  • How much BJJ should you train every week? Your coach says Everyday. The Pro guys train twice a day! But how much is right for you? JT likes to take things to the extreme and Joey has a more moderate approach and through their experience helping thousands of BJJ folks get stronger, more flexible and get healthy- they have discovered the sweet spot. Now winning in terms of how much you train looks different depending on your Jiu-Jitsu goals: If you are a top competitor, an experienced hobbyist or a frothy white belt. The boys discuss what each goal might require and some approaches you can take to ensure you don't crash and burn. More does not always equal better.
    There can be some diminishing returns that come from chasing the BJJ dragon, taking something beautiful and turning it into a grind which can start to eat away at other parts of your life.
    Trial and Error is huge part of learning and failing in BJJ so working out what your body and soul can tolerate is an important part of knowing yourself. But when you push the limits - You often find them!

  • Do you ask for advice from higher belts at your Academy? Maybe your friends give you advice that seems a little questionable. Either way BJJ advice is not hard to come by but how do you know what's good info and what is fake news? JT & Joey have given and received a truck load of advice over the years and not all of it was helpful. To save you time there are some ways that you can cut through the BS and save yourself years of wasted time. When you are not sure if the advice you are getting is solid there are some easy things you can do to work it out. You need to get 2nd and 3rd opinions on the same question to see if there is a pattern between them. Also asking "Why do you say this...?" Getting an understanding of why your Advisor is telling you this will give context that can help inform whether or not the advice is relevant. Another key take-away from this discussion is understanding the person you are getting the advice from- What is their Hammer? What is their strength and are they only speaking from their place of capability which is not necessarily going to work for you with your specific skill set or body type.   • Episode 346: Do you struggle to focus at BJJ Class? Do you zone out when you are at the gym? Small details can make a big difference in both lifting and rolling. Knowing when to tune in and really focus is important. In our distracted age of so much stimulus it is hard to have enough energy to lock in and pay attention. Being too comfortable, or leaving yourself too tired to dial in when your coach is explaining can leave you missing the point of the technique or drill. When it comes to the Gym it might be as simple as staring at your phone or getting distracted in a conversation may lead you not paying attention to how your body feels proprioceptively- which can lead to injury.
    Attention is a limited resource and sometimes you have more than others but knowing when to really focus will help you have a better session and get more out of your training whether you are in the weights room or on the mats rolling. Some times you are simply just trying to get your training in between business and family time but taking a beat to realise there are key moments when you need to Focus that are higher leverage than others, can help you make the most of your most important resource- your attention.

  • Episode 345: Have you ever torn your meniscus? Been told you must have surgery? Joey injured his knee while training BJJ- turns out it was a torn meniscus. He got an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan, saw his physiotherapist and while the scan didn't reveal much new info he was advised to talk to a Knee surgeon. Joey was under the impression that Surgery was unavoidable- Can a torn Meniscus heal itself?? This discussion unpacks many of the expectations, misconceptions and new approaches to medical treatment for Jiu-Jitsu folks suffering from meniscus injuries.   • Episode 344: IBJJF 2024 was a controversial championship! There was a disqualification of Tainan Dalpra against Francisco Lo which was to a questionable judgement with no bad intentions involved and the position technically not illegal but was deemed a heel hook attack. This left the Gi worlds crowd with a bad vibe. Has the rule structure started to really negatively impact the game.
    Could Heel Hooks save the Gi Game? BJJ as a body of knowledge is constantly growing and evolving with specialised techniques and strategies for both Gi and No-Gi grappling. Many of us do not want to know just how bad our injuries and accumulated damage is so we just ignore it until it's so bad we can't function. But what if it didn't have to come to this?
