BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Edmund Chen, MD
Dr. Chen is a published researcher, national presenter, and Master da Vinci bariatric surgeon. He first became interested in bariatric surgery while doing metabolic research at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C., in 2008.
Dr. Chen graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University with a biology degree and earned his medical degree from Cornell University. He then devoted two years to research at Northwestern University and began his general surgical training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He graduated from the Duke University Fellowship program for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Dr. Chen is dedicated to performing safe, effective surgery that is individualized for each patient. He is known for delivering the highest level of care with compassion, dignity, and respect for the patient and their family.
He exclusively uses the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system to optimize patient outcomes. He performs ultra minimally invasive procedures, including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, LAP-BAND, duodenal switch, omega loop, mini gastric bypass, SADI-S, bariatric revisions, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and hernia repairs.

Katie is a mental health therapist in New York State that specializes in trauma. Dr. Joe Greene is a board-certified and fellowship-trained Bariatric, Robotic, and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon. He completed his residency in general surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Following residency, he was accepted for fellowship in Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. Dr. Greene currently serves as the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery and Section Chair of Bariatric Surgery at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital. Dr. Greene performs a range of bariatric operations including Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB), Single Anastomosis Duodenal Ileostomy with Sleeve (SADI-S or Loop Duodenal Switch), as well as Revision and Conversion Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Greene has extensive training and experience on the Intuitive DaVinci Surgical System for both Bariatric and General surgical procedures. Dr. Greene is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Greene has a passion for movement, which can be seen through his engagement with Peloton. Dr. Smith’s Bio
Dr. Eric Smith is a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon who has been in practice since 2006. He is the Medical Director for the Kentucky Bariatric Institute, a SRC Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, a national proctor, speaker, and teacher for Intuitive Surgical in the specialty of robotic bariatric surgery. He is board certified in bariatric and robotic surgery, member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. He is an engaged, caring and dedicated physician who has completed thousands of bariatric surgeries.
Dr. Hayek’s Bio
Kentucky Bariatric Institute (KBI) is pleased to welcome Sarah Hayek, MD, to Georgetown and central Kentucky communities. Dr. Hayek will expand the bariatric program’s availability by offering robotic bariatric surgery, as well as a number of general surgery procedures. Dr. Hayek completed medical school at Geisinger Commonwealth in Scranton, Pennsylvania and completed residency in general surgery with an additional year in surgical education research at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. She has been a practicing surgeon for over two years with experience and training in general and bariatric robotic surgeries.
