Luke 4: 14-22 - 'This text is being fulfilled today, even as you listen.'
Note: Some countries may have a different gospel reading at Mass today, if they celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany on Sunday rather than Monday. This podcast follows the lectionary for the General Roman Calendar.
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 1286 (in 'Confirmation in the Economy of Salvation') - In the Old Testament the prophets announced that the Spirit of the Lord would rest on the hoped-for Messiah for his saving mission (abbreviated)
- 436 (in 'Christ') - It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at once as king and priest, and also as prophet. Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet, and king (abbreviated)
- 695 (in 'Symbols of the Holy Spirit') - Its full force can be grasped only in relation to the primary anointing accomplished by the Holy Spirit, that of Jesus. Christ (in Hebrew âmessiahâ) means the one âanointedâ by Godâs Spirit. There were several anointed ones of the Lord in the Old Covenant, pre-eminently King David. But Jesus is Godâs Anointed in a unique way: the humanity the Son assumed was entirely anointed by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit established him as âChrist" (abbreviated).
- 714 (in 'Expectations of the Messiah and his spirit') - This is why Christ inaugurates the proclamation of the Good News by making his own the following passage from Isaiah: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lordâs favor.
- 544 (in 'The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God') - The kingdom belongs to the poor and lowly, which means those who have accepted it with humble hearts. Jesus is sent to âpreach good news to the poorâ (abbreviated)
- 2443 (in 'Love for the Poor') - When âthe poor have the good news preached to them,â it is the sign of Christâs presence (abbreviated)
- 1168 (in 'The Liturgical Year') - Beginning with the Easter Triduum as its source of light, the new age of the Resurrection fills the whole liturgical year with its brilliance. Gradually, on either side of this source, the year is transfigured by the liturgy. It really is a âyear of the Lordâs favor" (abbreviated)

Mark 6: 45-52 - 'His disciples saw him walking on the lake.'
Note: Some countries may have a different gospel reading at Mass today, if they celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany on Sunday rather than Monday. This podcast follows the lectionary for the General Roman Calendar.
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 2602 (in 'Jesus prays') - Jesus often draws apart to pray in solitude, on a mountain, preferably at night. He includes all men in his prayer, for he has taken on humanity in his incarnation, and he offers them to the Father when he offers himself. Jesus, the Word who has become flesh, shares by his human prayer in all that âhis brethrenâ experience; he sympathizes with their weaknesses in order to free them. It was for this that the Father sent him. His words and works are the visible manifestation of his prayer in secret.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 472 (in 'Christ's Soul and his human knowledge') - This human soul that the Son of God assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such, this knowledge could not in itself be unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of his existence in space and time. This is why the Son of God could, when he became man, âincrease in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man,â and would even have to inquire for himself about what one in the human condition can learn only from experience. This corresponded to the reality of his voluntary emptying of himself, taking âthe form of a slave.â

Matt 4: 12-17, 23-25 - 'The people that lived in darkness have seen a great light.'
Note: Some countries may have a different gospel reading at Mass today, if they celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany on Sunday rather than Monday. This podcast follows the lectionary for the General Roman Calendar.
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 1989 (in 'Justification') - The first work of the grace of the Holy Spirit is conversion, effecting justification in accordance with Jesusâ proclamation at the beginning of the Gospel: âRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.â Moved by grace, man turns toward God and away from sin, thus accepting forgiveness and righteousness from on high. âJustification is not only the remission of sins, but also the sanctification and renewal of the interior man.â
- 1503 (in 'Christ the Physician') - Christâs compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that âGod has visited his peopleâ and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of (abbreviated).
- 1720 (in 'Christian Beatitude') - The New Testament uses several expressions to characterize the beatitude to which God calls man: â the coming of the Kingdom of God; â the vision of God: âBlessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see Godâ; â entering into the joy of the Lord; â entering into Godâs rest (abbreviated).

