In this episode of AuPairCoffee, Clara sits down with Matea, an Austrian au pair living in Denver, Colorado. 🇦🇹✨ She shares her unique experience of living with very young host parents and caring for a baby—while the family is already expecting their next child! From adjusting to their dynamic to embracing the challenges of being an au pair in a growing household, Matea gives us a glimpse into her everyday life.
But that’s not all! Matea also answers some of the biggest questions future au pairs might have. Do you really need a car as an au pair, or can you manage without one? 🚗💭 Are all host families as wealthy as they seem on social media? 💰 And how do you actually choose the right agency? She also talks about how much her English has improved since moving to the U.S. and how taking college credits—like a course at Disney World in Orlando🎢🏰—has shaped her experience.
Beyond the au pair life, Matea dives into cultural differences, like why dinner is the biggest meal of the day in the U.S. 🍽️, the struggle of making American friends, and the surprising freedom of being 21+ in the States. She even shares the small but unexpected adjustments—like realizing you’re *allowed* to turn right at a red light! 🚦😲
And, of course, we talk about one of the most nerve-wracking moments for any au pair: those first few days with a brand-new host family. From settling in to building connections, Matea gives her best advice on making the transition smooth.
Grab your coffee, sit back, and tune in to another exciting episode of Aupaircoffee! ☕💬

In this episode of Aupaircoffee, I sit down with Laura, an au pair living in Orange County, right in the heart of the LA area. She gives us the inside scoop on what it’s really like to live in sunny Southern California—spoiler alert: it’s not exactly like „Selling Sunset“! ☀️🏡 From taking care of four host kids, including twin boys 👦👦, to being more of a driver than a babysitter 🚙💨, Laura shares how her role differs from the typical au pair experience. She also talks about why she decided to extend her stay for another nine months 📆 and what made her bond with her host family so strong.
But life in LA isn’t always glamorous. Laura opens up about experiencing wildfires 🔥, navigating difficult conversations with her host parents 🗣️, and even getting into a car accident 🚗💥.We also dive into the major differences between German and American drivers 🇩🇪🚘🇺🇸, the struggles of public transportation in the US 🚌🙃, and the reality of paying for your own gas ⛽💸 as an au pair.
Laura’s journey has been full of surprises, challenges, and incredible experiences, and she’s sharing it all in this episode. Tune in to hear about her travels ✈️, her thoughts on the Au Pair in America program 🌎, and the highs and lows of life as an au pair in one of the most famous cities in the world! 🌆💃

🌍⏳ In this episode of aupaircoffee, I chat with Valisha from the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 She was an au pair back in 2018, extended her stay, and lived in Pennsylvania and later in LA, just a 20-minute bike ride from Santa Monica! 🚴♀️🌴 After finishing university, she decided to become an au pair again in 2023 – this time in Park City, Utah. 🏔️⛷️
She absolutely loves her host family and already plans to extend again – making it a total of four years as an au pair! 🏡💛 But life in Utah isn’t just about skiing and beautiful mountains: ski passes are insanely expensive 🎿💸, and she works a lot on weekends, especially in winter. Luckily, her best friend has the same schedule, so they get through it together.
And then there’s the Mormon influence in Utah… 🧐 While her host family isn’t Mormon, she definitely notices how much religion shapes the state – for example, good luck finding coffee there! ☕️❌ (Kind of ironic for a podcast called aupaircoffee, right? 😆) We also talked about the series Secret Life of Mormon Wives– super interesting!
🎧 Grab your coffee (if you can find one in Utah 😉) and tune in!
