Itâs Die Hard in a bank!
This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we plug into SWORDFISH â the slick, post-Matrix cyber-thriller produced by Joel Silver and directed by Dominic Sena. With Hugh Jackman hacking mainframes under extreme duress, John Travolta dropping pseudo-Brechtian monologues, Halle Berry delivering the most famous topless scene of the early 2000s, and Don Cheadle constantly violating peopleâs civil rights, itâs a film that dares to ask: does it matter if a movie makes no sense, as long as itâs entertaining? We also dig into Swordfish's dense meta-layering and debate the broader question: when is too much meta actually bad for the form? As always we break the film down in detail in our âAnatomy of an Action Movie sectionâ, hand out some âDie Hard Oscarsâ and wrestle with some âDouble Jeopardyâ brain teasersâŠheck, thereâs even a Vinnie Jones impression thrown into the mix for good measure! What more could you possibly want?!

Itâs Die Hard in Las Vegas!
This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we strap on our snakeskin boots and bullet belts for a dive into 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND - the loud, chaotic, Elvis-themed heist movie that somehow manages to sneak in a surprising amount of DIE HARD DNA!
Two career criminals, Michael Zane (Kurt Russell), and Thomas Murphy (Kevin Costner) team up to pull a casino robbery in Las Vegas during an Elvis convention. However, the botched heist results in a high body count and in the aftermath, the psychotic, self-serving Murphy betrays Michael and the rest of the crew, sparking an expansive feud between the two men, who each try to reclaim their ill-gotten gains from the other, leaving an escalating trail of carnage in their wake.
We explore how this underrated oddity isnât merely a post-Tarantino shoot-âem-up, but a film obsessed with American archetypes - outlaws, lawmen, lone wolves, and false idols. We also dig into the maximalist performances from Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner, the mythic cowboy framing, and how the film situates itself in the lineage of Western icons reimagined for the modern age. Is it Die Hard in a jumpsuit? Tune in and find out!

Itâs Die Hard on an ice cream truck!
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, weâre trying to keep our collective cool as we discuss the 1999 buddy-comedy/action-misfire CHILL FACTOR! Joining us on our adventure is none other than special guest Matthew Strohl, a professor at the University of Montana and author of the books Hard to Watch and Why Itâs Ok To Love Bad Movies!
When an experimental military chemical weapon nicknamed "Elvis" accidentally falls into civilian hands, a hapless ice cream truck driver (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and down-on-his-luck diner cook (Skeet Ulrich) team up to keep it away from the ruthless mercenaries who are trying to steal it. The catch is that if "Elvis" heats above 50 degrees, it will detonate with catastrophic consequences â forcing the unlikely duo to outrun the bad guys and keep the temperature under that threshold, all while attempting to safely deliver the precarious device to a military facility!
We start by analyzing the filmâs DNA, which includes genetic links to a myriad of movies including DIE HARD, SPEED, THE ROCK, THELMA & LOUISE, and most surprisingly, A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. Backed by Mattâs spirited defense case, we try to give this much maligned (and largely forgotten) motion picture its day in court, applying the thesis espoused in his excellent books to the film. Against the odds, this approach leads to a passionate (and unexpectedly deep) discussion about how we choose to engage with artâŠas CHILL FACTOR becomes a living example of âwhy itâs okay to love to bad moviesâ! But the fun doesnât stop there...because as always we wrap things up with the DIE HARD OSCARS and the DOUBLE JEOPARDY trivia quiz!

Itâs Die Hard on a suburban street!
This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, weâre looking into the most sinister street in AmericaâŠARLINGTON ROAD! And to investigate this mysterious neighborhood we enlisted special guest and returning DHOAB all-star Bilge Ebiri!
After saving their sonâs life, widowed college professor and terrorism expert Michael Faraday (Jeff Bridges) gradually begins to suspect that his seemingly perfect new neighbors - Oliver and Cheryl Lang (Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack) - are involved in a domestic terror plot. As he mounts a rogue investigation into their lives, Faradayâs obsession with uncovering the truth spirals into paranoia, isolation, and a deadly battle of wills, one that threatens not only his life, but that of his young son Grant (Spencer Treat Clark).
During this wide-ranging discussion about this eerily prescient film, the guys go into detail on the career of boomer icon Jeff Bridges (with Bridges scholar Bilge) and discuss the genius of casting Tim Robbins against type as a terrifying villain.

