While twelve colonies declared Independence on July 2, 1776, and approved the Declaration on July 4, New York refused to give its delegates to the Continental Congress permission to vote on Independence. On July 9th, after announcements that the twelve other states had declared their independence, New York finally acted. Message reached the Continental Congress on July 15th that the vote for independence was unanimous, with support in all thirteen states.

On October 7, 1795, the Ambassador Thomas Pinckney agreed to the first treaty between the US and Spain. The Treaty gave the US almost everything it wanted, especially the much sought after access to the Mississippi River.

Suprisingly little happened on July 4, 1775. The vote for independence was already complete. Congress simply approved the final wording of the Declaration and sent it to the printers.

On July 2, the Continental Congress voted for the resolution that the colonies should be free and independent states. Twelve of the thirteen voted in favor, with only New York abstaining.

On June 28, 1776, the Committee set up to draft a Declaration of Independence presents its draft to the Continental Congress. the Congress spends nearly a week, making changes to the document, including the removal of a paragraph condemning slavery.

On June 20, 1776 Continental forces break ground on Fort Washington. The fort was part of an effort to prevent the British Navy from being able to sail up the Hudson River.

In one of its first interpretations of the Constitution, the Supreme Court holds that states are subject to lawsuits in federal court. The states promptly alter that interpretation in the first Constitutional Amendment since the Bill of Rights.
