  • In this special episode of the Deer IQ podcast Iā€™m going to be starting a story-based series called ā€œSo there I was - hunting stories of epic adventure.ā€ This is where I will tell a story of a specific buck, and also break down how and why it worked out. Iā€™ll be inserting these here and there throughout this year. Iā€™ll also apply some of the principles weā€™ve been going over in the 6 steps or core competencies of highly effective hunters, and how those worked in this real world hunting situation. This hunt is about my 2016 Ohio 13 point, and the story is kind of wild and shows the interconnectedness of whitetail hunters - in both success and failure. And yes we have our free journal you can download below, that will really help you get the most out of this podcast. Ok so, here are the top things to look for during this episode.ā€¢ What was so disappointing about my previous season, 2015, and what can we learn from that failure?ā€¢ How did the ā€œfirst sit ruleā€ or strategic strike I talk about so much about, come into play with several bucks in this story?ā€¢ How much time passed between getting high value intel about this particular buck, and me getting the shot?ā€¢ What were key moments and decisions I made when it came to tracking and retrieving this buck that were pivotal in finding him?ā€¢ What happened when 2 other hunters who pursued this deer for 3 years found out about his demise, and the big twist here - what well known person did this wind up being?Year Theme: To consistently take the top deer where you huntSeries: So there I was..Episode # 64Guest: Host Adam LewisIQ ranking - 5 (intermediate)DEER IQ Services:  ā€¢ The NEW Deer IQ TEST & Consultation HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-assessment/ ā€¢ For interest in a Whitetail Workshop, our Coached Small Group, land and hunting plans for your private land,  or a public land hunting analysis, visit HERE: https://deeriq.com/services/  More from DEER IQ: FOUNDATIONS Episode Mentioned: https://youtu.be/NBWdFHE92lg Website: https://deeriq.com Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762 Deer IQ  FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/ Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide:  https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/ Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/ Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon Scent Control Regimen: https://deeriq.com/scentcontrol-regimen/

  • In this special episode of the Deer IQ podcast we discuss the recent Michigan regulations changes, and the DMI (Deer Management Initiative) teams & new process that helped make suggestions. • In this episode of the Deer IQ podcast we will continue to look at how to achieve our goal, or theme of this year ā€œto consistently take the top deer where you huntā€ and exact habits and systems needed to do that - two of those being scent and sound control.  Iā€™m joined by my friend Mark for this conversation on a couple foundational systems to help with that task. • This episode is our final episode of year 1 where our overarching theme was - to be a greater deer hunter. If you havenā€™t listened to all our series, I invite you to take the next few weeks to do so - we started with Barriers we need to overcome, got in the mind of mature bucks, had a deep dive into public land hunting, dissected private land strategies, dove deep into the science of deer, looked at what stewardship really is, then ended with some major controversies. But over the course of the year I asked many of our guests this one overarching question - what exactly does it take to be a great deer hunter, and this week we look at what they said. You can look back at the full episodes with those guests, Iā€™ll put those in the notes. • This episode bridges two of our series - controversies & solutions, and what it takes to be a great hunter. It does this because this episode includes both someone that many feel is one of the best whitetail hunters ever, with probably the biggest controversy ever - Mitch Rompola and his infamous 1998 buck. We cover what 3 people that knew him first hand say about that infamous deer, and also some strange hunting techniques he used. And yes, I (Adam) knocked on Mitchā€™s door in an attempt to get an interview, and will reveal what happened, and will finally answer one big question thatā€™s been floating around for years. And, to be clear,  I have utmost respect for all the guests on this episode and their takes on this topic. My "solutions" at the end are for people like me - the masses that never saw the buck, or knew Mitch. A special thanks to those guests and Dan Schmidt for letting me use the video clips. Here's what to look for: Guest 1 - John Ohmer (We are at a show for some of these, so excuse the background noise.)ā€¢ What is the exact nature of Johnā€™s relationship to Mitch, and I think itā€™s important to understand relationships as we analyze some of our interviews and keep these in mind.ā€¢ Why John says Mitch told him and some other people to stand down.