    Takeaways:

Raising children is a collective responsibility involving parents, teachers, and communities. Love is an action word; it's essential to demonstrate love through actions, not just words. A child's success is influenced by their parents' attitudes and the environment they create. Parents must believe in their child's potential and provide a supportive learning environment. Your attitude shapes your experiences; it's more crucial than the events themselves. Effective parenting involves teaching children essential life skills and encouraging them to be lifelong learners.

  • John Foster is an author, executive, angel investor, and lifelong student of markets, John’s career failed its way through process engineering, operations, business management, M&A, and corporate strategy; finally failing big enough to exit. He now teaches kids the lowdown on business and entrepreneurship, hoping they will fail bigger and sooner.

John discusses the transformative approach of Middle School MBA, a curriculum designed to teach middle school students advanced business and economic concepts. He challenges traditional educational methods, questioning why students aren't leaving high school with a solid grasp of subjects like calculus or business principles, and highlights the need for a curriculum that prepares them for real-world applications. He believes in confronting failure as a vital part of learning, encouraging students to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks. The conversation delves into the significance of fostering critical thinking and resilience in students, ultimately aiming to make learning more relevant and engaging.

    Takeaways:

The traditional educational system often prioritizes the needs of teachers over the students. Students should be equipped to understand complex subjects like business and economics from a young age. Failure is an essential part of learning, and students should be encouraged to confront it. By using innovative teaching methods, we can make business principles accessible to middle schoolers. Empowering teachers to teach advanced concepts can lead to better student engagement and understanding. Resilience and perseverance are key traits that students need to develop for lifelong success.

  • Today I wanted to share with you my 1st AI generated podcast.

Why do this? I wanted to see what was possible and if it in anyway will be helpful for me and you in the future.

I used https://notebooklm.google - added my website and details of the last few Education on Fire podcasts and asked it to create a recap show for you.

It produced a 23 minute episode and created it in less than 5 minutes. It has 2 hosts and they discuss insights and takeaways from the last few podcasts.

Let me know what you think. Does it share value and key takeaways? Is the dialogue engaging and are you able/willing to listen to it all?

This like all AI is a tool and I'm not sure how or when I will use it again but as a first experiment I think it does at pretty impressive job!

  • Douglas Robbins is a passionate writer and author, he discovered the power of words at a young age. Fuelled by a deep connection to language, he dedicated himself to writing and has authored five captivating books. Douglas also has a podcast for seekers looking to improve themselves and the world.

The discussion between Mark Taylor and Douglas Robbins tackles the essential question of what education should truly encompass in the 21st century.Douglas shares his conviction that traditional education systems often fail to address the emotional and psychological needs of students, leaving them ill-prepared for adulthood. He articulates a vision of education that fosters individualism and creativity, suggesting that schools should serve as environments where children can explore their identities and passions. Through personal anecdotes, Robbins illustrates how emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in one's ability to succeed in life, stressing that a well-rounded education must include lessons on handling emotions, relationships, and personal finances. By highlighting the disconnect between educational practices and the real-world skills needed for success, Robbins challenges listeners to rethink their views on what constitutes valuable knowledge and encourages a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to teaching.

    Takeaways:

Education should focus on emotional intelligence and personal growth, not just academic skills. Children often struggle with navigating emotions, and schools should teach emotional awareness skills. Individuality in education is crucial; each child has unique strengths and interests. • Great buildings need a connection to the outdoors, one that is only achieved through the use of glass. Uncontrolled sunlight causes glare and overheating that can make an otherwise beautiful space painful to be in. New building energy codes can block your way. So Dr. Doug Milburn of Advanced Glazings Ltd created Solera® a line of highly insulating light diffusing glass.

What you should consider about Daylighting Education.

Daylighting done well produces visual comfort. Glare is eliminated. Light intensity is even. Eyes never strain to reveal detail in a space.Daylighting done well doesn’t compromise the thermal efficiency of a building envelope. With the right product, daylighting can actually enhance thermal efficiency.Daylighting done well permits sunlight to penetrate deep within a space, not merely along its perimeter. Glare caused by the sharp contrast between light and dark is eliminated, creating well-lit interiors for occupants.Daylighting done well comes in the form of insulated translucent glazings that provide the highest thermal performance requirements with a very small environmental footprint.Daylighting done well should not necessitate the use of costly passive daylighting controls such as interior blinds or exterior sunshades.

Dr. Doug Milburn is the founder of Advanced Glazings Ltd. He talks to me about his knowledge and passion to create the best possible environment for students to learn. We discuss how this can be achieved and the technology available with his product Solera.

  • This is a recording from 2018 with John Coe. He shares his educational experiences, views and involvement with the National Association for Primary Education since 1980. John sadly passed away earlier this year and I wanted to share this conversation so you can hear the essence of NAPE and their continued support for primary education.

This is my celebration and commemoration of John who has influenced me greatly.

John Coe began teaching in Essex. After primary headships, first of a small rural school and then of an urban school serving an underprivileged community; he joined the West Riding of Yorkshire authority as Inspector of Schools. His second local authority appointment extended over 16 years as Senior Adviser to Oxfordshire. In 1984 he moved into Higher Education as Course Leader of the PGCE Primary Course at the London Institute of Education. A later move to Oxford Brookes University involved him in research and both initial and in-service education. He is a Fellow of the University and a founding member of NAPE.

  • Follow Jelly Bean on her exciting adventures as a fourth-grader facing challenges that resonate with children of her age. From navigating friendships and family dynamics to discovering the complexities of life, Jelly Bean’s journey is filled with valuable life lessons.

Amy Meislin Pollack, a retired teacher, parent and grandparent, highlights how to raise happy children, how to talk to them about difficult topics and how to help them face challenges like bullying, low-self esteem, friendship, popularity, death, race, drugs, alcohol, feeling neglected and family issues.

Ever since she was in fourth grade – back in 1960 – Amy was writing and telling stories about a character named Jelly Bean. She never stopped telling those stories, sharing them with her students over a teaching career that spanned 40+ years. She shared them with her three children when they were younger – and then with her seven grandchildren. Now her stories have been made available to everyone with the recent publishing of two coming-of-age books intended for middle-graders, The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean.

The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean are the stories of a fourth-grader who faces challenges that just about all children her age can recognize. Her parents don’t approve of her favorite friend in the whole world. She has trouble getting along with the brother who is closest in age to her. The uncle she loves so much is about to marry the most awful woman she could ever imagine, and the girl who used to be her best friend has turned on her. Jelly Bean faces these and other stumbling blocks, including: the difficulties in achieving and maintaining popularity and how important having certain friends should be to her; difficulties inherent in relationships with various friends and family members; and learning how to make decisions on her own. In these first two books of my middle-grade series, Jelly Bean comes to understand that much of life is trial and error, and that the only constant in life is that it is always changing.

  • Phyllis Leavitt has worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. Her focus today is on her latest book, America in Therapy: A New Approach to Hope and Healing for a Nation in Crisis.

'When I became a psychotherapist, I never imagined I would one day be entering a “political” arena. But the more I worked with widespread family dysfunction and its horrifying legacy of pain and violence, the more I realized that the greatest threat to our survival as a country and as a species is our declining mental health.

I knew that what we have learned about healing family violence can and must be applied to healing America. I felt compelled to leave the confines of my office and speak to a broader audience. I wanted to share my message of urgency to get ourselves on a path of healing, and I wanted to share a message of Hope that we can restore ourselves to Safety, Peace, and Love by healing the wounds we have suffered and the wounds we have inflicted that keep a cycle of violence going. I wrote America in Therapy for all those hungry for this message.'