Matthew 2: 1-12 - 'The visit of the Magi.'
Note: Some countries may have a different gospel reading at Mass today, if they celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany on a Sunday rather than today. This podcast follows the lectionary for the General Roman Calendar.
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 528 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' Infancy') - The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the world. The great feast of Epiphany celebrates the adoration of Jesus by the wise men (magi) from the East, together with his baptism in the Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. In the magi, representatives of the neighboring pagan religions, the Gospel sees the first-fruits of the nations, who welcome the good news of salvation through the Incarnation. The magiâs coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David, the one who will be king of the nations. Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and worship him as Son of God and Savior of the world only by turning toward the Jews and receiving from them the messianic promise as contained in the Old Testament. The Epiphany shows that âthe full number of the nationsâ now takes its âplace in the family of the patriarchs,â and acquires Israelitica dignitas (âthe dignity of Israelâs birthrightâ).
- 439 (in 'Christ') - Many Jews and even certain Gentiles who shared their hope recognized in Jesus the fundamental attributes of the messianic âSon of David,â promised by God to Israel (abbreviated)
- 724 (in 'Rejoice, you who are full of grace') - In Mary, the Holy Spirit manifests the Son of the Father, now become the Son of the Virgin. She is the burning bush of the definitive theophany. Filled with the Holy Spirit she makes the Word visible in the humility of his flesh. It is to the poor and the first representatives of the gentiles that she makes him known.

John 1: 1-18 - 'The Word was made flesh, and lived among us.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 454 (in 'The Only Son of God') - The title âSon of Godâ signifies the unique and eternal relationship of Jesus Christ to God his Father: he is the only Son of the Father (cf. Jn1:14,18; 3:16,18); he is God himself (cf. Jn1:1). To be a Christian, one must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (cf. Acts 8:37; 1 Jn 2:23).
- 2780 (in 'Father') - We can invoke God as âFatherâ because he is revealed to us by his Son become man and because his Spirit makes him known to us. The personal relation of the Son to the Father is something that man cannot conceive of nor the angelic powers even dimly see: and yet, the Spirit of the Son grants a participation in that very relation to us who believe that Jesus is the Christ and that we are born of God.
- 1216 (in 'The Name of the Sacrament of Baptism') - âThis bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding . . . .â Having received in Baptism the Word, âthe true light that enlightens every man,â the person baptized has been âenlightened,â he becomes a âson of light,â indeed, he becomes âlightâ himself" (abbreviated)
- 1996 (in 'Grace') - Our justification comes from the grace of God. Grace is favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life.
- 423 (in 'The Good News: God has sent his Son') - We believe and confess that Jesus of Nazareth, born a Jew of a daughter of Israel at Bethlehem at the time of King Herod the Great and the emperor Caesar Augustus, a carpenter by trade, who died crucified in Jerusalem under the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of the emperor Tiberius, is the eternal Son of God made man. He âcame from God,â âdescended from heaven,â and âcame in the flesh.â For âthe Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. . . . And from his fullness have we all received, grace upon grace.â
- 151 (in 'To Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God') - For a Christian, believing in God cannot be separated from believing in the One he sent, his âbeloved Son,â in whom the Father is âwell pleasedâ; God tells us to listen to him. The Lord himself said to his disciples: âBelieve in God, believe also in me.â We can believe in Jesus Christ because he is himself God, the Word made flesh: âNo one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.â Because he âhas seen the Father,â Jesus Christ is the only one who knows him and can reveal him.

- 612 (in 'The agony at Gethsemani')

John 1: 35-42 - 'We have found the Messiah.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 608 (in 'The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world') - After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the âLamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.â By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israelâs redemption at the first Passover. Christâs whole life expresses his mission: âto serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.â

