This episode will release the day before the US presidential election, but we hope it will be a conversation that speaks to you wherever and whenever it finds you. We are living in stressful times and so Ethan and Laura invited The Rev. Steven D. Paulikas on to share about how Christians locate hope in the midst of political uncertainty.

This week, Laura and Ethan are joined by Dr. Toni Alimi for a conversation about The Tough Stuff in our scripture and tradition. From Augustine to @ladygaga to materialism to Jacob, we cover a lot of ground, all rooted in the essential question: how do we hold disparate and hard things in tension, especially when it's about our faith?
Toni Alimi lives in Ithaca, NY, with his wife and their daughter. He teaches philosophy at Cornell University.
Toni's latest book can be found here: Slaves of God: Augustine and Other Romans on Religion and Politics

The word of God is living and active, but what does this mean? How do we read scripture after it has been used as a tool for harm? Join us for this conversation where Laura and Ethan share some of the things they love about the Bible and some approaches to reading it devotionally in our lives.

What is grief and how might our faith speak to our experiences of loss? We are joined by sad boy Rev. Gregory Stark and guest co-host Rev. Ethan Lowery to talk about life, death, poetry, Eucharist, hamburgers, and grief.
The Rev. Gregory Stark is a current PhD student in theology at the University of Cambridge, where he is researching the theology of grief and mourning in the art and activism around HIV/AIDS in the 1980s. He serves as the assistant chaplain at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He previously was coordinator for ministry with children and youth in the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe while he completed his research masters in theology at KU Leuven in Belgium.

We talk all the time about prayer but ... what exactly is it? What "counts" as prayer? Is prayer a merely intellectual exercise, or conversation, or monologue to God? Or is it embodied? Do we have to "feel" something in prayer? These are the questions we tackle with friends and experts, The Rev. Angela Tyler-Williams and The Rev. Adelyn Tyler-Williams on today's pod!

When we stand in the rubble of our faith, how do we know what we can rebuild on? When we're ready to lay down our lament and anger at all we were disillusioned by (or maybe even when we're not) how do we take the next step? Let's get into what it means to reconstruct after deconstructing.
Rev. Lizzie referenced this article: "Postcolonial Preaching in Intercultural Contexts" by Kwok Pui-lan for Episcopal Divinity School and Lessons in Belonging from a Church-Going Commitment Phobe by Erin Lane.

Under nearly every video, photo, or post we make on the internet as two women clergy, there is at least one comment that says: "Paul has entered the chat." It's meant as a snarky condemnation of our work as women leaders in Christian faith, implying - as many believe - that St. Paul thought GOD thought women should never lead. Or speak. Or do anything interesting in church except maybe ...give money?
Well, spoiler alert, as two women with six degrees and nine years of ordained ministry between us: we HAVE read the New Testament (a lot) and we are well aware what Paul says about women in ministry. And it's definitely not what the trolls seem to think.
So we're here to bust open the myth and the cherry-picking of Scripture that wants to keep St. Paul and women clergy small and silent. Join us as we dive into 1 Timothy 2:11–15 and its contrast in Deacon Phoebe, whom we meet in Romans 16, and so many more texts that explore how much Paul actually worked with and empowered women clergy, and walk with us as we unravel some of the clobber texts that have been used to attempt to silence us. Because we've entered the chat, too.

“Mom, does God love boys more than girls?” was the question Mariko's daughter asked her that led her on the path that produced The Book of Belonging, a storytelling Bible to help the next generation of kids understand the rich diversity of God’s people, emphasizing identity, contemplation, and wonder.
How do we approach the complexity of Scripture in a way that tells the truth of God to our children, and to ourselves? How can we emphasize stories that tell the breadth and depth of God's love for all people? We called in two experts - Rachel Eleanor and Mariko Clark - who are fresh off the printing press with their new book, a storytelling Bible called The Book of Belonging, to talk to us about these big questions and give us a behind-the-scenes peak of their creative process!

Maybe "Biblical Womanhood" is the friends we made along the way.
Lizzie and Laura dive into Proverbs 31 in this week's episode. Some Christians have interpreted this passage to be a literal picture of womanhood in a way that has been limiting and restrictive for women. A close reading of this passage reveals that it offers a picture of how EVERYONE should strive to live as followers of Christ, not just women. Join us for this lively discussion on this week's episode of And Also With You.

Parenting breaks us and build us up, and somewhere in the mess of gathering around toddler tables and in the unutterable losses, God is with us. Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward spiritual grace -- something we can see, taste, smell, touch, and hear -- that point us to a wild divine pattern interrupting our lives. Join us for a powerful conversation on how parenting and caregiving can be a sacramental act, and how to look for everyday moments that are actually seeped in the Holy, with Laura Kelly Fanucci, a theologian, writer, mother, and founder of Mothering Spirit.
CONTENT NOTE: In the last 10 minutes of this episode, there is discussion of miscarriage, premature delivery, and infant loss.

Featuring a lively and practical conversation with "progressive church lady" Allison Bird Treacy, we tackle the elephant in the room: church is great, but all faith really begins and is taught in the home. So ... how do we do that? Especially without it being forced, or weird, or otherwise an inorganic and miserable experience for everyone?

We are thrilled to be joined by two fellow Episcopal Clergy moms- the Rev. Canon Luz Cabrera Montes and the Rev. Hannah Pommersheim- in this episode as we have a conversation about bringing our faith home and sharing it with children! This is the first episode in our miniseries on kids, teens, and faith — for caregivers and parents alike, but also for reparenting the inner child in all of us as we come to meet Jesus as though we were little children.

Who is the Holy Spirit? How do we listen to Her in our lives? We are joined by (our!) spiritual director Annalise Hume in today's episode.
-
What do we mean when we say we "follow Jesus" in church? How do we follow Jesus in our lives? Today we are joined by with the Rev. Joseph Yoo who helps us answer these questions!
-
Many of us have been hurt by the institutional church and are left wondering what is the value of being part of a church. Can't we just worship God on our own? To help us answer this question we are joined by the Rev. Noah Evans to talk about how God works in and through the body of Christ, the Church.
-
We are answering some of your questions this week! Thanks for listening and your support.
-
In Easter we read stories of the resurrected Christ - where Jesus walks and talks and eats with his disciples. They struggle to make sense of the resurrection and yet Jesus still meets them in their disbelief. In this episode we talk about resurrection and how all of us are invited to live into it with Christ’s triumph over death. We are joined by Father Bo Reynolds for this wonderful discussion!
-
Every year on the Sunday after we celebrate Easter (so, technically, "Easter 2" since Easter is a SEASON that lasts for fifty days!) we hear the story of so-called "Doubting Thomas." It's a story often used to demean and demoralize our own doubts in the life of faith. But is that what Jesus does? (Spoiler alert: NO). Join us with fantastic guest The Rev. Ethan Lowery for this lively conversation!
