  • After Alex Murdaugh’s banker buddy Russell Laffitte was given a new trial, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — take a look at what went into the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to vacate the conviction of Alex Murdaugh’s banker buddy Russell Laffitte and discuss what they expect to see in the future. When will Russell’s retrial be held? Will Judge Richard Gergel — whose error led to this mess — still be the judge in the case? And what does this mean for the victims?
Also on the show, the Egg Lady Juror asks the court to reconsider her request to be part of Alex’s murder conviction appeal.
Plus, Mandy, Liz and Eric start their preparations for the Lee Gilley case in Houston, Texas. Lee — who originally told police that his wife died by suicide, according to reports — has been charged with capital murder for the strangulation death of Christa Bauer Gilley, who was nine weeks pregnant at the time. This past week, we broke the news that Lee had hired Dick DeGuerin to be the lead attorney on his defense team. Dick — much like another Dick we know — has a reputation that precedes him, and not just because of his reported skills in the courtroom. Dick DeGuerin has represented the likes of David Koresh and — of all people — Robert Durst, who famously confessed to three murders during the making of the docuseries “The Jinx.”

  • On today's episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — talk about yet another piece of good news in the Mica Francis case: Her husband JP Miller’s arrest... After months of squaring off with protesters outside his (now closed) church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — and just one week after the FBI raided his house — JP Miller lost his cool in public and was arrested for third-degree assault and battery. Why? Because a woman said “Here, Kitty Kitty” to him.
Also on the show, Colleton County Sheriff’s Office loses key evidence, leading to the exoneration of Craig Lewis, a man accused of raping, beating and burning his wife to death. Was it corruption or incompetence?
Plus, all heck broke loose in the Lowcountry last week when 43 young female macaque monkeys escaped a lab right in the heart of Murdaugh Country. Monkeys, you say? Didn’t the Egg Lady Juror work on a monkey farm? She sure did. And she’s not the only Murdaugh connection to the story.

  • Talk about great timing... Just as investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and attorney Eric Bland — were getting together Friday to record, the FBI was in the middle of raiding the home of Myrtle Beach Pastor JP Miller.

Six months ago, JP’s wife, Mica Francis, was found dead in a North Carolina swamp, purportedly a victim of suicide. Since then Cup of Justice, True Sunlight Podcast and other news media have kept a steady spotlight on JP as the ugly truth emerged about what Mica’s life looked like leading up to her death. What does the FBI raid mean for JP and the accusations that he was abusing Mica through coercive control? What assumptions can we make about his future now that the FBI has made it clear that they believe there’s something to investigate? Also on today’s show, Alex Murdaugh and the Egg Lady Posse see another big loss, putting a dent in their propaganda machine as they conspire to get Alex’s murder conviction overturned. Plus, why the Menendez Brothers case is about more than who deserves parole in America. And Bowen Turner’s lawyer says he’s been rehabilitated. Can we trust that now that Bowen’s back on the streets?

  • This week on “Cup of Justice” join investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell as they sit down with former OJ Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, who is host of the “Informants: Lawyer X” podcast now on Wondery.

“Informants: Lawyer X” tells the (unbelievably wild and very true) story of an Australian defense attorney — Nicola Gobbo — who played both sides of the criminal justice system. Gobbo represented some of Melbourne’s biggest (alleged) criminals while also serving as a top informant for law enforcement. In other words, Gobbo was defending her clients while also telling on them. Mandy and Liz talk to Marcia Clark about what makes the Gobbo case so egregious and so unlike any other ethical lapses involving attorneys that we have ever seen. They also discuss the Menendez Brothers case, as well as the OJ Simpson case and how that case might have played if it happened in the age of podcasts and TikTok.

Also on the show, Mandy and Liz talk about what they’re seeing in the Christa Bauer Gilley case out of Houston, as well as thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner, who is expected to be released from prison on Halloween.