John 1: 29-34 - 'Look: there is the lamb of God.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 408 (in 'A Hard Battle') - The consequences of original sin and of all menâs personal sins put the world as a whole in the sinful condition aptly described in St. Johnâs expression, âthe sin of the world" (abbreviated)
- 438 (in 'Christ') - His eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when âGod anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power,â âthat he might be revealed to Israel" (abbreviated)
- 486 (in 'Who Was Conceived by the Holy Spirit') - The Fatherâs only Son, conceived as man in the womb of the Virgin Mary, is âChrist,â that is to say, anointed by the Holy Spirit, from the beginning of his human existence, though the manifestation of this fact takes place only progressively: to the shepherds, to the magi, to John the Baptist, to the disciples
- 523 (in 'The Preparations') - He inaugurates the Gospel, already from his motherâs womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being âthe friend of the bridegroom,â whom he points out as âthe Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (abbreviated)
- 536 (in 'The Baptism of Jesus') - The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as Godâs suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already âthe Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.â Already he is anticipating the âbaptismâ of his bloody death. Already he is coming to âfulfill all righteousness,â that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Fatherâs will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. The Fatherâs voice responds to the Sonâs acceptance, proclaiming his entire delight in his Son. The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness from his conception comes to ârest on him.â Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind. At his baptism âthe heavens were openedââthe heavens that Adamâs sin had closedâand the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude to the new creation.
- 608 (in 'The Lamb who takes away the sin of the world') - After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the âLamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.â By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israelâs redemption at the first Passover. Christâs whole life expresses his mission: âto serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.â
- 613 (in 'Christ's death is the unique and definitive sacrifice') - Christâs death is both the Paschal sacrifice that accomplishes the definitive redemption of men, through âthe Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (abbreviated)
- 719 (in 'John, Precursor, Prophet & Baptist') - In Johnâs sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. âHe on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. . . . Behold, the Lamb of God" (abbreviated)
- 1137 (in 'The celebrants of the Heavenly liturgy')
- 1286 (in 'Confirmation in the Economy of Salvation')
- 1505 (in 'Christ the Physician')

John 1: 19-28 - 'One is coming after me who existed before me.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 575 (in 'Jesus and Israel') - Many of Jesusâ deeds and words constituted a âsign of contradiction,â but more so for the religious authorities in Jerusalem, whom the Gospel according to John often calls simply âthe Jews," than for the ordinary People of God (abbreviated).
- 719 (in 'John, precursor, prophet and baptist') - John the Baptist is âmore than a prophet.â In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the âvoiceâ of the Consoler who is coming. As the Spirit of truth will also do, John âcame to bear witness to the light.â In Johnâs sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. âHe on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God. . . . Behold, the Lamb of God.â

Luke 2: 16-21 - 'The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found the baby lying in the manger.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:- 2599 (in 'Jesus Prays') - The Son of God who became Son of the Virgin also learned to pray according to his human heart. He learns the formulas of prayer from his mother, who kept in her heart and meditated upon all the âgreat thingsâ done by the Almighty (abbreviated).
- 527 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' Infancy') - Jesusâ circumcision, on the eighth day after his birth, is the sign of his incorporation into Abrahamâs descendants, into the people of the covenant. It is the sign of his submission to the Law and his deputation to Israelâs worship, in which he will participate throughout his life. This sign prefigures that âcircumcision of Christâ which is Baptism.

Luke 2: 41-52 - 'Mary stored up all of these things in her heart.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 534 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' Hidden Life') - The finding of Jesus in the temple is the only event that breaks the silence of the Gospels about the hidden years of Jesus. Here Jesus lets us catch a glimpse of the mystery of his total consecration to a mission that flows from his divine sonship: "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's work?" Mary and Joseph did not understand these words, but they accepted them in faith. Mary "kept all these things in her heart" during the years Jesus remained hidden in the silence of an ordinary life.
- 583 (in 'Jesus and the temple') - Like the prophets before him Jesus expressed the deepest respect for the Temple in Jerusalem. It was in the Temple that Joseph and Mary presented him forty days after his birth At the age of twelve he decided to remain in the Temple to remind his parents that he must be about his Father's business (abbreviated).
- 2599 (in 'Jesus Prays') - He learns to pray in the words and rhythms of the prayer of his people, in the synagogue at Nazareth and the Temple at Jerusalem. But his prayer springs from an otherwise secret source, as he intimates at the age of twelve: "I must be in my Father's house." Here the newness of prayer in the fullness of time begins to be revealed: his filial prayer, which the Father awaits from his children, is finally going to be lived out by the only Son in his humanity, with and for men (abbreviated).
- 531 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' Hidden Life') - During the greater part of his life Jesus shared the condition of the vast majority of human beings: a daily life spent without evident greatness, a life of manual labour. His religious life was that of a Jew obedient to the law of God, a life in the community. From this whole period it is revealed to us that Jesus was "obedient" to his parents and that he "increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with God and man."
- 517 (in Characteristics common to Jesus' mysteries') - When Christ became incarnate and was made man, he recapitulated in himself the long history of mankind and procured for us a "short cut" to salvation, so that what we had lost in Adam, that is, being in the image and likeness of God, we might recover in Christ Jesus. For this reason Christ experienced all the stages of life, thereby giving communion with God to all men (abbreviated).
- 2196 (in 'The Fourth Commandment') - He was obedient to them (abbreviated).
- 472 (in 'Christ's soul and his human knowledge') - This human soul that the Son of God assumed is endowed with a true human knowledge. As such, this knowledge could not in itself be unlimited: it was exercised in the historical conditions of his existence in space and time. This is why the Son of God could, when he became man, "increase in wisdom and in stature, and in favour with God and man", and would even have to inquire for himself about what one in the human condition can learn only from experience. This corresponded to the reality of his voluntary emptying of himself, taking "the form of a slave" (abbreviated).

