As early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fled persecution in the mid-1800s and settled in the Salt Lake Valley, they put a printing press in a wagon and moved it across the United States â publishing the first edition of the Deseret News on June 15, 1850. The legacy of that newspaper continues today with editors and writers who still work to spread light and truth around the world on Deseret.com.

In an inspired effort to shepherd the growth and future of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines, then-Elder Dallin H. Oaks was assigned by President Gordon B. Hinckley to serve as area president in the nation from 2002 to 2004. With his wife, Sister Kristen M. Oaks, President Oaks â now first counselor in the First Presidency â served in the country when there were 600,000 Latter-day Saints and one temple.
President and Sister Oaks will now return to the Philippines, where President Oaks will dedicate the Urdaneta Philippines Temple on April 28, 2024. The Urdaneta temple is the third temple in the Philippines, where there are now 900,000 Latter-day Saints and 10 additional temples in planning or construction. They share their feelings for the Philippines and discuss the blessings of the Church's growing number of temples worldwide.

In 1921, President David O. McKay of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met with Church members in an old chapel in Laie, Hawaii â where he witnessed many cultures worshipping together as one. There on the north shore of Oahu, President McKay saw how people can be united by the gospel of Jesus Christ. In a campus devotional at BYUâHawaii almost one year ago, BYUâHawaii President John S.K. Kauwe III spoke of President McKay's experience and of BYUâHawaii today. The Church's university in Laie continues to resemble that diverse group President McKay encountered more than a century ago, said President Kauwe. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has purchased the Kirtland Temple â the first temple built in this dispensation â from Community of Christ, leaders of both faiths announced Tuesday, March 5, 2024. This episode of the Church News podcast features Elder Kyle S. McKay, General Authority Seventy and Church historian and recorder, and historian Matt Grow, managing director of the Church History Department, discussing the historic purchase, which also included landmark buildings and other artifacts. Of the purchase, President Russell M. Nelson declared, âWe are deeply honored to assume the stewardship of these sacred places, documents and artifacts.â
The Kirtland Temple will remain a historic building and will not be converted into an operating Latter-day Saint temple, according to the question-and-answer statement released by the Church. The Kirtland Temple, as well as the other historic buildings â all in Nauvoo â closed March 5 to facilitate the transfer of ownership and will reopen to the public on March 25. âWe are deeply grateful for what [Community of Christ] has done over the decades, for well over a century, to care for the Kirtland Temple, to care for the properties in Nauvoo, to care for these manuscripts and artifacts,â said Grow.

This month is the 182nd anniversary of the organization of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the Relief Society was organized on March 17, 1842, Emma Smith said, âWe are going to do something extraordinary. ⊠We expect extraordinary occasions and pressing calls.â To commemorate the purpose and founding of the Relief Society, a worldwide Relief Society devotional will be held on Sunday, March 17. Local ward and stake Relief Societies will gather to hear a message from President Russell M. Nelson and the Relief Society general presidency.

The 2023 season for the Brigham Young University women's soccer team was unforgettable.