Premium Members also get a discussion on the Menendez brothers' re-sentencing and the broader implications for abuse victims.

  • Investigative journalists Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland — talk about Mandy’s wild encounter with an Uber driver who was a law enforcement officer in Marion, Kansas, and who … didn’t think the police raid on The Marion County Record and the related death of its editor’s 90-year-old mother were problematic or illegal? Good thing, quick-thinking David thought to record the conversation.
Also on the show, the Diddy case keeps getting more twisted as more victims come forward. How did it get this far without anyone stopping him? Were his lawyers complicit in the abuse? And who else was involved? It’s time to name them all and shame them all. They also touched on the importance of public trials and the role of cameras in courtrooms, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability.

  • On our 101st Cup of Justice podcast episode we tackle how the insurance and legal systems are rigged against consumers in the wake of disaster, how this benefits certain parties (like insurance companies and lawyers), and how the Murdaugh family and their associates exploited these systems for their gain. Specifically, the case of Hampton County, South Carolina, and its reputation for large settlements and verdicts, potentially due to corruption and the influence of powerful figures like the Murdaughs. It raises the question of whether the county's legal system is truly a "hellhole" for those seeking justice. We also look at the role of John Grantland, Alex Murdaugh's attorney in the Satterfield case, who admitted to smelling a trap but proceeded with the settlement anyway. It raises questions about Nautilus' actions and in the scheme - especially now that they are pursuing Alex to get their 3.8 million dollars back... about which we are skeptical to say the least.

To celebrate this special occasion, Mandy, Liz and Eric got together for a live broadcast of this 100th recording to talk about the latest in the JP Miller case — including a defamation case he filed against a Myrtle Beach paralegal, an accusation of bestiality that Horry County Police Department appears not to have investigated. Plus we'll look at the continuing lack of transparency and communication when it comes to getting law enforcement to respond about the dozens of interactions that they had with JP Miller and Mica Francis leading up to her death.
Also on the show, a look back at the most difficult and more impactful moments on Cup of Justice podcast. Premium Members get extended conversation between Mandy, Liz and Eric about Liz’s return to South Carolina and the tropical storm that hit harder than expected.

  • Cup of Justice Co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — have returned to their respective studios for the latest episode of Cup of Justice in which there was A LOT to talk about.
Over the past few weeks there have been several court filings, including in Alex Murdaugh’s murder conviction appeal. Dick Harpootlian suddenly has love for more sunlight in this case and is advocating for the South Carolina Supreme Court to unseal SLED’s investigation into Juror 785 … you know, the Egg Lady juror, who was dismissed from Alex’s jury WITHOUT objection from Dick. It’s not clear what Team Murdaugh wants the public to see, but we’re sure it’s more distraction and nonsense.
Filings in Buster Murdaugh’s defamation case accuse Buster and his attorney of misrepresenting the words of a Hampton County reporter in a Netflix documentary that aired last year. As the big name production companies fight to move Buster’s case to federal court, Buster’s team has promised to push back. Also on the show, the P Diddy case spotlights a hard truth: People knew bad things were happening, making bystanders nothing more than accomplices.

  • Investigative journalist Mandy Matney starts today's episode by sharing more on the newly announced Hulu series "untitled Murdaugh murders," starring Patricia Arquette, focusing on elevating female voices and corruption in South Carolina. So hooray for Hollywood!
Then, Journalist Eric Meyer joins Mandy Matney and attorney Eric Bland to discuss the aftermath of a controversial raid on his Marion Kansas newspaper office and his home where his 98-year-old mother died following the raid. Led by disgraced police chief Gideon Cody, the warrant search aimed to intimidate the press and silence critical voices. Meyer detailed the legal and community fallout, emphasizing the need for vigilance in protecting press freedoms.
Attorney Eric Bland, Mandy Matney, and Eric Meyer pull no punches in this jaw-dropping interview on the state of journalism, the laws that should have protected the newspaper, and the fight to get justice for his mother’s death.
The incident involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the mayor, sheriff and police chief, and was later found to be a misguided attempt to intimidate Meyer and his newspaper. The search warrant was improperly executed, and the subsequent investigation revealed significant procedural errors and potential misconduct. This is a must-listen episode that sheds light on the challenges facing small-town newspapers and independent journalists like ourselves... If you believe in freedom of the press… this episode with blow your mind… 🤯

  • Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland — have been thoroughly entertained by the latest phase of Alex Murdaugh’s over-the-top efforts to get his murder conviction reversed.
Last week the public FINALLY got to meet the Egg Lady Juror (Myra Crosby) and her sidekick Juror Z (aka Juror 630, Mandy Pearce). Both women appeared in the latest episode of the Murdaugh-friendly documentary series on Fox Nation — and Juror Z made her first (and probably last) solo appearance on Julie Grant’s “Opening Statements” on Court TV. The goal? To promote Myra’s newly released “tell-all” book and further promote the Big Lie that jury tampering occurred in Alex’s trial.
Plus, we talk about the tragic killing of Sandra Birchmore, where the FBI's involvement in investigating her death is seen as a positive shift towards victim-centered cases and holding police accountable for corruption.
Premium listeners will get an extended conversation about why Dick Harpootlian’s name is mysteriously absent from Alex’s federal appeal.

Congratulations to #COJ co-host Eric Bland for launching his own pod! • Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sat down with South Carolina Senator Katrina Shealy who — in 2012 — was elected to the all-male Senate. Yes, it was all-male. And yes, it was 2012...

For years, Sen. Shealy was either ignored by her colleagues or straight-up bullied and harassed — even evoking the infamous “Women are a lesser cut of meat” comment from another senator. Nevertheless, she got down to business and became a champion of speaking up for women and children — two populations of South Carolina citizens who went largely unnoticed by lawmakers.

In 2021, Sen. Shealy introduced a bill that would outlaw coercive control in South Carolina. The bill didn’t make it out of committee. In this episode, Sen. Shealy talked about what it’s going to take to make Mica’s Law happen.

  • Today, Cup of Justice Co-Hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — take a look at the South Carolina Supreme Court’s decision to hear Alex Murdaugh’s appeal in his quest for a new murder trial. The headlines say this is a BIG DEAL and a major win for Alex, but is that true? What does it mean that the Supreme Court is allowing him the opportunity to skip the line in his appeal? Is it a sign they’re ready to let him start over? Or is it their way of hastening the inevitable and sending Alex on his merry way to federal court?
Mandy, Liz and Eric explore the answers to those questions plus whether they think the state AG’s Office could survive a Remmer hearing in this case.
Also on the show, the Horry County Police Department and Myrtle Beach Police Department appear to be holding back in their responses to Luna Shark's Freedom of Information Act requests in the Mica Francis case. What do we think is happening here? And what legal action should be taken? Eric explains the options.
Plus, Mica Francis’ multiple calls to police in which she accused her estranged husband — Pastor JP MIller — of taking her notary public embosser and expressing fears that he was going to forge her name on documents … that was an even bigger deal than we previously thought. Premium members will get an extended conversations about our fights against corrupt agencies violating FOIA... so stay tuned on that front, we're just getting started....

  • On today's 93rd Cup of Justice episode, investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — discuss the federal government’s response to Alex Murdaugh’s effort to appeal his 40-year sentence in the financial crimes.

It seems like all the T’s were crossed and all the I’s dotted in Alex’s sentencing hearing, which means his sentence has very little chance of being overturned. So what’s going on? Is Alex Murdaugh finally preparing to turn on his team and claim ineffective assistance of counsel by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin?

