I hope this episode bring you as much joy as it did to me to record it - self-proclaimed cancer kicker, poetry prattler, sales director, photo-grapher, animal lover and nature bather (and possibly the worldās wonkiest qualified personal trainer) Dearbhaile OāHale aka Derv turned to writing when she was diagnosed with breast cancer to help her process the experience. She was generous enough to share some of her poems with us in this special episode, and talk about her own story from diagnosis to now. I hope her words give you some comfort, or perhaps she will inspire you to write yourself.

How do you know what to trust online and even - dare I say it - in podcasts, when it comes to breast cancer? There is so much information out there nowadays including people claiming to have ācuresā and alternatives to traditional treatments. Thatās why I needed to get Consultant Oncologist and Chief Medical Officer for Macmillan, Richard Simcock, onto this episode to help us sift through fact and fiction.

Oncologist and skin care expert Dr Fiona McCarthy talks to Liz about the importance of skincare during treatment, why itās ok to look after yourself, and what actually works.
Itās important to be gentle to your skin during chemotherapy. Use non-perfumed products and avoid soap. You donāt have to spend a lot of money and you donāt need cancer-specific products. If you did want to spend a bit more, Fiona works with and recommends La Roche Posay who have tested their products on people living with cancer. Instead of being confused by serums and toners and drops, Fiona swears by CPM - Cleanse, Moisturise and Protect
Cleanse - Try to avoid soap and look for products with syndets (synthetic detergents - this sounds horrible but itās just soap alternatives which are nice for the skin)Moisturise- Humectants are key as they draw moisture into the skin - Urea, Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and shea butter are key ingredients which actually work for moisturising the skin (look for them in first 4 or 5 listed, and you donāt have to spend loads on it).Protect - A good spf is really important for looking after your skin. It doesnāt need to be expensive but it shouldnāt be in your moisturiser - buy it separate. And it should be SPF 30 or over. Fiona loves Altruist https://altruistsun.com/ that you can get in Boots. If you suffer from dry, flaky heels, or your hands and feet are sore during treatment, she recommends Udderly cream and Flexitol heel balm - for heels and hands
And donāt bother buying collagen.
There's some great advice on the Macmillan website - https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/impacts-of-cancer/changes-to-your-appearance-and-body-image/skin-and-nail-changes-from-cancer-treatment

To mark the return of So Now Iāve Got Breast Cancer, topless marathon runner Louise Butcher discusses her decision to go flat and how sheās come to terms with her new body.
Louise admits to being an anxious hypochondriac, but when she was diagnosed with lobular cancer in 2022, she had to confront the disease sheād always feared. She had both breasts removed, and running kept her sane as she dealt with all the treatments. She now runs topless and has created a storm on the news and social media. She's raising awareness about what it can mean to be flat and how your breasts don't need to define you.

Is it true that sugar feeds cancer? Do you really need to detox? What should you eat when youāve been diagnosed with breast cancer? As a breast surgeon I had no idea my patients were scouring the internet looking for a miracle diet, but the minute I became a patient I realised how much misinformation is out there regarding what we should eat. On this episode Iām going to set the record straight with the help of Dr Clare Shaw, consultant oncology dietitian and author of The Royal Marsden Cancer Cookbook.

One of the questions I dreaded getting asked when I worked as a breast surgeon was āHow do I tell my children?ā I donāt have children of my own, and I had no idea what to say. My breast care nurses would step in and I would breathe a sigh of relief. Judging from all your questions this week, telling your children you have cancer can be fraught with anxiety, worry, guilt and stress. And thatās the last thing you need when youāre going through breast cancer treatment.
This weekās guest is here to help. Caroline Leek is the founder and director of the FruitFly collective. Carolineās mission at FruitFly is to help families talk about cancer, death and grief and to support children of any age with the tools they need to help them cope and know theyāre not alone, and Iām thrilled she was able to join me - IN PERSON - for this special episode which you can also watch on my Youtube channel.

One of the first questions my patients asked when I told them they needed chemo was āAm I going to lose my hair?ā. And when your hair does fall out, there are even more questions. Why does it come back grey and curly? How do I explain to my children that Iām bald? Where can you find a decent wig? On this episode Iām going to answer all your questions about hair loss with this weekās guest, Jasmin Julia Gupta, founder of the charity Cancer Hair Care. She's a hairdresser and a hair loss expert who consults with the NHS and major charities like Breast Cancer Now, Macmillan and the Teenage Cancer Trust, and she wrote the first ever āAfro hair chemotherapy guide.

Just hearing the words āyou need chemotherapyā can turn your world upside down. I hated telling my patients they needed it, and when I found I out I would have it myself, I felt lost.Would my hair fall out? How bad would it be? Would it work? How would I cope? Add to that the other drugs we give patients - targeted therapies and immunotherapy - it can feel like treatment never ends. Thatās when you need someone in your pocket you can call for help, and on this episode we have Rachel Clifton, a Macmillan Breast Oncology Nurse Specialist. I worked with her when I was a consultant at Ipswich and I knew she was the one to answer all your questions. Not only is Rachel an incredible nurse, but sheās passionate about raising the profile of metastatic breast cancer, with the āSecondary. Not Second Rateā campaign. But thereās more - sheās even been a nurse advisor for Holby City.

Rachelās go to sources are Breast Cancer Now, which has useful information about chemo here, and Macmillan, whose chemo pages for breast cancer are here
She also mentioned the amazing Cancer Hair Care - who will be on the show next week! But if you canāt wait their website is here.
