In this episode, Johnnie talks to Mascha Deikova about the rapid development of AI and its potential impact on the filmmaking industry. Mascha is a filmmaker based in Austria and an active contributor to CineD. Instead of fearing AI, she chooses to understand and integrate it into her creative process. But is she right not to be afraid? Tune in to the discussion on the impact AI is having on the filmmaking industry, where they think it's leading us, and their take on the most important question - Should we be afraid of AI in filmmaking?
Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by FilmConvert. Check it out at [16:24].
Embracing AI in filmmakingIn the rapidly evolving world of technology, AI has become a hot topic, especially in creative industries like filmmaking. In this episode, Johnnie sits down with Mascha Deikova, a filmmaker based in Austria and a contributor to CineD, to explore the complex relationship between AI and the art of storytelling.
Based on recent comments we have received when writing about AI, you could say Mascha is not your typical filmmaker. She's someone who has chosen to face AI head-on rather than shy away from it. While many in the industry are concerned about the potential threats AI poses (like the loss of creative jobs or the homogenization of content), Mascha sees things a bit differently. She believes that understanding AI is key to harnessing its potential and ensuring it becomes a tool that enhances, rather than diminishes, creative expression.
Big studios vs. independent filmmakersJohnnie and Mascha delve into the various aspects of AI in filmmaking. They discuss the potential threats, but they also explore the benefits. Mascha's approach is clear: rather than fearing AI, she advocates for learning about it and finding ways to integrate it into the creative process. But what about Johnnie? Well, he seems quite relaxed since it's important to differentiate between big studios and independent filmmakers. While he also enjoys using AI tools like audio enhancement, music libraries, and such, he's not quite convinced yet that he will be out of a job anytime soon.

Tune into this week’s podcast episode where Johnnie sits down with Florian, the mastermind behind the CineD databases, to delve into the origins, development, and future plans of this invaluable resource for filmmakers. They discuss how Florian transformed a personal project into a comprehensive digital database that has become a vital tool for the filmmaking community.
This week's show sponsor is FUJIFILM - Watch this week's one-minute tip at 23:38 in the show and learn about some important qualities you should look for when choosing an on-camera monitor.
Florian shares his journey from previously working at a camera rental company, where he frequently answered customer questions about camera specs and recording times, to then creating a database, now known as the CineD Databases, that streamlined information retrieval. What began as simple printouts evolved into a robust digital resource that saves filmmakers time and frustration.
The conversation highlights the meticulous process of testing new cameras in-house, noting every recording mode and capability. Florian explains the importance of cross-referencing data from lens manufacturers and the challenges of gathering accurate information for older lenses, often requiring direct contact with retired product managers.
One of the standout features discussed is the CineD Lens Coverage Tool, which combines data from cameras and lenses to show if a lens can cover a specific sensor mode, considering potential vignetting and other issues. This tool exemplifies the Database's commitment to providing reliable and detailed information.
Looking ahead, Florian hints at future enhancements, including tools to simplify the selection of anamorphic lenses and address common user inquiries. He emphasizes the importance of user feedback in shaping the Databases. He also encourages listeners to log in and register to access certain tools, which helps us gather metrics and improve our offerings.
Stay tuned until the end for updates on the latest tools and features being developed for the CineD Databases. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to our Focus Check Podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. Enjoy the show!

Tune into this week’s podcast episode in which Nino explores the professional capabilities of iOS and iPadOS, focusing on the new iPad Pro with the M4 chip and Final Cut Pro for iPad. He also talks about a review Johnnie did on the TEAMGROUP T-CREATE CinemaPr P31 Portable SSD, and much more. Wait until the end to get more info on MZed’s Summer Sale that ends on July 4!
In the latest episode of our CineD podcast “Focus Check”, Nino discusses whether iOS and iPadOS are ready for professional use, focusing on the new iPad Pro with Apple's M4 chip and its performance with Final Cut Pro for iPad. Despite the iPad Pro's impressive hardware, such as its excellent OLED screen and innovative wireless connectivity for live streaming from iPhones, iPadOS's limitations still hinder its full potential for professional workflows.
The iPad Pro's screen quality is the best Nino has seen, and emphasizes its bright OLED display. However, he pointed out significant software limitations, like the absence of background processes and a restricted file system, which prevent the device from fully supporting professional editing and multitasking.
In the podcast, Nino also reviewed industry updates, including the DaVinci Resolve 19 public beta. This update features live sync from cameras, allowing editors to work on footage while it’s being recorded, thus streamlining workflows using Blackmagic Cloud.
Additionally, as you may know, we enjoy reviewing filmmaking tools for you - this week, Johnnie put the TEAMGROUP T-CREATE CinemaPr P31 Portable SSD to the test. Also, Nino talks about the Ignite DGX’s control deck for DJI transmission, which enhances camera operator control.
FUJIFILM announced firmware updates for several cameras, adding new film simulations and improving functionality, showing their ongoing support for existing products.
Stay tuned until the end to learn about big discounts on MZed’s educational content, especially the DaVinci Resolve 18.5 course that offers comprehensive training for aspiring filmmakers.
