He is ranked #1 among agricultural scientists globally, with a high impact in his field, reflected in his inclusion in the World's Most Influential Scientific Minds list and the Highly Cited Researchers list by Clarivate/Thomson Reuters. Throughout his illustrious career, he has held several influential roles, including Senior Professor at the University of Delhi, Director of the National Institute of Plant Genome Research in New Delhi, and even took on the responsibilities of Executive Director at the National Agri-food Biotechnology Institute in Mohali. What truly sets him apart is his groundbreaking work in genomics and biotechnology. He led the charge in India's first successful initiative for genome-wide sequencing in crops like rice, tomato, and desi chickpea, paving the way for high-throughput genomics in the country.His research has focused on understanding the intricate mechanisms of gene families, shedding light on the evolution of genes and their functions. He's made significant contributions in areas such as water-deficit response and grain development in rice, essential for crop improvement and food security.Beyond his research, he is deeply committed to nurturing future leaders and institutions in the field of science and education. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including the JC Bose National Fellowship Award, the National Bioscience Award, the NASI-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award, the GM Modi Award for Innovative Science & Technology, the Bhasin Award for Science and Technology, the BP Pal Memorial Award, and the Birbal Sahni Medal, among others. He is not only a recipient of these accolades but also a Fellow of several national science academies, including FNA, FASc, FNASc, FNAAS, and The World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS).
