And if you're a global multinational, the challenges can be even more complicated. Your day to day can be a mix of conflicting priorities, such as in dealing with the needs of today's business while also keeping an eye on the future, a future which includes health system transformations, personalized health, and health equity.

In this episode I speak with Ahmed Elhusseiny, the area head for Roche Pharma in Asia Pacific at their offices in Singapore to discuss how a global multinational can drive change.

During this podcast Ahmed and I discuss:

The importance of being mission-oriented to address systemic health challenges

How Roche’s approach to data-driven healthcare starts with understanding unmet customer needs

Examples of Roche’s effectiveness in Public-Private Partnerships

The new Economist Whitepaper supported by Roche highlighting APAC’s un-met needs in Breast Cancer

    About Ahmend

  • Engaging with active and well-informed individuals is the essential element of any successful health ecosystem. Without them, healthcare and digital health companies are building solutions that can’t improve health outcomes. Patient advocacy groups are one way that individuals can become empowered. But across the world, the impact of such groups is dependent on external factors to help them achieve scale. In this episode, I speak with Ruth Kuguru, the Regional Head for Communications and Patient Engagement for Novartis who has developed a platform to change this dynamic for patient advocacy groups. During this podcast, we discuss:

How Novartis created a platform to bring together different stakeholders and putting patients at the forefront of improving Habitats – another word for Ecosystems

Describing the components of the Alliance & Partnerships for Patient Innovation & Solutions (APPIS) including a case study in the Philippines

Why patient advocacy groups are the “real deal” for creating engaged individuals

Scaling the impact of patient advocacy into a corporate capability that goes beyond the traditional model for pharma manufacturers

  • For some Digital Health companies, especially those in very developed healthcare systems, success can be contingent on identifying a single core problem and then keeping a tight focus on this challenge when iteratively building your great solution. But not every entrepreneur or corporate innovator has the luxury to take this path, especially when there are overlapping areas of need for your customers.
In this episode, we return to Indonesia to examine both the challenge and the successful approach taken by Tiffany Robyn Soetikno, the Founder and COO of PT Global Urban Esensial. Robyn is a skilled entrepreneur who grew up in the Indonesian Healthcare industry. The results (so far) from her efforts have led to a startup delivering impact for 2.5 million individuals, 70,000 doctors, and 1,700 pharmacists.
    In our discussion, we cover:
    • A summary of the Indonesia healthcare landscape
    • Building a complex product roadmap and making it work
    • Her process for deriving consumer insights
    • Building scale across each of the different customers while managing growth

    Robyn Soetikno
Robyn founded PT Global Urban Esensial (PT GUE, LLC), a leading digital health startup in Indonesia with a vision to reduce the relationship gaps between doctors and patients. Driven to create a health ecosystem that connects different stakeholders, GUE, LLC has developed three pillars: patient management, doctor management and medication supply.
Robyn is passionate about enabling stakeholders within the healthcare industry, using technology to address gaps in the healthcare sector. As a startup founder, she has experience in making the jump from zero to one, scaling up, and transforming the team accordingly. She has also assisted several incumbents to grab opportunities in digital.
In 2019, Robyn was named 30 Under 30 - Asia - 2019 under Healthcare and Science category. She was the only Indonesian entrepreneur honored by Forbes.
Robyn earned her Masters of Science degree in International Health Management from Imperial College, London and her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Public Health and Theatre from Sarah Lawrence College, New York.

  • In any health system, a shift to value based healthcare is a desirable outcome. Especially if it can be combined with patient-centric clinical journeys.
In this episode, Sylvana Sinha, the founder and CEO of Praava Health and I discuss the barriers and challenges to achieving this vision.
With her background in health policy, international law, and as an entrepreneur, we have an insightful and fact-filled discussion covering topics including:
    • The cultural and socio-economic backdrop of Bangladesh, the 8th most populous country in the world
    • The current dynamics of access and affordability facing Bangladeshis today
    • The barriers and inefficiencies in creating a value-based healthcare system, including lack of labs, pharmacies, and overall accountability
    • Lessons learned from Praava Health in addressing these challenges
    • How COVID accelerated the need for more technology and new value based models

  • In this episode, we’re taking a deep dive into Indonesia. For some, the mention of this country might evoke extreme feelings. On one hand, there is the frustration of sitting in four-hour-long traffic jams in Jakarta. On the other hand, there are smiles all around when picturing a perfect holiday in Bali.
But for healthcare professionals, the identity of Indonesia is dominated by the unique geography of the country – a population of 275 million people living across 6,000 islands.
To help us better understand the healthcare challenges in Indonesia, which extends across more than 17,000 islands, I’m joined by one of its most visible entrepreneurs: Jonathan Sudharta, CEO of Halodoc. Founded in 2016, the company raised an $80 million Series C in 2021.

