  • In this episode of Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I have the chance to sit back and talk with Justinas Leveika. A Lithuanian cyclist living in Norway, Justinas shares about his experience participating in and setting a new fastest known time (FKT) for the Bikepacking Triple Crown. Justinas talks about his background as a nurse who moved to Norway for work and details his journey into cycling, beginning with his childhood in Lithuania.

Justinas discusses the unique challenges and experiences of the three major races that make up the Triple Crown: the Tour Divide, the Colorado Trail Race, and the Arizona Trail Race. He highlights the technical difficulties, varying climates, and the physical and mental endurance required for each race. Justinas also recounts his strategies, including the importance of comfort for speed, his use of full suspension bikes, and the significance of proper gear and training. Throughout the conversation, he touches on the camaraderie within the bikepacking community, the challenges of self-supported races, and his hopes for the future. Despite some setbacks and controversies, Justinas's story is one of resilience and passion for the sport.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, Dominick Menard stopped over on the way to a gravel race in the region. We spent a couple hours talking about his journey towards Bikepacking. Having grown up as a competitive mountain biker and working his way up to riding on the pro circuit, Dominick has a ton of biking experience. Not too long after diving headfirst into the nomadic lifestyle of van-life, Dominick got the crazy idea to start a YouTube series called Bon Velo, geared at sharing the amazing MTBing of Quebec with everyone online. After two seasons of doing this his call to adventure was getting louder and, on a whim, he decided he would cycle to Patagonia. Throughout our conversation, we went deep into his journey south, talking extensively on gear, bikes, mindset, and much, much more.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventure Podcast, Carl Presseault dropped by to talk bikes with me. We talked about our successes and failures with regards to bikepacking throughout the summer, the joy of commuting by e-bikes and the challenges associated with that. Carl spoke on the growing subculture of basket-packing and what are the advantages of using a basket for adventuring. We talked about various bike bags we are using, and so much more I can't remember off the top of my head. The cover photo is a throwback to our first bikepacking adventure in the spring of 2021.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I had the opportunity to chat with Oscar Donovan before he takes on a cargo-bike adventure around Pakistan. Having already bikepacked in over 30 countries, Oscar is pretty experienced when it comes to bicycle adventures in other countries. As with so many others, Oscar's initial goal of cycling around the world was thwarted by COVID. In the time since, Oscar has cycled large parts of Africa and is now planning on cycling around the world with his cargo bike, aiming to be the first person to complete do so. Lastly, I thought it was very cool that he sometimes creates his own music for his videos, which I am sure is no small feat. We had a great chat about all things bikes.

  • In episode 200 of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I decided to do something a little bit different so as to celebrate this milestone episode. I reached out to all the past guests on the podcast to ask them for updates on what adventures they have been on in the time since they came on the podcast, as well as any major new adventures they have planned for the future. I'm so stoked to see so many past guests respond with voice memos letting me know how things have been going since they were on the podcast. I wish I had the time to record follow-up podcasts with each and every one of them as I'm sure they have amazing stories to share, but alas, this isn't possible. Ultimately, I really enjoyed hearing from them and hope that you also enjoy this episode, particularly as it took an unbelievable amount of time to put together.

Thank you to all the listeners that have helped support the podcast over the years. It certainly wouldn't have been possible to keep this project going for so long without the constant support that has come my way. Here's to 200 more episodes, more awesome interviews, more new friends, and of course, more adventures.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I have the chance to sit back and talk adventuring with Kari Toftesund and Jonathan Labarre. As a trained psychotherapist with a passion for travel and learning about different cultures, it was a logical progression for Kari to combine adventure with mental and physical performance. Jonathan has been fortunate to develop many of the skills necessary for adventure success throughout his career in the army, sport shop management, firefighting and fire and first aid instruction.

Together, their mission as outdoor enthusiasts is to protect and preserve our planet as best they can. The climate and landscapes are changing quickly, and they feel it is their duty to take action by raising awareness about environmental issues, promoting and values of outdoor adventures, and by fostering the desire in others to spend more time outdoors.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I take listeners through my outing on the Canadian Shield XL, a nearly 1200km bikepacking route in Quebec, Canada, which takes riders on an adventure across the Laurentian Mountains, crossing through a mix of ski resorts, provincial parks, national parks, fauna reserves. Mixing in as much single-track mountain biking as possible, this route contains about 14000 metres of elevation gain according to RideWithGPS, but in reality, it is probably closer to 18000 metres. Throughout this episode I dive into my packing and bike set up, my daily distances while riding, challenges I came across along the way, and also talked about planned and unplanned changes I made to the route along the way.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I catch up with Meaghan Hackinen, the first woman across the line in the 2024 Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race (7th overall), becoming the first woman to complete the Tour Divide Grand Depart event under 16 days, with a finishing time of 15d 23h 00m.