Also on the show, a viral video of an alligator walking in Tropical Storm Debby on Hilton Head Island resurrects a still-unanswered question: Why is Judge Carmen Mullen still on the bench? Why have we heard nothing about the disciplinary complaints filed against her? Plus the 124-page report from the investigation into the Marion, Kansas, police raid on a small-town newspaper sets a new standard for how government agencies SHOULD be communicating with the public to help establish trust.

  • Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — give a recap of last week’s strange press conference after Myrtle Beach Pastor JP Miller settled with Mica Francis’ family in their ongoing disputes in Family and Probate courts.

Eric breaks down what the family might have given up in agreeing to drop their fight against JP getting to be personal representative of Mica’s estate … but also what they might have gained by settling now. The three also discuss how JP’s inner circle — and those still attending his church.

Are they enablers of JP’s alleged bad behavior or are they victims of coercive control? What makes them continue to stand by his side? Also on the show, a date has been set in Alex Murdaugh’s Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals hearing — where he plans to argue that Judge Richard Gergel engaged in cruel and unusual punishment by giving Alex a 40-year sentence in his financial crimes earlier this year. Plus, the 2024 Olympics and the overwhelmingly positive messaging coming from this year’s slate of top athletes.

  • On today's 91st COJ episode, Mandy and Liz sat down with Karl Stoller, whose daughter Dallas died in 2021 while awaiting justice in her 2018 sexual assault. Since her death, Dallas’ accused rapist Bowen Turner has remained in the headlines, not only for the two other rapes he’s been accused of, but for the stunning failures perpetrated by the prosecution, who seemed to readily allow a high-priced legislator-lawyer dictate the terms of Bowen’s punishment.
Also on the show, we talk about the big lie behind ankle monitors and how they do nothing but make bonds companies money while providing a false sense of security for victims.

Plus, the petty politics that comes along with speaking out against bad acts and how this pettiness continues to hold back progress.

  • Cup of Justice co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — are still reeling from JP Miller’s utterly bizarre interview on Ashleigh Banfield’s show on NewsNation late Friday night. Pastor JP appears to be on some sort of public relations tour, claiming that his lawyer told him it would help with his future defamation cases. But so far? It’s not going well — starting with his vivid descriptions of a lost spaghetti dinner. In a manic sit-down with reporter Rich McHugh filled with inconsistencies and strange logic, JP gave the world terrifying insight into behavior that Mica Francis ostensibly had to endure while married to him.
Also on the show, Alex Murdaugh is officially going back on his word by appealing his 40-year federal sentence, claiming it was cruel and unusual punishment. Plus, a discussion on Miss Kansas’ brave on-stage moment, calling out an abuser, and a call for more consequences in the Marion, Kansas, newspaper raid.

  • Cup of Justice co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — listened to Dick Harpootlian’s (ridiculously long) farewell speech in the South Carolina Senate and needless to say, they have some thoughts on it. Especially when it comes to Dick’s tone-deaf defense of his own behavior defending Alex Murdaugh.

Also on the show, several lawmakers around the country are seriously considering introducing legislation to end no-fault divorces. Mandy, Liz and Eric discuss the possible impacts that could come from that, along with how women like Mica Francis deserve BETTER divorce laws, not worse ones.

  • Cup of Justice co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Eric Bland — take a look at the lawsuit filed by Buster Murdaugh against documentary filmmakers and major networks, accusing them of defamation in their Stephen Smith reporting.

Eric gives a quick primer about what defamation is and what Buster is going to have to prove in the courtroom. Mandy and Liz talk about their observations of how the media handled the mentions of the Murdaugh name in the Smith investigation and what things looked like behind the scenes when film crews descended on the Lowcountry.

They also explore the biggest question of all: Will this case end up bringing much-needed answers in the Stephen Smith investigation?

Also on the show, what the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a firearm ban for those accused of domestic violence will do for women and why it’s so hard to get women’s stories of abuse to be taken seriously.

Premium members get an extended discussion about how law enforcement handles domestic violence calls and what needs to change.
