Nick Andrew, a 27 year old filmmaker, is determined to make a feature length documentary titled: I AM WOLF: Lifeblood Of The American Wild. It's an ambitious project that both he and his wife, Bekah, are passionate about.
There's one big problem, though. They don't have enough money, Nick's computer gear is old and outdated, and his filmmaking equipment is basic. Will limited funds and basic equipment stop Nick and Bekah from telling the story of the American wolf?
This is Nick's story of setting out to produce a feature length documentary of lofty creative aspirations on a barebones budget.

Photography and painting have much in common. Both the painter and photographer are concerned about composition, lighting, color, and story. Photography is a relatively recent invention compared to painting. When the first photograph was taken in 1826 by Joseph Niepce, the practice of the painter already had a history developed over many centuries. Truly, the craft and art of photography owes much to the legacy of the old masters.

John Reuter’s professional and artistic life is tightly interwoven with the story of the Polaroid 20x24 camera and the artists that used it to bring their creative visions to life. It’s an important story worth preserving. John has has worked tirelessly to keep the 20x24 Polaroid camera alive. Part 1 of my conversation with John (found in episode 230 of the Artful Camera) contains the history of image transfer, image lift, and direct manipulation of Polaroid images.
In part 2 of my conversation with John, the focus is on the artwork John created with the 20x24 Polaroid camera and the now rare Polacolor film. John reveals the creative process he used in making his evocative 20x24 Polacolor image transfers. The transfer image is just the beginning of a long process of creating many layers of “history” within the print. The process includes distressing the image and mark making with various pigments, oil pastels, and mediums. The end result is an image rich in texture and beauty.
John’s images are currently on exhibit at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre until August 5, 2017. The exhibit is called John Reuter: Second Impressions, Polaroid Process to Singapore Infrared.

John Reuter - artist, photographer, and director of the Polaroid 20x24 Project, returns to the Artful Camera. John has worked closely with a number of well known artists including Chuck Close, Robert Rauschenberg, William Wegman, Elsa Dorfman, Joyce Tenneson, and many others to help them bring their creative visions to life using the Polaroid 20x24 camera. However, John Reuter is an accomplished artist in his own right. This episode focuses on John and his work as an artist.
The exhibit John Reuter: Second Impressions, Polaroid Process to Singapore Infrared opened at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre on June 21, 2017, and runs through August 5th. It features 35 20x24 Polacolor Image Transfers created by John. Eight of these images are 4 panel assemblies measuring 42x52 inches and mounted on canvas. While many of the images featured in the exhibit date back as as early as 1988, the show features two new 4 panel pieces created by John in 2017 just for this exhibit.
In this episode John talks about the early history of using Polaroid images in mixed media art, and his own pioneering techniques in creating beautiful, evocative images that now line the walls of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre.

Brian Greenberg - owner of Richard Photo Lab - joins me in this episode of the Artful Camera. Brian started his career in the photo industry over 20 years ago. His photo career has spanned from photo assisting, processing, scanning, printing and customer service.
Before Brian bought Richard Photo Lab, it was originally owned by a man named - you guessed it - Richard. Richard immigrated from China to Hollywood, California. He opened a small, custom photo lab. Richard developed a strong reputation for superb craftsmanship. As a result, Richard acquired a small commercial photography customer base that remained intensely loyal to him.
Years later, Richard was looking to retire. Brian Greenberg saw an opportunity to uphold what Richard’s name represented - superb quality and customer service. Embracing that culture and building upon it has turned Richard Photo Lab into one of the premiere full service photo labs in the world. Their services - which include film development, film scanning, and printing - is not limited to just film photography. They serve digital photographers, too, with their outstanding print services and products.
Now you might be thinking this episode is just about a photo lab. It’s so much more than that as you will hear in this conversation. Steven Bernstein, ASC, is a writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and instructor. In this episode of the Artful Camera, Steve engages in a fascinating conversation about screenwriting, lighting, and the visual language of filmmaking.
Steve began his film career as a cinematographer in the United Kingdom, first doing documentaries, then commercials. He went on to shoot many landmark feature films for both studios and independents including the highly acclaimed Like Water For Chocolate and the Oscar winning motion picture Monster – starring Charlize Theron. That movie was directed by a name that should be familiar to all film goers today - Patty Jenkins - who is the director of Wonder Woman currently in theaters at the time this episode was recorded (June 2017).
Steve is the author of the best selling book Film Production. It’s about the process of film making. He has also authored several other books and screenplays. One of Steve’s most recent projects is a new film about Dylan Thomas, called Dominion, starring John Malkovich. Steve wrote the screenplay for Dominion, which he also produced and directed.
And, by the way, the next time you are filling up your tank at a QuickTrip or RaceTrac and someone comes up to you and ask for $5 - you will not view that person in the same way again after hearing Steve’s conversation.

