  • Antonia Whillans is making her mark as an actor, voice-over artist, and model, while also passionately championing causes as an activist. Her commitment extends to animal rights, human rights, and veganism, considering it a moral imperative to confront oppression and advocate for a world imbued with compassion and kindness towards all living beings. Antonia takes pride in being a prominent face of Vegan Happy, a brand that embodies genuine ethics—promoting kindness to animals, people, and the planet. Her commitment to raising awareness took a daring turn as she participated in a bold stunt outside Tate Liverpool with the organization Speciesism. Braving freezing temperatures of -3 degrees, she portrayed a human woman being milked, shedding light on the harsh realities of the dairy industry. The stunt garnered substantial attention from media outlets such as The Save Movement, Plantbased News, Vegan FTA UK & Spain, and Liverpool World, ensuring widespread coverage of the impactful demonstration.

Antonia further lent her voice to the award-winning documentary 'When Pigs Escape,' narrating the compelling story of Matilda, a pig who defied slaughter, gave birth in a woodland, and eventually found sanctuary amidst public outcry. Currently involved in another documentary titled 'Food for Thought,' focusing on Veganism and currently in post-production, Antonia continues to utilize her platform to shed light on crucial issues.

Notably, during London Fashion Week, Antonia graced the runway in vegan cactus leather and gender-neutral footwear designed by Sophie Park, a graduate of the Jimmy Choo Academy, exemplifying her commitment to promoting ethical and sustainable fashion choices.

In this conversation, Lorri and Jim discuss various topics related to veganism and activism. They explore the dilemma of vegan fashion and the need for ethical processes in the industry. They also discuss the importance of using the word 'vegan' and taking action as a vegan. The challenge of "surface vegans" and the need for collaboration and collective impact are also addressed. They highlight the importance of finding common ground and overcoming conflict, as well as the interconnectedness of various issues. Finally, they provide information on where to find more resources and information.

    Takeaways

The fashion industry faces a dilemma regarding vegan fashion, as it may be vegan but not necessarily ethical. There is a need to consider the entire ethical process of how products are made and consumed. Using the word 'vegan' is important to negate negative associations and promote a modern and inclusive image of veganism. Veganism is not just about dietary choices, but also about taking action and making a positive impact in various ways. There is a need to go beyond surface-level veganism and actively support animal shelters and other activism efforts. Collaboration and collective impact are crucial in creating meaningful change. Finding common ground and overcoming conflict is essential for progress. Issues such as veganism, animal rights, and the patriarchy are interconnected and should be addressed holistically. • Kellogg’s Cornflakes, HUEL shakes, Marmite, Cow & Gate baby formula, Tesco’s plain flour, Soreen Bars, Sainsbury’s Orange Juice, Oatly Oat Milk, Nutri-Grain Bars, Slimfast

All of these products have one thing in common. They contain synthetic (not natural) vitamins and minerals.

What are the synthetic vitamins made of? Do they work like natural vitamins? Are there negative side effects? The clinically proven answers to these questions might surprise you.

With ÂŁ500k of UK government funding - one startup, BIOVIT, and a team of scientists are comparing the effects of synthetic vs plant-derived nutrients. Synthetic nutrients, that are in all fortified foods, which over 80% of us consume daily, have been shown to have limited to no effect, and in some cases increase cancer risk.

Recent article in ‘Food Navigator’ here

The fall out of this could have major impacts on food labelling, nutrition guidance, human health, and food production sustainability. With Governments globally being lobbied by companies such as Safe Food Advocacy Europe on broader use of synthetic ingredients, it’s only a matter of time before all certified natural and plant based foods are banned from using synthetic nutrients for good. SAFE’s campaign here.

The vitamins lurking in your everyday corn flakes are not the wholesome nutrients nature intended, instead, they are lab-made vitamin analogues, often made using unsettling ingredients such as coal tar, cattle brains, and a cocktail of harmful chemicals. These artificial impostors, known as 'synthetic nutrients,' are not identical to natural nutrients. They are missing essential enzymes and cofactors required for absorption and use by the body, and there is a growing body of clinical research that indicates they do not work and may even increase the risk of cancer.

Highly regarded website Healthline outlines key differences between synthetic and natural nutrients, and lists a large body of evidence showing adverse health effects. “Synthetic nutrients from supplements and fortified foods may have deleterious effects on health, especially when used in high doses”

BIOVIT are the UK’s leading experts in plant-derived nutrients for food. They have developed the world’s first clinically developed and tested plant-derived multinutrient blends that can replace synthetic multinutrients, for use in food manufacture. Now, alongside Professor Richard Bracken and his team at Swansea University, they are conducting first-of-its-kind research into the bioavailability and efficacy of plant-derived vs synthetic nutrients.

Ex-CEO of the ‘Vegan Friendly’ certification and founder of vegan rugby club Green Gazelles Brendon Bale commented:

“Consumers of plant based and natural products value transparency and trust most of all
synthetic micronutrients are neither natural or made of plants, and so the labelling needs to declare that. It’s about health and trust”.

Ky Wright, founder of BIOVIT, suggests the shift to natural nutrients should be common sense for the food giants:

“Independent surveys have shown that over half of the public are generally unaware that foods they eat contain synthetic nutrients. They also show that a heavy majority (90%) would prefer their fortified foods to contain only natural nutrients, and 86% would pay more. There’s a massive opportunity here for food companies and consumers.”

  • You can Pre-order Ed & Natasha's amazing new book at this link https://edsbred.com/product/the-bred-book/

Originally from Kent in the UK, Ed has always worked in fine dining kitchens around the world and has been
making sourdough since 2008. Ed and Natasha moved to Canada in 2013 to snowboard for a season. They both worked
in hospitality and Ed worked in farm-to-table restaurant Alta Bistro in Whistler, BC.

While taking some shoulder-season leave and working on Vancouver Island farms in the summer of 2014, Ed started
a sourdough culture that he took with him back to Alta Bistro and implemented a bread programme for the
    restaurant.

Back in 2016, Ed rented the bistro’s kitchen once a week to make bread for his friends, who subsequently
told their friends, and before long demand had increased to a point where Ed had outgrown the equipment.
That’s when Ed and his wife, Natasha, decided to team up and start planning to open an 100% plant-based
organic sourdough bread shop in Creekside, Whistler. Natasha admired Ed’s dedication to making tasty
artisan loaves and Ed knew that Natasha’s background as an English teacher and examiner, as well as a
string of hospitality jobs over the years would come in useful for starting a food and beverage business.

Being vegan for the past five years, it was important for Ed and Natasha to bring that into their business.
They both believe that you shouldn’t make food for other people that you wouldn’t eat yourself.

The bread shop and plant-based bakery sells loaves for pick-up in-store and a selection of small baked items
and espresso based coffees are available in the bread shop. Direct-trade, Australian-inspired Vancouver roasted
smooth, rich and balanced deep chocolate syrupy sweetness and cherry-like fruitiness espresso coffees matched
with oat, almond, soy or coconut alternatives to cow’s milk.
