Clinical trials are the backbone of medical innovation. In order to receive funding, get FDA approval, and reach patients, accurate data is critical. With so many barriers to completing data procedures, The Hawthorne Effect Inc. recognized the numerous pitfalls and has transformed clinical trials to be more efficient, and representative, and even brought follow-up care to the patient's home. With Jodi Akin's vision and determination, they began taking innovative, accessible, and inclusive clinical trials to patients, regardless of where they live or the complexity of the trial. (Encore)

A failure analysis meeting, where 30 top surgeons came together to discuss their biggest catastrophes, was the seed that built the Jacobs Institute for Medical Innovation in Buffalo, New York. The Jacobs Institute (JI) is a multi-disciplinary vascular center that fosters collisions among professionals of different disciplines in order to develop new ideas, technologies and systems. The building itself has won numerous architectural awards and was designed to force interactions among the various specialties. You want a fancy coffee? You're gonna have to mingle to get it. If you or someone you know has had a stroke, the treatment received at the hospital was very likely developed by Dr. Nick Hopkins. He has defined neurological intervention and is redefining patient flow and even how hospitals should be built. Nick has pioneered several devices and procedures by thinking outside of the box and constantly exchanging ideas with doctors and experts from different disciplines. This was also the inspiration for The Jacobs Institute for vascular medicine which we will talk about in-depth in the next episode. In this episode, we’re talking with Dr. Hopkins about how stroke care has evolved, and the courageous, non-traditional path that he took to make it happen. (Encore)

The pandemic forced people to use telehealth — and they liked it. Now that we’ve decided to live with the pandemic, a number of states are going back to banning out-of-state doctors. Is this good because states are licensing doctors, and they should be licensed to protect the public? Or is it bad because people need access to specialists in other states? What do we do if both are true? (Encore)

When you think of innovation, Vitamin D is not necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. But meet 92-year-old Dr. Hector DeLuca. He has spent his life researching Vitamin D and he is still finding exciting new information. Dr. DeLuca is an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin where he has three buildings named after him for his immense contributions and discoveries. He has made 8 drugs during his lifetime involving vitamin D, has numerous patents, and has been nominated twice for The Nobel. He has recently received his first device patent and is currently studying the effects of UVB light therapy and its healing properties, specifically in MS patients, and also its effect on the immune system. 20-50% of all prescriptions are off-label — prescribed by doctors for conditions that the drug wasn’t approved for. Doctors don’t want to talk about off-label prescriptions because insurance companies would have an excuse not to pay for it. Are we trusting our doctors too much? Or is something more basic wrong with the system? (Encore)

Med tech companies live or die based on approvals by the FDA. Hosts John MacMahon and Sandy Miller relate from their own experiences how previous FDA management was hard to predict and decisions often seemed erratic. This led to many companies moving their testing to Europe enabling Europe to bring new medical technologies to patients much sooner than the US. But a more effective, better informed FDA has reversed this trend and the United States has risen to the top for medical device testing and treating of patients. (Encore Edition)

Patients with Glioblastoma brain tumors, require more than just brain surgery. After the procedure they have a high likelihood of recurrence at the same site of the original tumor. The standard of care to slow this recurrence is a series of in-hospital radiation treatments, limiting the patient's quality of life without providing the expectation of a cure. Enter the amazing Gamma Tile -- a collagen-based tile carrying gamma-ray emitting isotopes. Think of it as a radioactive postage stamp that surgeons can place during the initial surgery, eliminating the need for returning to the hospital as well as being more convenient and effective. A win for the patient's quality of life, reducing costs, and in the early series so far, improving survival by 7 months. Joining us to discuss this amazing advancement is Matthew Likens, CEO of GT Medical. Matt shares the success story of Gamma Tile and the struggles in bringing a new product to market during a pandemic. (Encore)

Car T-cells are a type of white blood cell that scientists are trying to manipulate to empower the immune system in the fight against cancer, but clinical trials typically rely on the most willing population — white males, who aren’t representative of anyone other than white males. So how do you broaden the trial population to be more representative? It ain’t easy. (Encore)

After observing numerous brain surgeries, Kate Rosenbluth asked a question to a group of neurosurgeons. When their response was, I can't believe we didn't think of that, she knew that she was onto something. Her device, the Cala Trio, is a new, non-invasive option for essential tremor. Until now, the only other options were prescription medicine or brain surgery. Follow us on Kate's journey along with CEO of Cala Health, Renee Ryan, who immediately understood Kate's vision and pushed her to start the company shortly after delivering her second child. Electricity as medicine is not a new concept but the places that Cala Health is taking it is radically new -- and quite stimulating! (sorry). ENCORE

Lab Before Slab is the mini-pod companion to the Before We Die Podcast. These are the conversations that happen around our virtual production table when we should be doing other things. But often, these seemingly random conversations lead to interesting thoughts and topics and we wished that we recorded them. One day we did and thus, the Lab Before Slab mini-pod emerged.
Join us as Sandy Miller, John MacMahon, Craig Ullman and Joey Brenneman geek out about happenings in the med-tech world. You never know where the Lab Before Slab conversation is gonna go!
Often fascinating, always a little bit quirky, Lab before Slab is a bite-sized episode that drops between the full length Before We Die interviews.

Scientists at Baylor and Stanford are researching a simple protein that may be able to reduce your caloric intake. John objects and blames the patients. The other hosts are the patients and object to John. Sandy plays the electric bike card. Craig accuses John of having a romantic notion of neurochemistry, which leads, of course, to bears.

As a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Paul Yock wanted to find a way pay it forward. Stanford BioDesign is the result of that vision. Along with our very own Sandra Miller, they created a program that brought together problem solvers from different fields and taught them how to form cross-discipline teams identifying and solving patients' needs. The program's inception tapped into the substantial resources of Stanford and the Silicon Valley medTech community to support emerging med-tech innovators. Entering its third decade, the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, as it is now known, has generated medical technologies and inspired similar training programs in over 17 countries. The question that drove the biodesign program was, "Can innovation be taught?" And the answer is a resounding YES! The center has reached over 7.6 million patients (and counting) with technologies initiated by trainees in the program.