Itâs Die Hard underwaterâŠwith sharks!
This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK, weâre diving headfirst into one of the wettest, wildest, and wackiest Die Hard riffs of the late '90s: DEEP BLUE SEA (1999), directed by none other than Renny Harlin! Weâre joined by special guest Justin LaLiberty - director of operations for Vinegar Syndrome and a key figure in the ongoing physical media renaissance - to talk shark attacks, elevator shafts, and Samuel L. Jacksonâs iconic âinterrupted monologueâ moment!
From the unmistakable DIE HARD FRANCHISE DNA, to the undersea siege structure and classic containment premise, we trace just how much Deep Blue Sea swims in McClane-infested waters! We also discuss the unusual, uneven career of Thomas Jane, the effervescent magic of LL Cool J, and that bizarre Ronny Cox âcameoâ! Itâs DIE HARD in an underwater lab full of brain-enhanced sharks, and it might just be the most fun you can have in a Renny Harlin flick that isnât Die Hard 2!

It's Die Hard in a simulation!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are following the white rabbit into one of the most prophetic and influential movie of the 90s - The Matrix (1999) - with special guest Matt Zoller Seitz, the renowned Editor at Large of rogerebert.com. He is a Features Writer at New York Magazine, and is the author of many books, including books on Wes Anderson, Mad Men, The Sopranos, and many more. Matt not only loves this movie, but talks eloquently about how it changed his life.
Released in the banner year of 1999, The Matrix follows Thomas Anderson, a mild-mannered software engineer who moonlights as a notorious hacker known as Neo, discovers to his horror that the world he lives in is actually an elaborate simulated reality created by intelligent machines who have subjugated humanity. Guided by the enigmatic resistance leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and the skilled warrior Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), Neo learns the truth about the Matrix and his potential role as "The One," a prophesied savior who can bend, and perhaps break, its rules. As he battles powerful Agents led by the ruthless Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), Neo must embrace his destiny and free his mind to prevent the machines' enslavement of humanity.
We talk about the film's unexpected connections to Die Hard (Kinda blowing Matt's mind), the movie's philosophical complexity (Plato! Descartes! Baurdrillard!), it's appropriation by both the right and left-wing, and if it can be seen, 26 years on, as being somewhat optimistic. We also talk about the culture-chaning action, the amazing performances by Reeves, Moss, Fishburne, and Weaving, and how the movie's style hasn't aged a day.

Itâs Die Hard under martial law!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are taking on one of the most provocative and eerily prescient action-thrillers of the â90s - The Siege (1998) - with special guest Jason Bailey, the esteemed film critic, author, and podcaster whose work has appeared in The Playlist, The New York Times, Vulture, Vice, Rolling Stone, Slate, and more. Not only is Jason a brilliant film thinker, but he might know our show even better than we do!
Released three years before 9/11, The Siege follows Denzel Washingtonâs no-nonsense FBI agent as he tries to stop a wave of terrorist attacks in New York, while navigating political interference from Annette Beningâs enigmatic CIA operative and the creeping authoritarian overreach of Bruce Willisâ hardline general. Meanwhile, Tony Shalhoub delivers one of the filmâs most deeply human performances, grounding the storyâs complex, often unsettling politics.
We dig into the filmâs depiction of New York City, what it gets right, wrong, and unexpectedly prophetic, and how it reckons with issues of surveillance, civil liberties, and national security in ways that still feel shockingly relevant today. We also break down the performances of the four leads, the filmâs tense, procedural thriller mechanics, and where it sits in the broader landscape of '90s action films that flirted with real-world geopolitics.
So strap in for one of our most in-depth, thought-provoking episodes yet!

