"Sometimes, when people have a low opinion of their own worth - or, perhaps, when they refuse responsibility for their lives - they choose a new acquaintance, of precisely the type who proved troublesome in the past. Such people don't believe that they deserve any better - so they don't go looking for it. Or, perhaps, they don't want the trouble." 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Dr. Jordan B. Peterson

LUKE 3
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, âYou brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, âWe have Abraham as our father.â For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.â 10 âWhat should we do then?â the crowd asked. 11 John answered, âAnyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.â 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. âTeacher,â they asked, âwhat should we do?â 13 âDonât collect any more than you are required to,â he told them. 14 Then some soldiers asked him, âAnd what should we do?â He replied, âDonât extort money and donât accuse people falselyâbe content with your pay.â 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, âI baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.â 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them. 19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brotherâs wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

GENESIS 50
Joseph Reassures His Brothers
15 When Josephâs brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, âWhat if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?â 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, âYour father left these instructions before he died: 17 âThis is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.â Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.â When their message came to him, Joseph wept. 18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. âWe are your slaves,â they said. 19 But Joseph said to them, âDonât be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, donât be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.â And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

GENESIS 32
Jacob Wrestles With God
22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacobâs hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, âLet me go, for it is daybreak.â
But Jacob replied, âI will not let you go unless you bless me.â 27 The man asked him, âWhat is your name?â âJacob,â he answered. 28 Then the man said, âYour name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.â 29 Jacob said, âPlease tell me your name.âBut he replied, âWhy do you ask my name?â Then he blessed him there. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, âIt is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.â 31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacobâs hip was touched near the tendon.

GENESIS 19
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 âMy lords,â he said, âplease turn aside to your servantâs house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.â âNo,â they answered, âwe will spend the night in the square.â
3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodomâboth young and oldâsurrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, âWhere are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.â
6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, âNo, my friends. Donât do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But donât do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.â 9 âGet out of our way,â they replied. âThis fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! Weâll treat you worse than them.â They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
10 But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. 12 The two men said to Lot, âDo you have anyone else hereâsons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, 13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.â
14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, âHurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!â But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. 15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, âHurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.â 16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, âFlee for your lives! Donât look back, and donât stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!â
18 But Lot said to them, âNo, my lords, please! 19 Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I canât flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and Iâll die. 20 Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to itâit is very small, isnât it? Then my life will be spared.â

"Order is not enough. You can't just be stable, and secure, and unchanging, because there are still vital and important new things to be learned. Nonetheless, chaos can be too much. You can't long tolerate being swamped and overwhelmed beyond your capacity to cope while you are learning what you still need to know. Thus, you need to place one foot in what you have mastered and understood and the other in what you are currently exploring and mastering." 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Dr. Jordan B. GENESIS 11
The Tower of Babel
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, âCome, letâs make bricks and bake them thoroughly.â They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, âCome, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.â
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, âIf as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.â 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babelâbecause there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

GENESIS 4
Cain and Abel
1 Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, âWith the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.â 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offeringâfat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, âWhy are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.â
8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, âLetâs go out to the field.â While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, âWhere is your brother Abel?â âI donât know,â he replied. âAm I my brotherâs keeper?â 10 The Lord said, âWhat have you done? Listen! Your brotherâs blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brotherâs blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.â

GENESIS 3
The Fall
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, âDid God really say, âYou must not eat from any tree in the gardenâ?â
2 The woman said to the serpent, âWe may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, âYou must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.âââ 4âYou will not certainly die,â the serpent said to the woman.
5âFor God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.â 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the Lord God called to the man, âWhere are you?â 10 He answered, âI heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.â 11 And he said, âWho told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?â 12 The man said, âThe woman you put here with meâshe gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.â
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, âWhat is this you have done?â The woman said, âThe serpent deceived me, and I ate.â

MARK 12:38-44
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
38 As he taught, Jesus said, âWatch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
40 They devour widowsâ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.â
The Widowâs Offering
41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, âTruly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everythingâall she had to live on.â

MARK 12
The Parable of the Tenants1 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: âA man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
6 âHe had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, âThey will respect my son.â 7 âBut the tenants said to one another, âThis is the heir. Come, letâs kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.â 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9 âWhat then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Havenât you read this passage of Scripture:âââThe stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 11 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyesâ ?â
12Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.