Meaghan Hackinen is a British Columbia-based ultra-cyclist, bikepacker, and writer whose two-wheeled adventures have taken her from Haida Gwaii to Mexico’s high plateaus, across Canada and the United States, and from North Cape to Tarifa along some of Europe’s highest paved roads. She is a multi-faceted rider with a dozen women’s wins, several FKTs, as well as the course record at the World 24-Hour Time Trial Championships. Meaghan has an MFA in Creative Writing and is the author of South Away: The Pacific Coast on Two Wheels, a Kobo Emerging Writing Prize nominee, and Shifting Gears: Coast to Coast on the Trans Am Bike Race. She was the overall winner of the 2021 BC Epic 1000, 2023 Buckshot and Lost Elephant. In 2024, Meaghan was the first woman across the line in the Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race, Ozark Gravel Doom (3rd overall) and Buckshot (8th overall).

I first got to know Meaghan when she was on the podcast in episode 120, was back in 2021. Meaghan was also the keynote speaker at the inaugural Canadian Shield Bikepacking Summit in 2023 and I was fortunate to host her for the month she spent in the region while getting out on some bikepacking adventures. It was awesome to follow her on this journey along the Tour Divide, not just as a dot watcher, but also through her captivating social media posts that allowed us a glimpse into her days on the bike.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I have the chance to go deep with Henry Do about his journey into bikepack racing. I first met Henry this past winter at the Wendigo Fatbike Ultra, a 200km rail-trail bike race. Needless to say, he beat me by about 6 hours. The morning after, we got to talking and I realized that I really need to get Henry on the podcast to share his journey. Of course, it's difficult to go deep into all the various accomplishments in just one podcast episode, and we only just briefly covered the fact that Henry was the only participant at the Grand Depart of the inaugural Trans-Canada Bike Race in 2022, completing the event in 62 days. Only one other person has completed the event and that was Chris Bennett, who I had on the podcast way back in episode 35 in 2019, which goes to show just how tough it must have been. From triathlon to ironman, bike racing, bike touring and endurance racing, this conversation runs the gamut.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I catch up with Indiana Schulz, while he is taking a few days off in Anchorage, Alaska after starting his 7 years around the world Cycling Kindness Adventure on May 15th. Indiana's journey into bikepacking began in the mid-2010s and in that time he has competed in and completed some of the toughest bikepacking races in the United States, including the Bikepacking Triple Crown, which refers to the completion of all three classic dirt bikepacking routes in the USA: the Arizona Trail Race, Great Divide Mountain Bike Race, and the Colorado Trail Race. On the tail end of these adventures, Indiana decided to follow his passion and to go on a multi-year bikepacking trip around the world so as to share his most valuable resource with the people he meets along the way: kindness. I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you happen to live in the general area of where Indiana will be cycling, don't hesitate to reach out and take some time to ride bikes with him.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I chat with Fred Chagnon about a cycling specific sport that is fairly new to me: randonneuring. Fred got started in Randonneuring during the pandemic 4 years ago and is now wholly invested and wants to promote the growth of the sport, for a variety of reasons which we will discuss today. In many ways Randonneuring isn't so different from bikepacking, and in today's discussion, Fred and I share our insights into our respective worlds. Not surprisingly, the two sports have a lot in common and can actually work together quite well as a means of training.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I'm thrilled to be recording an in-person podcast episode while sitting in the podcast studio I build in my garage. Sometimes things just work out and this happened to be the case with Boban Chaldovich, a Montreal based bikepacker with nearly 30 years' experience of bike travel. It just so happened that Boban was cycling home from Toronto, after a 6500km bikepacking trip in the Balkans, Colombia and Mexico. Having cycled over 100,000km since the mid-90's it was really exciting to have a chance to sit back, hear about some of his early travels, talk bikes and even pause the episode mid-way through just so I could go look at his setup once again. I hope you all enjoy listening to this episode as much as I did recording it.

  • In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures Podcast, I talk with Mat and Ali about their upcoming plan to cycle across Canada following the Great Northern Bikepacking Route. Mat and Ali both found themselves living in British Columbia, enjoying the outdoors in every which way. Ali was a seasoned mountain biker when she met Mat and learned about his passion for bike travel. It wasn't long before she caught the proverbial bug and joined him on a cross-Canada adventure. Last year while taking on the Eastern Divide Trail, they joked about riding the Great Northern Bikepacking Route, the longest point to point bikepacking route in the world, coming in at just under 15000km. Less than a year later, here they are, preparing to take on their longest and grandest adventure yet. I should warn you that there was some clicking sounds coming through in the recording and that we had to re-record the second half of the interview in order to get it done right. Thanks again for your time.