Itâs Die Hard in a casino!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are stepping into the swirling, neon-drenched chaos of Brian De Palmaâs SNAKE EYES (1998) - joined by none other than Travis Woods, the highly acclaimed film writer who is literally writing the book on De Palma.
During a high-profile boxing match in Atlantic City, corrupt local detective Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage) witnesses the assassination of the U.S. Secretary of Defense, who was being guarded by his best friend, US Navy Commander Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise). With thousands of people trapped inside the casino, and a hurricane on the way, the building becomes a deadly pressure cooker, and as Santoro unearths a dark conspiracy, he must decide whether to take a pay off and look the other wayâŠor risk everything to expose the truth.
What follows is a pressure-cooker thriller set almost entirely inside this one building, packed with impossibly complex tracking shots, split diopters galore, and some of the most ostentatious filmmaking flexes of De Palmaâs career. We break down how Snake Eyes really is both âDie Hard in a casinoâ and âDie Hard 2 in a casinoâ, why itâs a perfect showcase for Cageâs full-throttle charisma, and how De Palma - the king of cinematic maximalism - injects pure operatic style into a film thatâs basically one long unraveling conspiracy. Plus, Travis takes us deep into De Palmaâs career, his recurring themes of surveillance, voyeurism, and deception, and where Snake Eyes fits amidst the great manâs remarkable legacy. So throw on your loudest suit, place your bets, and join us as we go all-in on this gloriously demented, spectacularly sleazy thriller! Here comes the pain, baby!

Itâs Die Hard in a police station!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are locked into a high-stakes discussion on The Negotiator - the 1998 action-thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey in a battle of wits, words, and tactical mind games!
When he becomes inveigled in a corruption scandal involving suspected embezzlement of the Chicago P.D. pensionâs fund, expert hostage negotiator Danny Roman (Samuel L. Jackson) decides to turn the tables and takes hostages at the Internal Affairs bureau, in an effort to find the truth and clear his name. Sensing that he has enemies in his own midst, Roman demands that the only negotiator he will speak to be Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), a mysterious stranger from an entirely different district. But can Sabian be trusted? And how do you negotiate your way out when everyone assumes you are the real villain?
In this tightly wound pressure-cooker thriller, we break down how The Negotiator cleverly inverts the Die Hard formula - putting the good guy in control of the siege, with a besieged skyscraper, hostages, FBI interference, and a whole lot of air shaft action! We explore the filmâs copious Die Hard DNA, from over-the-radio showdowns and ill-fated SWAT assaults to computer hacking, power shutdowns, and even a debate about old Western movies between the two adversaries! We also highlight the killer supporting cast, the filmâs âGlengarry with Gunsâ energy, and why F. Gary Gray deserves more love! Plus, we dig into the importance of the Chicago setting and discuss how the film channels The Fugitive with its âwrongly accusedâ narrative - shoutout to Andrew Davis! Chicago forever! As usual we hand out our Die Hard Oscars to worthy candidates and wrap things up with some âDouble Jeopardyâ brain teasers!