ā€¢ What does John say about seeing an infamous shed (which another guest comments on later)Guest 2: Richard P. Smithā€¢ What does Richard say about the missing 30 minute video of the recovery?ā€¢  I will also include a clip of this which has circulated around a lot, and pay attention to Mitchā€™s reaction, and other various details of the video - like how the antlers and skull actually look, which is where a lot of controversy stems. Guest 3: John Eberhart (Courtesy of Deer and Deer Hunting Editor Dan Schmidt & including him in the video - see that full video here: https://youtu.be/zqafGQt1riI?si=xGjJWi9fqSl9ZmZm) ā€¢ What is John Eberhartā€™s interpretation to the SAME shed John Ohmer saw at the same show?ā€¢ What is his take on the idea that Mitch didn't want recognition?Adam Lewis:ā€¢ what myth is busted when I knocked on Mitch's door?Year Theme: To Be a Greater HunterSeries: Hunting Controversies & SolutionsEpisode # 56Guests: Host Adam Lewis, Various GuestsIQ ranking - 5 (intermediate)DEER IQ Services:ā€¢ Surgical Hunting Small Group - email Adam for interest [email protected] ā€¢ if interested in a whitetail weekend workshop, strategic land and hunting plans for your private land,  or a public land hunting analysis, visit here:  https://forms.gle/peiUQPgUWDKkGG6g7MORE DEER IQ Stuff: Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon Get started - website overview HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-overview/Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762Deer IQ  FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/Deer IQ Test: https://deeriq.com/deeriqtest/Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide:  https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/Curriculum: https://deeriq.com/curriculum/Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/

  • In this episode of the Deer IQ podcast we are in our series - hunting controversies and solutions.  I am joined by Adam Miller - host of the Bowhunter Chronicles podcast as we co-air a discussion about the recent Michigan Deer Management Initiative Recommendations. How did those meetings with public input for new regulations actually go, and what will be the outcome for deer hunting in Michigan - we share our takes with some controversial regulations - like youth season restructuring, APRā€™s coming into play, possible earn a buck, and much more. Here's what to look for in this episode:ā€¢ What is the hunting culture issue Adam speaks of in Michigan?ā€¢ What seems to be a big fail in the DMI process according to us both?ā€¢ Do youth seasons help or hurt with the Michigan buck-centric culture (meaning our obsession to shoot lots of bucks instead of does, which leads to an unhealthy and imbalanced deer herd).ā€¢ And will baiting be reinstated - is that good or bad?And a whole lot more High IQ stuff in there!Year Theme: To Be a Greater HunterSeries: Hunting Controversies & SolutionsEpisode # 55Guests: Host Adam Lewis, Guest - Adam Miller (Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bowhunterchronicles_podcast/ Website: https://bowhunterchroniclespodcast.com/)IQ ranking - 5 (intermediate)DEER IQ Services:ā€¢ Surgical Hunting Small Group - email Adam for interest [email protected] ā€¢ if interested in a whitetail weekend workshop, strategic land and hunting plans for your private land,  or a public land hunting analysis, visit here:  https://forms.gle/peiUQPgUWDKkGG6g7MORE DEER IQ Stuff:  Get started - website overview HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-overview/Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762Deer IQ  FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/Deer IQ Test: https://deeriq.com/deeriqtest/Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide:  https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/Curriculum: https://deeriq.com/curriculum/Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon

  • In this episode weā€™re in a new series - Hunting Controversies & Solutions.  I was warned not to cover this topic, because itā€™s probably the most controversial and maybe divisive one in the deer hunting world - Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD. But weā€™re going to look at because I think itā€™s important to know about & discuss. Weā€™ll get an overview of what it is, how states have handled or mishandled it, and opinions on potential solutions from a DNR Biologist, 2 top scientists, and a very knowledgeable Deer Farmer. And, youā€™re going to want to write some of this overflowing wealth of wisdom down, and reflect on it after to get the most out of it. • In this episode we wrapup our series - The Legacy of Great Hunters. We look at the topic of hunter recruitment and retention - why is this so important, and what is our role in ensuring hunting sticks around for generations down the road? This is a very important topic, because the decisions, or lack thereof today will affect what we leave behind - for better or worse. Iā€™m joined by Megan Plete Postol, who has more experience than most in the best ways to reach new hunters - Is it youth seasons? Do those even work? I think it's an important discussion that will make you think. Topics Discussed:ā€¢ Why we are currently seeing a decline in hunters, and why this matters.