  • This podcast took place in August of 2021 where we discussed what does it take to be a high level coach. Justin Kavanaugh has been coaching for over 15 years and is the #1 best-selling author of the book Man Up. He has trained over 50,000 athletes, helped prepare hundreds of College and future NFL players for their Combines and Pro Days. He has a wealth of training and business experience in the field and is regarded as one of the top speed experts in the country. His ability to assess and breaking down biomechanics to correct sport movement is what he attributes to enhance sport transfer. Some of the athletes Coach Kavanaugh has worked with include standouts such as Olympic Gold medalist Justin Gatlin, UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia, 3rd overall MLB draft pick Eric Hosmer, the USA Women’s Softball Team and NCAA Touchdown and Rushing leader Keenan Reynolds. His emphasis on the complete athlete, mind, body, and spirit, are what he attributes to his and their success.

  • This interview took place with John Meadows and Dr. Ken Kinakin in July 2021, one week before his unfortunate passing. So many great thoughts and ideas from an incredible man. We miss you John. Health and Fitness became a passion of mine at a very young age. I remember very vividly traveling to the local sundry store with my grandmother, and sitting on the floor in the magazine section, reading the “Anatomy and Physiology” section in Muscle and Fitness. I don’t think too many other 12 year olds were interested in this kind of thing, but I thought it was really cool. My grandmother was a very well known cook in our local restaurant, where much of the town ate, so she would always run into people and chat with them, which allowed me ample time to memorize all the muscle names, exercise routines, etc. When I was 13 years old I entered my first bodybuilding competition. Back in those days there was a 13-17 year old teenage class. Of course I got last, as all the 17 year olds crushed me, but I was hooked. Through the years, I did spend a lot of time in a variety of organized sports including football, wrestling and track. The bodybuilding efforts I was putting in did carry over to the other sports as I wasn’t the biggest and strongest guy without weight training. The increased strength, flexibility and endurance I had paid dividends. This was one facet I really enjoyed about bodybuilding, the amount of work I put into it, was what I got out of it, hard work equals success. I continued to compete over the years, and have won something like 18 contests along the way including many state, and regional titles, and even a national title. I also have worked with a number of athletes from differing backgrounds and continue to do so. I still train extremely hard, and try to practice what I preach. I have been fortunate through the years to work with some very smart people like Dr Serrano, and others. I have always made it a goal to seek out the smartest people, and try to learn the most I can from them. Nutrition is a passion of mine that I love to share with others. There are many things about my program that do not necessarily agree with mainstream theory, but you will see that the philosophies I have are rooted in fact, and not fiction. You will learn that saturated fats aren’t all that bad for you, neither is dietary cholesterol, and many other nutritional truths along the way that you can apply to how you eat for better results.   • Dorian has won 6 Mr. Olympia's in a row. he set new standards in size as the the first Mr, OLYMPIA at 250 lbs to have a body condition with super low body fat and very high muscle density. He is the biggest of the professional bodybuilders and when beside him makes all other bodybuilders look small. His nickname is the 'Shadow'. Dorian Andrew Mientjez Yates was born April 19, 1962 in England. Dorian was raised in Hurley, in rural Staffordshire. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Birmingham, Britain's second largest city. During these times, Dorian got himself into trouble, and was sentenced to six months at Whatton Youth Detention Centre. It was here that Dorian earned an instant reputation as the strongest and fittest of Whatton's 300 inmates. This gave him new respect for himself. Whatton was the wake up call for Dorian. If he did not do something, he would end up in and out of prison all of his life. Dorian resolved that he would not be back. Born in Hurley, Staffordshire, near Birmingham, England, Yates started working out in 1983. The man dubbed “The Shadow” (by FLEX Editor-in-Chief Peter McGough) shone a new light of awareness onto training methods with his brief but very high-intensity workouts. After some muscle victories in England – 1985 Novice Championships and 1988 British Championships – Yates visited New York for the 1990 Night of Champions and, in his pro debut, he took second to Mohamed Benaziza. The next year, he returned to win the contest. In 1991, Yates was the runner-up at the Olympia to Lee Haney, who duly won his eighth record-setting Sandow and the retired. From 1992 through 1997, Yates dominated the sport’s highest title. In 1994, he overcame a torn biceps to win the crown. In 1997, his most valiant victory came when he tore a triceps three weeks prior to the contest, but still battled on to triumph. Due to the injury, Yates was forced to retire, with a pro record of 15 wins and two second-place finishes. Yates may well be the bodybuilder that most aspiring trainees can best identify with because of his blue-collar roots, dogged determination and quiet confidence. His book, co-written by Peter McGough, is titled A Warrior’s Story – a perfect appellation for his competitive days for the Brit with no quit. Today, Yates still lives in Birmingham, where he is part owner of the supplement company Dorian Yates Ultimate Formulas, and he is still seen regularly at the main stateside contests.     Andrew is one of the World’s most sought after rehab professionals for athletes. Before becoming a Physiotherapist he was a member of the Australian Youth Baseball Team and played in the Inaugural Junior World Series, he was also selected to the Australian All Highs Schools Cricket Team. Graduating from La Trobe University in 1994 as a Physiotherapist he began working with Sports Medicine Victoria alongside leading shoulder specialist surgeons, medical professionals and being involved in clinical research. It was here that his unique approach to strength and shoulder rehabilitation for Bench Press pain began to form.

    A pursuit of excellence in spinal care ran parallel to the shoulder work and he undertook post-graduate education with the McKenzie Institute International, moving to the USA in 1995 Andrew was licensed as a Physical Therapist and passed his Credentialing Examination in the McKenzie Spinal Method in 1996. Returning to Australia Andrew graduated with a Masters Degree from The University of Melbourne in 2004 where his major study was in the resolution of Intervertebral Disc Injuries. A unique passion for strength training and science has been the basis of the protocols for rehabilitation that he has developed producing a model of both shoulder and spinal rehab based in the strength sciences.

    Personally Andrew demonstrates his own commitment to strength and size where he began as an 85Kg athlete and has transformed himself into 140Kg competitor over the years. Andrew has worked all over the globe including Australia, USA, New Zealand, South America and the Middle East. He now consults to athletes via Skype to all countries. Andrew had advised and consulted with a diverse range of athletes including members of the Australian Cricket Team, Major League Baseball, Bodybuilders, various football codes, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors, MMA, and athletes in all Strength Sports.   • Ed Coan widely regarded throughout the powerlifting world as the greatest powerlifter of all time. Throughout his active career in international powerlifting competition Ed Coan has set over 71 world records in powerlifting. He became the lightest person to cross the 2,400 lb. barrier in the powerlifting total (a sum of three lifts: the deadlift, bench, and squat). He set an all-time powerlifting record total at 2,463 pounds, even though at the time he was not in the heaviest weight class. Ed is still acknowledged and regarded as a legend in powerlifting and spends much of his time mentoring young lifters coming into the sport.