Itâs Die Hard on an asteroid!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are going ballistic with a very special guest: Brad Peyton, director of blockbuster smashes such as San Andreas and Rampage!
When NASA discover that a massive âglobal killerâ asteroid is heading inexorably towards Earth, the boffins hatch an audacious plan to save humanity by landing a team on the asteroid and blowing it up from the inside. However, the only person capable of performing this Herculean task is expert oil driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his rowdy team of roughnecks, who must somehow learn to become astronauts in 12 days in order to complete this seemingly impossible mission!
In this suitably epic episode, we dive deep into the history of the disaster movie genre with none other than Brad Peyton, the director behind San Andreas and Rampage. From the towering spectacle of The Towering Inferno to the genre-defining Die Hard, we explore how disaster films evolved into high-stakes, character-driven blockbusters offering enormous spectacle. Brad, a passionate cinephile, makes a compelling case for Michael Bay as an American auteur, breaking down the directorâs signature visual style and bombastic approach to storytelling. We also discuss how Armageddon took the concept of âBruce Willis saves the dayâ the day to the maximum extreme, pushing the limits of what a disaster movie could be.
This was a wide-ranging, emotional, and inspiring conversation, as Brad shared his insights on crafting large-scale destruction while keeping the human stakes front and center. He walks us through his approach to making a great disaster movie, the delicate balance of tension and spectacle, and why audiences are drawn to stories of survival against impossible odds. Things also got personal, as the guys discussed the power of cinema to uplift and entertain, and how, at their core, disaster movies remind us of resilience, courage, and the human spirit. This is an episode you wonât want to miss â itâs our biggest, most bombastic episode yet!

Itâs Die Hard in a hospital!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam are taking DESPERATE MEASURES with a very special guest: Peter Gawthorne, aka Philâs dad!!!
When his young son Matthew is in need of a bone-marrow transplant, his father, San Francisco cop Frank Conner (Andy Garcia) searches desperately for a compatible donor. However, the only candidate he can find is incarcerated murderer Peter McCabe (Michael Keaton), a notorious criminal mastermind. After McCabe agrees to partake in the procedure, he uses the process as an opportunity to launch an audacious, violent escape attempt, but as Frank and the authorities attempt to contain the situation, Frank comes to realize that he and McCabe are in a symbiotic relationship â and that he must somehow capture his new nemesis while ensuring McCabe is not killed in the process!
In this thrilling episode of DIE HARD ON A BLANK, we tackle this high-stakes action thriller directed by French New Wave titan Barbet Schroeder. With its tense hospital setting and cat-and-mouse dynamics, this film gives the 'Die Hard formula' a fresh, medical twist - complete with explosive action and an unrelentingly evil (yet hugely charismatic) villain. We dive into Keatonâs chilling performance as Peter McCabe, a dangerous sociopath whose bone marrow might be the key to saving a dying boyâs life, and explore Andy Garciaâs portrayal of a desperate father willing to break every rule to save his son. How does this underrated gem measure up against other films in the Die Hard-on-a-[blank] subgenre? Weâve got all the answers!
But thatâs not all! Joining us this week is a very special guest, Philâs dad Peter Gawthorne, a devoted listener of the show and a former hospital manager himself! Itâs Die Hard in a creature feature!
This week, hosts Phil and Liam dive into the murky depths of DEEP RISING with special guest Rob Hackett, an executive at James Wanâs company Atomic Monster!
During a rough storm, Captain John Finnegan (Treat Williams) and his crew are hired by a group of mercenaries to take them to an undisclosed location in the South China sea. Unbeknownst to Finnegan, the mercenaries plan to hijack and rob a recently built luxury cruise liner, but when they arrive, they find the massive ship eerily deserted. As the group attempt to uncover this mystery and complete their mission, they realize that the entire ship is infested with deadly tentacular beasties who have slaughtered everyone on board. Can Finnegan and the group find a way to escape this floating death house before the damaged ship sinks into the dark ocean?
The episode explores the unique challenges of pulling off a horror-comedy like DEEP RISING, where the tone constantly shifts between gruesome terror and over-the-top action. Rob Hackett lends his expertise from the world of genre filmmaking, shedding light on why blending horror and humor can be so tricky, and why itâs so rewarding when it is executed this skillfully. From the visual effects to the memorable performances, this film serves as a perfect example of how genre-blending can work when the right balance is struck.
As always, the discussion wouldnât be complete without dissecting the âDie Hard DNAâ that runs through DEEP RISING - an ensemble of quirky characters trapped in a confined space with a deadly threat, all while a tough-as-nails, monologuing protagonist, played by Treat Williams, steps up to lead the charge. Stay tuned for a look at the film's influences, its lasting cult appeal, and why itâs such an underrated gem in the action-horror world. This week, hosts Phil and Liam dive headfirst into the watery chaos of HARD RAIN with special guest Kris Tapley of the 50MPH Podcast!
As the small midwestern town of Huntingberg, Indiana is overwhelmed by an epic flood, armored car security guard Tom (Christian Slater) finds himself in the middle of heist plot orchestrated by determined thief Jim (Morgan Freeman). Itâs Die Hard in a hitman movie!
This week itâs the DIE HARD ON A BLANK 50th episode bonanza, and Phil and Liam are tracking down THE JACKAL, the 1997 action-thriller starring Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, Sidney Poitier, Diane Venora and J.K. Simmons!
After an FBI raid results in the death of a vicious Russian gangster, the mobsterâs aggrieved brother hires an elusive international assassin known as âthe Jackalâ (Bruce Willis) for a retaliatory killing against a high-profile American target. But because so few people have ever seen this wily hitman in the flesh, FBI Deputy Director Carter Preston (Sidney Poitier) decides to bring one of the Jackalâs former cohorts - imprisoned IRA sniper Declan Mulqueen (Richard Gere) - onto the task force assigned to stop him. Can Carter, Declan and the team track down and take out the Jackal before he completes his deadly mission?
With its high-stakes terrorism plot and escalating action, THE JACKAL shares strong DNA with the DIE HARD series, providing ample material for comparison. Phil also uncovers some fascinating information about alternative casting choices for both films, that spark some captivating thought experiments. Did you know that Richard Gere was formally offered the role of John McClane, and that producer Joel Silver aggressively pursued him for the part?
Phil loves this film, whereas Liam is not so hot on it, so they each present the case for the defense and the prosecution. They discuss the performances of the lead actors, particularly Bruce Willis's portrayal of the cold-blooded assassin, and Richard Gere's complex, reluctant hero, as well as the excellent supporting turns from Sidney Poitier and Diane Venora (Venora-Cast anyone???). The episode also explores the film's reception, examining its critical reviews and box office performance, (and controversies), and the guys discuss how it fits within the broader action-thriller genre of the late 1990s. The late appearance of the Marine heavy helicopter in the filmâs finale ticks the âPhilly Specialâ box and sends Phil into delirious rapture!
As always events culminate with the DIE HARD Oscars and the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz, but stay tuned for a very exciting announcement at the end of the show!

