  • Kit Marie and Katie Hall enjoy some Yorkshire Tea and chat about accents, using GIS to enhance access to nature, archaeology, table-top role play games, and more!

Katie rambled their way into a career with GIS via archaeology and geography teaching! Katie stills look at their feet when they are out field walking as grubbing in the dirt turns out to be a hard habit to break. But mostly these days Katie work indoors, either at their desk making resources for teachers looking to bring GIS into their curriculum, or out and about working with teachers to do the same! Katie loves their job but does try and make time outside of being 50% of the EsriUK school's team to run about a bit, walk their lovely greyhound Esker, and parent their rambunctious little one!

After doing an MSci in physics with astrophysics in Bristol, Regan worked in finance for a couple of years. But they returned to academia in 2021, looking at the so-called “stratospheric pathway” and its far-flung influences on mid-latitude climate and weather extremes for their PhD. • It's the 100th episode (well, technically, the 100th upload!) of the Coffee & Geography podcast! We've been on an incredible journey, with Kit Marie speaking to over 100 people from over 22 countries.

The weekend of the 100th release coincided with the weekend after the Geographical Association Annual Conference 2024, so Kit Marie took the opportunity to grab as many previous podcast guests, in person, for a quick chat and a 'We are all Geographers' baton chain! Kit Marie also gives their introspective thoughts on the milestone.

  • Kit Marie and Ayesha Tandon brew up a hot drink and chat about the social factors that impact migration, culture and identity through food, early careers and diverse voices in science, climate journalism, being sporty in a sporty family, and more!

Science journalist at Carbon Brief. Ayesha is the 3rd generation of woman to study physics in her family. But the first person in 3 generations not to get a PhD! Stepping away from research (with full support from my family) was a big decision for Ayesha, but definitely the right one. Her work in climate science communication is a much better fit! As well as writing, Ayesha am super lucky that I get to go to conferences, meet cool scientists, and even did some fieldwork in Thailand last year. She has also worked on improving global south representation in climate journalism.

  • Kit Marie is joined by Sam and Simon Fox to chat about science communication, school trips, Essex origins, the amazing Youth STEMM Award, and more!

Dr Samantha Fox is a scientist and social entrepreneur. She spent many years hanging out with plants at The John Innes Centre, an independent, international centre of excellence in plant science, genetics and microbiology. These days she spends most of her time running the Youth STEMM Award CIC, a skills award she co-founded (with Simon), to support and inspire the next generation into Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM). She’s on a mission to make sure everyone, no matter their background, gets a chance to explore STEMM and consider if a career in STEMM could be for them.

Dr Simon Fox is currently Deputy Principal at East Norfolk Sixth Form College, and co-founder of the Youth STEMM Award CIC, a skills award to support and inspire young people into science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine. After undertaking his PhD at the John Innes Centre he trained as a teacher at UEA, has worked in 5 schools and colleges across Norfolk and been in educational leadership for over 15 years, including five as Principal of a Norfolk secondary school. He has been heavily involved in STEMM outreach throughout his career, and is a champion of increasing diversity and representation in the workforce.
