Welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies! The show where we donât just talk smack about movies, we celebrate them!
Weâre back after (check notes) FOUR YEARS(?!) to talk about the year of film in 2024! Itâs been a long time since weâve done one of these, so you may be wondering why we were so eager to record a podcast about 2024 films than years past. While 2024 was a bad year for most of the world, it was a pretty strong year for entertainment all around, including movies. While it got off to a rough start with movies that didnât click with audiences and hit at the box office, by the end of the year we got a lot of interesting and entertaining gems that delighted film critics and moviegoing audiences alike. I think thatâs why we have an Oscars race this year where you have a lot of films people have seen and are genuinely enthusiastic about, plus Emilia Perez for some reason, and the lack of clear overwhelming favorites like Oppenheimer and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once like the past two years has made the Awards season really competitive, to the point where itâs hard to predict what will win at the Oscars this year, especially in the Best Picture race. Some critics and commentators consider 2024 a weaker year for film than years previous, but personally, this was the most engaged moviegoing year Iâve ever had. This is the first year since I (Lum) started using Letterboxd over a decade ago where I managed to see over 100 movies that came out that year within the year itself! Only time will tell which films will be remembered as part of the canon of great and essential cinema, but as far as Iâm concerned, there were plenty of great films that came out in 2024 that I adore and want to explore, so weâre here to discuss them so much more!
Vlord and I each count down our Top 10 favorite films from 2024, celebrating the films we enjoyed and resonated with the most. Then, we discuss all the films and categories nominated at the 97th Academy Awards, giving our thoughts on the nominations picked for each category and speculating on who the Academy will pick as winners. As someone who has listened to lots of Oscars-related podcasts over the course of this Awards season, I can guarantee you that you wonât find a longer discussion of the Short Film categories on any other film podcasts! So get listen up and listen good to our thoughts on the best and most awarded movies of 2024 (not necessarily the same) in our nearly 4-hour long podcast thatâs probably longer than this yearâs Oscars ceremony itself!

Is your shed carapace feeling especially lost and empty after the ending of My Hero Academia? Soju has you covered, as JUDER and Hyeong Eun's smash hit Webtoon, "â Jungle Juiceâ " flies onto the scene with its iridescent dragonfly wings! Together with special guest â Darfoxâ of â Manga Machinationsâ , Amber and Marion scuttle into a venomous discussion about super-powered bug-humans fighting to protect society while trying to preserving their own humanity... Actually, it wasn't *that* toxic but we couldn't help but pile on the bug puns, because it's actually quite informative about insects! Tune in with your antennae to see whether or this series could stand on its own six legs (or thousand--there *are* quite a lot of bugs in it!)

It's our first BL! It might have taken 10 episodes, but I don't think it'll take 10 more for the next one! Semantic Error is a fun romance story about a guy who excels within rules and boundaries falling in love with the world's pettiest fusion of drama and libido. Making good on their promise to Deb Aoki from episode 3, Amber and Marion finally understand the hype behind the hit manhwa that was also adapted to live action! Read the series on Manta and preorder the physical edition by Ize Press before artist Angy comes to New York Comic Con this October!

Content Warning: This episode and the series it covers (SSS-Class Revival Hunter) goes into discussion about sensitive topics such as suicide and child starvation.
Hunter assemble! This month we're bringing to you an action series jam-packed with some of the most emotional peaks and valleys we've ever experienced in the Returner/Tower Fantasy genre -- SSS-Class Revival Hunter! What starts as a typical story with a setup akin to Re:Zero ends up unraveling into a masterfully written story about self-actualization, and reining in a Jesus complex before it completely breaks our ML, Confucius Kim. By all means, there were so many things that could have gone wrong in this series, but much like "What It Means To Be You," the level of tact and emotional intelligence in the writing displays a deep understanding and empathy toward the human condition. Join Marion and Amber as they break down what made this Tapas series so special!

Content Warning: This episode and the series it covers (What It Means to Be You) goes into discussion about sensitive topics such as suicide and suicidal ideation, depression/mental illness, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, abortion/miscarriages, and alcoholism. This month we're joined by a new friend: Witlash, mod over at r/OtomeIsekai on Reddit! She brings us some great perspective as a veteran manhwa/webtoon reader who loves romance fantasy! A series like "What It Means To Be You" deserves a finely-toothed comb to go over every just how impactful and engaging it is. The premise? A couple discovers they swap bodies whenever one of them commits suicide. For people concerned about how the heavy subjects are handled, we do have good news. Everything is handled with the proper level of empathy and weight, with the darker events informing the emotional/psychological development of its characters--like an Inio Asano or Shuzo Oshimi manga. Join us for one of our longest convos yet as we discover the power of empathy and surviving!988 is the Suicide & Crisis Prevention Hotline. If you're struggling, please know there will always be someone around that can listen.

It's Spring, and we are sooo back! After reading "Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint," we were curious about singNsong's other work, "The World After The Fall." Did it manage to live up to expectations? Not quite, but there's still a lot to dissect about it! In this delirious episode, we have some strong feelings about storytelling and the reader experience. If you enjoyed the discussion, go ahead and give us a like or a rating, or reach out to us on socials!
