On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to two recent CVCS graduates: Hayden Carlson and Andrew Johnson.
Hayden Carlson graduated from CVCS in 2023. During his senior year, Hayden was an All-CIF selection in both football and baseball. That year, he hit .355 with 33 hits, 22 runs, 18 RBI, and eight doubles on the diamond while producing 862 total yards and 10 touchdowns on the football field. CVCS baseball went 21-11 in his senior season, and he was ranked as the No. 110 overall prospect in the state of California for the class of 2023. Hayden played his Freshman year at Indiana University before transferring to Saddleback College in 2024.
Andrew Johnson graduated from CVCS in 2024. In three years on the varsity baseball team, Andrew tallied a career 1.73 ERA with 180 strikeouts in 82 innings, including a 17-strikeout no-hitter to secure the team's 14th consecutive League Campionship in April of 2024. Upon graduating, Andrew ranked as the No. 14 RHP prospect in California and the No. 48 overall prospect in the state. Andrew will start his college career at USC in 2025.

On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to Phil Shallenberger, the Head Baseball Coach at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA.
A 2010 graduate of Geneva College, Shallenberger was a four-year baseball player for the Golden Tornados splitting time between shortstop and the mound. Shallenberger was Geneva's everyday shortstop and also served as the team's closer. After finishing his time on the field, Shallenberger stayed on the bench for three years at Geneva as a graduate assistant coach.
Shallenberger then headed to Cairn University to serve as an assistant coach and resident director. After two years, he headed to Nashville and took a resident director role at Belmont University when he had the chance to work as a graduate assistant for their Division I baseball program as well. After just one year in Nashville, Shallenberger went back over to take the head coaching position at Cairn University.
With Shallenberger at the helm, Cairn earned their first-ever berth into the CSAC Tournament in 2019, advancing to the Conference Championship Series. While the Highlanders fell to national-power Keystone in the final, Shallenberger was named the Conference Coach of the Year for the Highlanders' aggressive style. Cairn was second in the country in stolen bases with 140 while also setting the program record for home runs in a season with 22.
Shallenberger spent the summer of 2020 in Savannah, Ga. with the Savannah Bananas, a top-tier collegiate summer league team that had three players drafted in the 2021 MLB draft and two other signed to professional contracts.
He joined Messiah College as the Head Baseball Coach in 2021, and has since led the Falcons to an impressive 42-19 record in conference play.

On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to two former CVCS pitchers, Sam Eichler and AJ Discenzo.
Sam went 31-7 with a 1.82 ERA and 321 strikeouts in 234 innings pitched with the Eagles, setting the school records (single season and career) for wins, strikeouts and WHIP (0.97). He was a two-time San Joaquin Triple Crown winner, a three-time First-Team All-San Joaquin selection, and voted San Joaquin League MVP in 2010 and 2012. CVCS won league championships with Sam on the mound in 2010 and 2012. Sam also tossed a no-hitter (with 18 strikeouts) on April 12, 2011 and two "one-hitters" as a senior. Sam graduated from CVCS in 2012 and went on to pitch at East Tennessee State.
AJ went 20-4 with a 2.36 ERA with 183 strikeouts in 180.2 innings at CVCS. He graduated from CVCS in 2014 and went on to pitch at Midland University. Today, AJ serves as the Head JV Baseball Coach at Capistrano Valley Christian Schools.

On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to Javier López, a catcher who spent 15 years in Major League Baseball.
Originally from Puerto Rico, López made a significant mark as one of the most skilled and powerful catchers of his time. López signed with the Atlanta Braves in 1987 and made his MLB debut in 1992. His arrival coincided with a golden era for the Braves, who dominated the National League throughout the 1990s. López quickly became a crucial member of Atlanta’s roster because of his defensive skills, powerful swing, and rapport with the Braves' legendary rotation, which included future Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz. In 1995, he became a World Series Champion after the Atlanta Braves defeated the Cleveland Indians in six games.
He was named the NLCS MVP in 1996 after batting .545 (13 for 24) with eight runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and six RBIs against the St. Louis Cardinals in the series. He also went on to be named an NL All-Star in 1997, 1998, and 2003. He also collected the Silver Slugger Award at Catcher in 2003 after he hit 43 home runs while posting a remarkable .328 batting average. 42 of those 43 home runs were hit in games where he was actually catching, which is still a record number in a single season as a catcher.
López retired in 2006 after 15 seasons in the Major Leagues. In his career, he amassed 29.7 bWAR with 1527 hits, 260 HR, 864 RBI, a .287 batting average, and an .828 OPS.

On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to Skip Schumaker, a former MLB player and manager. Skip graduated from Aliso Niguel High School before playing at UC Santa Barbara for two seasons. Schumaker's 2001 season at UCSB still ranks as one of the best in the school's history, with 100 hits in just 250 at-bats.
Schumaker was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2001 MLB Draft and spent several years going through the minor leagues. He made his Major League debut for the Cardinals in 2005 and saw regular playing time as an outfielder and second basemen with the team for many years, including the 2006 and 2011 World Championship Cardinal teams. Schumaker was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2013 season and then signed with the Cincinnati Reds for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
After retiring from playing, Skip coached in several MLB organizations, including as the first base coach and associate manager for the San Diego Padres (2018-2021), the bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals (2022), and eventually the manager of the Miami Marlins (2023-2024). After leading the Marlins to a winning record and a trip to the playoffs, Schumaker was named the NL Manager of the year for the 2023 campaign.
Hours after recording this episode, it was announced that Skip would become a senior advisor to the front office of the Texas Rangers.

On this episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla talks to Brian Rauh. Brian is a right-handed pitcher who graduated from Laguna Hills High School in 2009 before going on to pitch at Chapman University. Over three seasons at Chapman, he posted a 1.78 ERA and a 30-1 record, recording 355 strikeouts, 13 complete games, five saves, and keeping hitters to a .170 average. During his junior year, Brian was voted Team Captain and led his team to a second place finish in the 2011 NCAA DIII College World Series.
In 2012, Brian was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 11th round of the MLB Draft. He pitched in the Minor Leagues for five years, topping out at AA Harrisburg, before a string of injuries forced an early retirement.

In this inaugural episode of the CVCS Baseball Podcast, head coach Clemente Bonilla sits down with Josh Randall, a 2021 graduate of CVCS. Josh is a right-handed pitcher who went on to play with the University of Arizona and the University of San Diego before being drafted in the 3rd round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers.