Matthew 2: 13-18 - 'The massacre of the innocents.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 530 (in 'The Mysteries of Jesus' Infancy') - The flight into Egypt and the massacre of the innocents make manifest the opposition of darkness to the light: âHe came to his own home, and his own people received him not.â Christâs whole life was lived under the sign of persecution. His own share it with him. Jesusâ departure from Egypt recalls the exodus and presents him as the definitive liberator of Godâs people.
- 333 (in 'Christ with all his angels') - From the Incarnation to the Ascension, the life of the Word incarnate is surrounded by the adoration and service of angels. When God âbrings the firstborn into the world, he says: âLet all Godâs angels worship him.ââ Their song of praise at the birth of Christ has not ceased resounding in the Churchâs praise: âGlory to God in the highest!â They protect Jesus in his infancy, serve him in the desert, strengthen him in his agony in the garden, when he could have been saved by them from the hands of his enemies as Israel had been (abbreviated).

John 20: 2-8 - 'The other disciple saw, and he believed.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 640 (in 'The Empty Tomb') - âWhy do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.â The first element we encounter in the framework of the Easter events is the empty tomb. In itself it is not a direct proof of Resurrection; the absence of Christâs body from the tomb could be explained otherwise. Nonetheless the empty tomb was still an essential sign for all. Its discovery by the disciples was the first step toward recognizing the very fact of the Resurrection. This was the case, first with the holy women, and then with Peter. The disciple âwhom Jesus lovedâ affirmed that when he entered the empty tomb and discovered âthe linen cloths lying there,â âhe saw and believed.â This suggests that he realized from the empty tombâs condition that the absence of Jesusâ body could not have been of human doing and that Jesus had not simply returned to earthly life as had been the case with Lazarus.
- 515 (in 'Christ's Whole Life is Mystery') - From the swaddling clothes of his birth to the vinegar of his Passion and the shroud of his Resurrection, everything in Jesusâ life was a sign of his mystery. His deeds, miracles, and words all revealed that âin him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily" (abbreviated)

Matthew 10: 17-22 - 'The Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.'
Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 728 (in 'Christ Jesus') - He also alludes to the Spirit in speaking to Nicodemus, to the Samaritan woman, and to those who take part in the feast of Tabernacles. To his disciples he speaks openly of the Spirit in connection with prayer and with the witness they will have to bear.
- 161 (in 'The Necessity of Faith') - Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation. âSince âwithout faith it is impossible to please [God]â and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life âbut he who endures to the end.ââ
- 1821 (in 'Hope') - We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere âto the endâ and to obtain the joy of heaven, as Godâs eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ (abbreviated).

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:
- 422 (in 'The Good News: God has Sent his Son") - God has visited his people. He has fulfilled the promise he made to Abraham and his descendants. He acted far beyond all expectationâhe has sent his own âbeloved Son" (abbreviated)
- 717 (in 'John, precursor, prophet and baptist') - Maryâs visitation to Elizabeth thus became a visit from God to his people (abbreviated)
- 523 (in 'The Preparations') - St. John the Baptist is the Lordâs immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way. âProphet of the Most High,â John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last (abbreviated)
- 706 (in 'The Spirit of the Promise') - Against all human hope, God promises descendants to Abraham, as the fruit of faith and of the power of the Holy Spirit. In Abrahamâs progeny all the nations of the earth will be blessed. This progeny will be Christ himself (abbreviated)
