When it comes to teenagers struggling with obsessive and intrusive thoughts, talk therapy alone may not always be the best solution. In fact, it can sometimes worsen the situation by giving these thoughts more attention and importance. Merely discussing fears and concerns in a typical therapy session, without incorporating ERP therapy work, might offer temporary relief for teens, but lack the essential tools for effectively managing their condition long-term.

Studies consistently show that ERP therapy is the most effective form of treatment for OCD and severe anxiety. According to the International OCD Foundation, "Talk therapy can be helpful in many ways, but for OCD specifically, specialized [ERP] treatment is needed to get better."

With exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, your teen can gain more control over their life and overcome their OCD or severe anxiety. In this episode, WayPoint Academy Clinical Director Mark Rainsdon talk with Tiffany Herlin, LCSW, about:

Are you familiar with the incredible impact of exposure therapy for teens struggling with OCD and severe anxiety? Take a look at what some of the most influential mental health associations have to say about Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy:

“Exposure therapy has been scientifically demonstrated to be a helpful treatment or treatment component for a range of problems, including Phobias, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, [and] Generalized Anxiety Disorder.” – American Psychological Association (APA)“One effective treatment is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) known as exposure and response prevention (ERP)… The best treatment of OCD [and severe anxiety] is a combination of CBT and SSRIs, especially if [the] symptoms are severe.” – The American Psychiatric Association“Two evidence-based treatments for pediatric OCD [and severe anxiety] are SSRI medication and ERP. For some youth, the combination of the two is most helpful. [However], medication without ERP does not produce the same long-term effects as ERP or the combination.” – American Psychological Association (APA)“The most effective treatment for OCD [and severe anxiety is] a type of CBT called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which has the strongest evidence supporting its use in the treatment of OCD and anxiety. ERP and medication are considered the “first-line” treatments for OCD, [severe anxiety, and related disorders]. About 70% of people will benefit from ERP and/or medication for their OCD.” – The International OCD Foundation

Even though ERP therapy is the gold standard for treating OCD in teens, it is only used in 30% of cases to treat children with OCD and severe anxiety. Surprising, right? It seems that many therapists view ERP as just another tool in their arsenal, rather than the essential treatment it truly is. This is even true among private practitioners who claim to specialize in OCD. According to the International OCD Foundation, a major reason for this is a lack of education on ERP, with a whopping 92% of therapists in private practice reporting that they would benefit from more training.

Join Tiffany Herlin, LCSW, as she sits down with the incredible clinical director of WayPoint Academy, Mark Rainsdon, to dive deep into Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy. Discover how ERP works and the amazing impact it has on families battling OCD and severe anxiety. Trust us, you won't want to miss this life-changing conversation.
