It’s the final episode of Dear Green Place which has been collecting stories and following the activities of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice during this 40th anniversary year. Chaplain Leslie Edge talks about his role at Glasgow’s Hospice. After attending the annual Christmas Light up a Life service at St Andrew’s Cathedral Dawn Gough talks about how her husband Peter was cared for at the hospice. And Chief Executive Rhona Baillie talks about the highlights of this special year and the challenges ahead in 2024.

We’re definitely in the build up to the Christmas Season. The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice hosted their annual Christmas Fayre last Sunday. While the building was buzzing there was a quiet calmness in the inpatient unit. Dear Green Place caught up with Staff Nurse Joanne Noble during one of her shift breaks and Sheonad Laidlaw who is a Specialty Doctor in there. After the Christmas Fayre there was the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in the grounds of the hospice - each light dedicated to the memory of someone who is missed but not forgotten.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice is a beautiful award winning building. We’ve heard in previous episodes of Dear Green Place how it is like a 5 star hotel. As well as all the medical care and support that goes on at Glasgow’s Hospice there is a strong operations team keeping the place running smoothly. From the moment you are greeted as you walk through the front door by the reception team to housekeeping and maintenance it’s a constant job keeping everything running smoothly. In this episode we spend time with some of the people who work in these teams.

It was a week of celebration at the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. There was a big turn out at the Living Well Hub to go through the 1980s memory box brought along by Glasgow’s Open Museum to mark the 40th anniversary of Glasgow’s Hospice. In the middle of it all Susan Brolly who Dear Green Place spoke to in Episode 14 received her finished self illustrated poetry book. And the Young Adults we spoke to in Episode 18 launched their film and rap song We Are The Magic which they made with help from Braw Talent and Comedian, Actor and writer Karen Dunbar.

One of the important roles at the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice is to make people aware of the services provided and also to receive feedback from those who have used different services. Jacqui Fernie is the Community Engagement Officer. She tells Dear Green Place about this work and how she connects with different, sometimes hard to reach communities. Jacqui also leads the EASE online course (End of Life Skills for Everyone) which aims to help professionals and interested individuals be more comfortable and confident in talking about issues around death and dying. We also hear from psychotherapist and counsellor Tracy McHugh who talks about about how the course helped her in her work.

As the days get colder it’s a great time to meet indoors with folks for a chat. Jean McCauley is an outpatient at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice and Carol Smillie is an ambassador at Glasgow’s Hospice. We got chatting at the Eco Chic fashion event when Carol was putting us through our paces for the catwalk (episode 21). Carol Smillie used to be a model as well a TV presenter on shows such as Changing Rooms, Wheel of Fortune and the National Lottery. She is now a humanist celebrant. We arranged to meet the following week for a chat on Dear Green Place about their different experiences of being involved with the Hospice. It was a great eye opening discussion about what the hospice means to them both. And an invitation to come and visit. As part of Hospice Care Week you can pop in and find out more about the work here on Friday 13th October between 1-4pm.

It’s Autumn and you may well be looking at your wardrobe and thinking it’s time to for a change in what to wear. Early on in September The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice organised it’s first ever fashion show - Eco Chic - involving the 17 Hospice shops. It was quite an event at the House of an Art Lover just beside Glasgow’s Hospice. Dear Green Place was there along with the 17 models many donning the catwalk for the very first time with their 40 for 40 challenge. The idea being to buy a complete outfit from your local Hospice Shop for under £40 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of hospice care.

There are no limits to what you can do to raise money for The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. As Summer turns to Autumn it would seem that an adventurous spirit is around. From a night time trek up Ben Nevis, cycling across Portugal to doing an ultra race through Romania, Dear Green Place talks to some of those who are embracing the extreme ends of fundraising for Glasgow’s Hospice.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice has just opened it’s 18th shop. It’s in Battlefield in the south side of the city. It’s a bit different to the other stores. It’s been designed as a high end boutique, the shop front and signage is black and white. Dear Green Place popped out as the final touches were being put in place before the official opening and the evening when all was revealed to the local neighbourhood who were keen to find out what was on offer from Glasgow’s Hospice

It’s the 40th anniversary of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. Mary Lewis has been volunteering since the beginning. She was involved in forming one of the first committees to raise money to open Glasgow’s Hospice.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice is one of the partner charities in a brand new shopping experience for Scotland. The Charity Supermkt is a pop up shop at Glasgow’s Fort out of town shopping centre where you can get a new wardrobe and support a number of organisations. Dear Green Place popped along to meet Glasgow’s Hospice new retail ambassador Victoria Lee to get some guidance on how to shop on sustainably on a budget. Fifty thousand people took part in Glasgow’s Pride Mardi Gla on July 15th and The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice was there in the parade. CEO Rhona Baillie said it was important to take part to make the point that Glasgow’s Hospice was open to everyone. Dear Green Place kept an eye on the preparations up to Saturday’s parade. Hospice chef Stuart McKeown and his alter ego Caron Tyne in a magnificent dress led the team..

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice has an impressive display of art around the building, much of this created by people who have an association with Glasgow’s Hospice. Susan Brolly attends the Living Well Hub and with the encouragement and support from the art team has been learning the skills to illustrate one of her poems and is now fulfilling a long ambition to publish her own book. If you are a regular listener to Dear Green Place you’ll know that dogs are welcome visitors at the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, they can stay with their owners in the inpatient unit. Therapy pets also call in to the Living Well Hub and then there are the working dogs. In this week’s episode we meet Sandra Bell who brings her companion dog Bumble to Glasgow’s Hospice. The gardens at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice are glorious right now. Perfect for a stroll or for sitting a while. There are 800 volunteers involved in all aspects of life at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice. They are vital for the smooth running of Glasgow’s Hospice. Throughout this series Dear Green Place has been talking to many of the people who give some of their time, be it in the building, the community shops or at events. To mark the end of Volunteering Week in this episode we hear from Emily Carr - the Volunteer Services Manager as well as some of the volunteers in the busy Bargacree cafe and in the gardens. We also discover more about corporate volunteering - ‘out of the office today’ and helping out.

It’s a rare day you’ll be in The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice and not see a dog. Some are with their owners getting a cuppa in the #Bargacree cafe. Some are visiting patients. And then there’s the Therapy Pets!
There are quite a few who have their days for visiting Glasgow’s Hospice. Dear Green Place catches up with Bailey and Twiggy and their owner Hazel Tomkins who is also a volunteer and fundraiser. And news of a date for your diary for the Summer Fayre on 11th June.