In this episode, you’ll hear about:
    • Access and affordability challenges stemming from Indonesia’s economic development, demographics, and archipelago geography
    • The impact of Universal Healthcare, introduced in 2014
    • The opportunity and early impact of digital health – including Halodoc – on health outcomes

    Jonathan Sudharta, Co-founder and CEO
Jonathan Sudharta has over 15 years of professional experience in the healthcare industry, mostly in Indonesia and also abroad. Before establishing Halodoc, Jonathan held several key positions in Mensa Group, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Indonesia.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in e-Commerce from Curtin University in Perth Australia, he began his career in sales management and has grown through the ranks in the commercial side of the organization. He started as a sales representative, after which he became the Commercial Director in Mensa Group where he gained a deep understanding of the sales cycle of the business, and finally he moved up to the key position of Business Development Director to lead the commercial initiatives of the group.
Born in a healthcare group family, Jonathan grew up with a lot of awareness about serving people to maintain their wellness and helping Indonesian people achieve a better living through better health. That is the main reason why he decided to establish Halodoc, whose main mission is to simplify access to healthcare through the use of technology.
Indonesia’s healthcare has many critical challenges, some of these are the inequality of health services across the archipelago, time-to-service for health in the urban areas, and so on.
The aforementioned challenges require a breakthrough to solve from the fundamental level, thus technology is the key to attack the problems from the roots.

  • In this episode, we start our journey for Season 2 where we explore the challenges facing APAC that can lead to innovative solutions powered by Digital Health.
Jeremy Lim is a renowned health policy expert and CEO of AMILI, the first gut microbiome lab in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Through the lens of population health and public policy, Jeremy and I discuss the need for personalised nutrition and why it can improve health outcomes.
    Our conversation covers:
    • The need for an Asia-based pool of data on nutrition based on the unique cultures and food choices found across the region
    • Why personalised nutrition is another reason for public health to innovate beyond a “one-size fits all” approach
    • The challenge of successfully using nudging behaviours to improve health outcomes
    • When is the optimal time to understand your microbiome?

Assoc Prof Jeremy Lim is Co-founder and CEO of AMILI, the region’s first precision gut microbiome company which is building up the world’s largest multi-ethnic Asia database of microbiome sequences and associated data. He brings diverse and unique perspectives into this role as a startup founder, having spent substantial time in public and private healthcare across Asia as well as in policy advisory with Singapore's Ministry of Health, the World Bank and the World Health Organization.

He is also director for global health in the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Outside academia, Jeremy serves on the boards of various for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in different aspects of healthcare including migrant worker health, end of life care and digital health interventions. He trained in surgery and public health, attaining post-graduate qualifications in both from the UK and US.

“What are the opportunities out there for people to live in good health, to be independent, and to be dignified? This goes across technologies, housing models, and service innovations.”
    — Janice Chia, Ageing Asia

”In a healthcare ecosystem, party interests-- of patients, health providers, funders, government and private insurance-- are not aligned. This results in a lack of help for patients to find the treatment they need, and funders cannot intervene early enough to help keep costs under control.”
    — Xing Sun, AXA Next Business Innovation Centre Asia

”On average across Southeast Asia, you know, patients will actually visit a pharmacy almost 12 times a year, but when they visit a physician, it’s almost 1.2 times a year, right. So when you look at this, this becomes an incredible touch point in terms of patient population.”
    — Farouk Meralli, CEO of mClinica

"When we started out in March, telemedicine was completely illegal in India; there was no way you could tele-consult and give a prescription. So the first telemedicine guidelines were brought out by the government on March 25, 2020. Before that, everything was completely illegal in fact, but the government responded very quickly, considering the pandemic was there. And now everything is well established, and there are clear cut guidelines and rules…within a matter of months, we were doing about 35,000 consults across digital health every month.”
    — Shuchin Bajaj, Founder and Director for Ujala Cygnus

"We should not use our own mentality or our mindset to replace users’ mindset. Sometimes it’s pretty frustrating, because we know we are smarter than them, but you cannot replace them. You have to think in their own way. You have to think of yourself as the user, not yourself. You have to pretend to be a pregnant mother, who just has a high school education, and figure out what her mindset would be.”
    — Stanley Li, CEO and Founder of DXY

  • Ageing and the business of helping individuals as they get older is an expansive problem. It cuts across industries beyond healthcare.
Singaporean entrepreneur Janice Chia is a recognized expert and thought leader in this field, accumulating her vast experience from visiting over 400 residential and aged care homes in over 15 countries as well as founding 2 organizations: Ageing Asia and Aspire55.
Janice founded Ageing Asia with the mission to drive innovation in the way future generations age, by engaging the business community to create better products and services that will enable healthy ageing, independent ageing and dignified ageing.  Since 2009, she has been actively involved in consulting organizations seeking global best practices in housing, health and care models that can be translated for the Asian market.
    Join me as we discuss:

What drove Janice to create a new organization to better define the challenges of ageing?

What is the mindset of people who are in the second half of their lives?

Why is this challenge broader than a healthcare challenge?

Why are the needs of digital health solutions broader than telehealth?

Janice frequently refers to data from the 4th Annual Asia Pacific Silver Economy Business Opportunities Report.  The link to this can also be found below.
