian down on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Fishing is still a little slow further south, where heavy rains get backed up a little as they enter the Mobile Bay. While conditions aren’t perfect yet, they’re improving quickly, and after an exploratory trip last weekend Dip is excited about what the next couple of weeks will bring. Join us as we talk shallow water fishing for crappie, and discuss why anglers notice disproportionately high concentrations of black or white crappie depending on which stretch of the water they’re on.

Finally, we have an interview with Nicholas Conklin with TFO Rods. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Nicholas by Peter Jordan with the Lost Angler Fly Shop while cruising through the Atlanta Fly Fishing Show earlier this year, and this week I was happy to catch back up with him and discuss how to choose a “working man’s” fly rod. Chris is the personality behind Send It Jon Boats, while Ryan produces the Fireant Fishing channel. Today they’re here to talk about jon boat to bass boat conversions. Bass boat prices have increased enormously in recent years, and many shore-bound anglers are turning to purchasing jon boat hulls and “decking them out” with rod lockers, tackle storage, livewells, and state-of-the-art electronics; turning them into “DIY” bass boats that excel in small water.

Join us as we discuss who a Jon Boat build is right for, how much it costs, and how to do it right the first time.

This week we’re joined by Anthony Rabern with Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Earlier in the year we talked about Georgia’s Black Bass Slam, and this week Anthony is here to discuss their Trout Slam. Join us as we talk about the state’s efforts to stock brown and rainbow trout, and to hear about the wild brook trout populations in the Chattahoochee National forest. If you’re looking for a good excuse to find yourself “cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown” in Georgia’s mountains, you won’t want to miss this segment

Next up we have Norm Latona with Southeastern Pond Management, here today to talk about pond fountains and pond aeration systems. Now is a great time to start thinking about getting ahead of the stratification that warm weather can bring to a pond, and today Norm talks about what aerators, fountains, and destratifiers will and won’t do for your private pond.

This week we’re joined by the Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report host, Butch Thierry. Butch and I sit down with Dan Spengler, who is a Senior Project Engineer with Berkley. Berkley just introduced two new forward-facing sonar optimized baits, and this week Dan is here to explain how these baits help you quickly and easily target fish at different depths as they appear on your screen. Join us as Dan shares his history with Berkley (stretching all the way back to his childhood), and talks about all of the work that goes into perfecting new baits at Berkley.

Next up we have Tina Morrison, who is the Executive Director of Greater Gadsden Area Tourism. Gadsden stocks rainbow trout annually, making it one of the only places in Alabama where anglers can fly fish for these western species. With the waters throughout the state still chilly, these cold-tolerant fish are a great opportunity to shake off the winter blues. Join us as Tina discusses the history of the stocking program, need-to-know rules for the fishery, and fun things for the whole family to do in the Greater Gadsden area.

First up this week we’ve got Justinn Overton with the Coosa Riverkeepers. Justin picks up where Will Strickland left off last week, giving us an in-depth explanation of PCBs and how elevated concentrations affect anglers. Using Choccolocco Creek as an example, she explains how this carcinogen can stay in the waterways for decades and bioaccumulate in bass tissue. If you’re “catch-and-keep” fisherman, you’ll want to tune in to hear more about Coosa Riverkeepers involvement in getting the SHOR Act passed so that fish consumption advisories become more easily accessible for outdoorsmen.

Next up we have Melissa Miller here to talk with us about the Mobile Boat Show. Boaters and anglers near the Mobile area won’t want to miss this local event, especially if you’re in the market for a new boat. Join us as we talk history, food, and water skiing squirrels.

Finally we have Paul Kabalin with Engel Coolers. While you may be most familiar with Engel high-quality coolers, dryboxes, and bait buckets, this week Paul is here to talk about their line of portable electric coolers and freezers. If you’ve ever had a hankerin’ for cold ice cream on your pontoon boat, or grown tired of making ice runs at deer camp, you’ll want to stay tuned to learn about the technology that makes these durable freezers stay icy-cold in some of the world’s harshest environments.