ā€¢ The reasons people get into hunting now, vs. why they did in the past.  An important distinction to        remember if we want to reach new hunters.ā€¢ Who should be our focus - what people group, if we really want to expand the deer hunting lifestyle.ā€¢ What are the barriers to new hunters we need to help remove to grow hunting.ā€¢ Avenues to get involved to be a solution to this, and get involved with others - something that in this    internet age we have seem to have lost. And much more!Year Theme: To Be a Greater HunterSeries: The Legacy of Great HuntersEpisode # 48Guest: Host Adam Lewis; Megan Plete Postol: https://deerassociation.com/ IQ ranking - 1 (beginner)DEER IQ Services Signup (Signup for more information if interested in a whitetail weekend workshop, strategic land and hunting plans for your private land,  or a public land hunting analysis): : https://forms.gle/peiUQPgUWDKkGG6g7MORE DEER IQ Stuff: Get started - website overview HERE: https://deeriq.com/full-overview/Facebook Private Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/511109237864762Deer IQ  FREE Journal: https://deeriq.com/journal/Deer IQ Test: https://deeriq.com/deeriqtest/Pressured Public Lands Hunting Guide:  https://deeriq.com/public-land-hunting-guide/Curriculum: https://deeriq.com/curriculum/Newsletter Signup: https://deeriq.com/signup/Patreon - Contribute Financially to Deer IQ: https://www.patreon.com/DeerIQPatreon

  • In this double episode we continue our series - The Legacy of Great Hunters. I interview Michigan DNR deer specialist Chad Stewart, and we get very candid about regulations, if they are working, and we discuss some potential fixes to perceived problems in Michigan. This was recorded several months ago, and since Michigan has started an initiative with the goal of improving regulations (also, Iā€™ve slightly changed some of my stances since this recording, namely regarding youth seasons being doe only - read my full thoughts in this related article HERE ) This discussion is still very valid, and also might apply to other states in similar situations. Chad gives his take on a few of my proposed changes - one of which he says is terrible! If youā€™re not happy with deer hunting regulations, how the DNR is handling your deer herd, and feel helpless about what to do to fix things, I think this podcast is for you. And please excuse a bit of throat clearing and some hard cuts, as I had some allergies at the time and tried to edit some of this out.SHOW NOTES:Part 1:ā€¢ Chadā€™s background as a hunter and professional DNR biologistā€¢ Chadā€™s take on stewardship and conservation - whatā€™s the difference and       who is responsible for the health of the deer herd?ā€¢ How regulations are made, and how they can be changedā€¢ Harvest data collection - the old surveys, their reliability, and why the      switch       to mandatory reporting was madeā€¢ What recommendations of the DNR to the NRC are based on for new    regulationsā€¢ Is science or hunter opinion driving hunting regulation decisions? What    should in Chadā€™s opinion?Part 2:ā€¢ Are deer tag sale revenues driving decisions on Michigan seasons and    license structure?ā€¢ Do liberal, long deer seasons and increased opportunities actually help    hunter retention and taking more deer?ā€¢ Are youth seasons actually working for getting and retaining new hunters?ā€¢ Chadā€™s reaction to my proposed idea to restrict what youth hunters can takeā€¢ Public land changes - my proposed changes for trimming and screw in gear    holders, and Chadā€™s reaction.ā€¢ Will zones for rifle and shotgun change, and what we can use in these        zones in the foreseeable future?Make sure to download our FREE journal to help with the episode, so you get the most possible out of it! • In this episode we continue our series "The Legacy of Great Hunters," Part 3 - Talking with the National Deer Association's Chief Conservation Officer Kip Adams about what healthy deer herds really look like, and what we need to do to make/keep them that way - both on an individual level, and on a state level. I also dig into the data of Michigan's harvest, and get Kip's take on that on how to maybe turn some things around in my home state. This is a good one for all hunters who want to make a difference and leave things better than we found them. This episode includes: ā€¢ Kip's perspective on what a healthy deer herd really looks like, and indicators to look for.ā€¢ What healthy sex and age ratios actually are, and how and exactly when to measure them.ā€¢ What states and individuals can do to balance the herd for age and sex ratio.ā€¢ Is Education or State Regulation better at balancing a herd?ā€¢ For states (like Michigan) that have an unhealthy balance of taking bucks over does, what can help turn this around.ā€¢ Kip's take on the effectiveness of 1 buck tag and also Earn a Buck.ā€¢ A good way YOU can estimate your local herd so you can make good harvest goals. And so much more!! Make sure to download our FREE journal to help with the episode, so you get the most possible out of it!