Can there be a better guide than Apple’s own manuals for FCP, Motion, and Logic? Yes indeed! I’m going to tell you about an incredible set of “graphically enhanced manuals" from musician, composer, author, and CEO of DingDing Music, Inc. - Edgar Rothermich.
Apple made a huge splash earlier this week at WWDC 2017. Not only did Apple demonstrate solid software updates to iOS and macOS, they announced a huge round of hardware updates including the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, iMacs, and now the iMac Pro, along with hints of a modular Mac Pro. That should make a bunch of creative pros happy! Or, you would think!
Cinematographer and photographer Rick Delgado checks in with me after just returning from Cancun where he worked on a commercial shoot for Nickelodeon. He also tells me about his impressions and thoughts about NAB 2017, and he answers the question “do real pros use autofocus.” His answer may surprise you!

Creating Camelot: The Kennedy Photography of Jacques Lowe showcases more than 70 intimate photographs and iconic images of President John F. Kennedy, his wife, Jacqueline, and their children, Caroline and John Jr. — photos that helped create the legend of the Kennedy presidency known as “Camelot” — by Jacques Lowe, Kennedy’s personal photographer from 1958 through his early years in the White House.

Dave Bias continues in part 2 of this interview by telling the fascinating story of how co-founders Nicola Baldini and Marco Pagni teamed together to resurrect Ferrania as FILM Ferrania to bring back analog film production. Dave talks about FILM Ferrania's successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed them to invest in the future of analog film.
However, as with any good story adversity lurks around the corner threatening the protagonist’s journey. Dave tells us that proved true with FILM Ferrania. They suffered a major setback in refurbishing the manufacturing facility that caused them to have to delay the release of a new color reversal film originally promised as a reward to their Kickstarter supporters. Meanwhile, the FILM Ferrania team found an old hand written note in a diary that turned out to be the formula and manufacturing instructions of a gorgeous, silver-packed, black and white cinema film stock that is the stuff of legends: P30. Producing the first batches of P30 proved to be a good learning step in developing and fine turning the machinery and processes for eventually making color reversal film.
Dave Bias' gripping and inspiring account of the extraordinary story of the resurgence of analog film is a story that has only just begun.

To call Dave Bias a creative is too limiting. He is a story teller, a entrepreneur, a photographer, a graphic designer, and much more – a 21st century polymath. Dave's journey begins in a small West Virginia town as vinyl record shop owner. A love of folding cameras (such as the pre-World War II Voigtländer Bessa) and a chance encounter with a rented Hasselblad leads Dave into the world of photography. When Polaroid stopped making instant film, Dave took on what to some may have seemed to be a quixotic quest to save Polaroid. That led to his work with Impossible Project. And from there, Dave moved on to FILM Ferrania.
Ferrania was founded in 1917 and later started manufacturing photographic and motion picture film. In 1964 they were bought by 3M and became primarily a white label film manufacturer. The near death of film photography due to the dramatic advancement of digital cameras led to Ferrania ceasing film manufacturing and finally shuttered their plant doors in 2010.
Curiously, the pulse of the apparent corpse of film photography indicated a faint heart beat that began to grow stronger and stronger. A small but passionate group of artists and photographers from around the world clamored for something more tangible and beautiful – something that only film could provide. Film was not dead!
Nicola Baldini and Marco Pagni teamed together to bring back to life Ferrania as FILM Ferrania to bring back film. They ran a successful kickstarted that ended October 2014 with 5582 backers raising $322,420.
So where does Dave Bias fit in the FILM Ferrania story? He is now spearheading the marketing and sales of FILM Ferrania film in the United States. Dave wants to ensure that the FILM Ferrania makes analog film for the next 100 years and beyond. When pre-ordering opened for the first alpha batch of P30, the servers crashed and burned. When their e-commerce store came back online, P30 sold out almost immediately. That’s truly a good problem to have!
It’s a big story that one episode cannot comfortably contain so I’ve created two episodes to tell their story. Part 1 fittingly begins with the story of Dave Bias.

The highly anticipated Panasonic GH5 has generated a soap opera of epic proportions. While an outstanding 4K video camera, the GH5's sub-par implementation of continuous autofocus and wonky image stabilization has many video pros very much consternated. In this episode I talk about these issues and give you my take on the drama surrounding the GH5.
I recently upgraded to an iPhone 7+ and it got me thinking again about something Chris Fenwick had said in an earlier episode of this podcast - back when it was known as the DCP.