This week, your co-pilots Phil Gawthorne and Liam Billingham take you on a thrilling ride on AIR FORCE ONE, with special guest Adam Volerich from the Eye of the Duck podcast!
Shortly after delivering a controversial speech where he vows to never to negotiate with terrorists, US President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) finds himself on the horns of a dilemma when the Presidential plane known as Air Force One is taken over by a group of ruthless Russian terrorists led by Egor Korshunov (Gary Oldman). With his staff and his family now among the hostages, Marshall must work to resolve the situation and save the day, while his squabbling political colleagues attempt to manage the crisis from the ground. Can Marshall and co defeat the terrorists before his own family are executed, and/or the plane crashes?
The guys dissect this filmâs bountiful âDie Hard DNAâ and dive deep into Hollywood's complex relationship with the Presidency over the years, exploring how the portrayal of the Commander-in-Chief has evolved over time, and what this reveals about American culture and values throughout different eras. In the process, they grapple with a number of thought-provoking questions, such as what's the difference between good jingoism and bad jingoism? Is patriotism really a virtue of the vicious? And are we overthinking all this?
The lads also closely examine Harrison Ford's iconic performance â and the pros and cons of what his persona brings aboard - in a detailed section about the filmâs hero, President James Marshall. The final discussion is as riveting as the film itself, covering themes of leadership, crisis management, and the politics of fear. Events culminate with the Die Hard Oscars and the âDouble Jeopardyâ Trivia Quiz where the scores can really changeâŠif that score isnât spoiled by an annoying blabbermouth aide!
