She joins us to discuss her memoir, The Manicurist's Daughter, that takes you through her life as the daughter of immigrants who loses her mother at a young age due to a botched tummy tuck. This amazing conversation covers everything from generational trauma to stand-up comedy, and channeling spirits to a love letter to Sizzler. A big thanks to Susan for teaching us how to live like we're mortal, and make peace with our belly fat! Now, who's down for some Sizzler?

The Bay List is official, ya'll! And you've come to the right place to find out all about it (how it was conceived, how it was formed, who it will help, and how it will work). We sit down with writer/director/actor (and one of our favorite return guests) Rafael Casal, and film and tv producer (and creator of the original Black List), Franklin Leonard, while at a Screenwriter's Salon event in Berkeley a few months ago. And now that it's live, we can finally share how excited we are for this opportunity for writers and creative folks in the Bay Area!

Not only will you hear how Rafa and Franklin first met and how the Bay List came to be, but you'll get some screenwriting tips, hear their thoughts on what has happened to the industry since last year's strike, learn how Rafa became obsessed with horses, and find out which movie from the 90s Franklin thinks never got the respect it deserves (and the non-surprising reason why).

Holy shit, this movie is crazy! It's What's Inside (streaming now on Netflix) takes place during a pre-wedding party when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens old demons, desires, and secrets from the past. We were joined virtually by two of the film's stars, Reina Hardesty and Nina Bloomgarden, for a lively conversation about the affects of social media, the challenge of one actor playing multiple characters, and what it would be like to have a penis.

From the Olympics (and a certain pole vaulting video that we may or may not be watching regularly), to Outside Lands (Grace Jones AND Chappell Roan?!?) and the Democratic National Convention (“…from the windoooows to the Walzzzz…”), these bitches needed to float on the river just to recover from all the excitement. We're talking about one of our favorite movies of the year with director/writer Sean Wang and actor Joan Chen! DÌDI (弟弟) follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy during the last month of summer before high school begins, as he learns to skate, flirt, and love his mom. We get behind the scenes details of the first (and most intense) scene with Joan and lead actor Izaac Wang, learn why playing this role was both cathartic and redemptive for Joan, and how Sean believes the best part of filmmaking makes him a better person. Then we cap it off by celebrating both the diversity of Fremont, California (where the film is set), and the magic (and longevity) of Golfland.

This is one of our favorite movies of the year, and the interview was equally as satisfying! We sat down with director Greg Kwedar, and actors Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and Sean San Jose to discuss their beautiful film, Sing Sing. The film is based on the real life RTA (Rehabilitation Through the Arts) program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, centered around a group of inmates involved in the theater program. They share how they created a special brotherhood behind the camera, why comedy was an important aspect to the story, their emotional in person screening at Sing Sing, and Divine Eye's surprising dream role for the future.

We're excited to share our first official coverage of the Tribeca Festival! (virtually through Zoom, but it still counts!)

We kick things off with the documentary New Wave, which follows director Elizabeth Ai on a mission to share the untold story of rebellious punks in the '80s Vietnamese new wave community, but in the process, ends up facing her own haunting past. Director Elizabeth Ai and producer Rachel Sine reflect on how the film took a turn on an unexpected emotional roller coaster, the importance of archival footage (and their creative way of collecting it), the importance of discussing mental health in the AAPI community, and getting Simu Liu on board as Executive Producer.

Next, we discuss the short film A Family Guide to Hunting, about a daughter who takes her uptight Korean-American parents and All-American boyfriend on a bonding hunting trip, where things turn from bad to grisly. Director/writer/producer Zao Wang and producers Joyce Liu-Countryman and Louise Barretto join us to share the behind the scenes logistical complications (ie: snow in LA?!?), why Margaret Cho was the only person who could play the role of the mother, and the special brand of love that is unique to immigrant families.

We are beyond excited that this documentary is out in theaters, because it is an event that we all should have grown up hearing about! COPA 71 shares the erased history of the 1971 Women's World Cup (more than 20 years prior to the first FIFA sponsored Women's World Cup), which was held in Mexico City and attended by more than 100,000 fans.

Director Rachel Ramsay joins us via zoom to explain her shock in finding out about this massive event that has been purposefully wiped from history, the extensive search for archival footage that continued until two weeks before they finished the movie, the emotional impact of the story, and getting major players like Alex Morgan, Brandi Chastain, and Venus and Serena Williams on board.
