In this episode, I sat down with John Rapley, who co-wrote âWhy Empires Fall.â The conversation kicks off with a bit about how John and his co-author, Peter Heather, came up with the idea for the book. They realized that even though they came from different academic backgrounds, they had similar ideas about how empires rise and collapseâwhether weâre talking about ancient Rome or todayâs Western world led by the US.
John explains that empires get rich and powerful by exploiting their âperipheriesâ (i.e., colonies or less developed countries). But over time, those peripheries grow stronger and can eventually challenge the empireâs dominance. In Romeâs day, this happened with actual invasions, but now itâs more about economic competition and shifting global power.
They talk about how the Western world isnât necessarily doomed to collapse like Rome did, mainly because of technology and ongoing economic growth. However, if Western countries make poor policy choicesâlike trying to recreate past âgreatnessâ without adapting to new realitiesâthey could end up in serious decline, both relative to other countries and in real terms.

In this video, I spoke to people at the farmers protest in London, where thousands of farmers are taking a stand against the proposed inheritance tax reforms announced in the Autumn Budget 2024 by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. Starting in April 2026, farms valued at over £1 million will face a 20% inheritance tax, a significant change from previous policies that exempted most family farms.
đą Why Are Farmers Protesting?
On November 19, 2024, over 20,000 farmers gathered at Parliament Square in London, organized by the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and other agricultural bodies. Farmers fear these tax changes will force them to sell parts of their land, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the future of family-run farms.
đ Key Voices from the Protest
Notable voices like Jeremy Clarkson have described these tax reforms as a "hammer blow" to British agriculture. But beyond celebrity soundbites, real farmers argue that while their land may hold paper value, their incomes are modest, making it difficult to shoulder these new tax burdens.
đ The Bigger Picture
The farming community is already grappling with post-Brexit trade uncertainty, rising operational costs, and climate change challenges. The added inheritance tax could push more farms into corporate ownership or tax shelters, leading to less land used for productive farming and a greater reliance on imported food.
