Mientras nos preparamos para la segunda mitad del año de El Sonido: Cancioneros, abrimos los archivos oficiales de KEXP para revisitar algunas de las sesiones Live on KEXP más memorables de artistas latinoamericanos que han pasado por nuestros estudios.
Durante las próximas semanas, Cancioneros se convierte en una máquina del tiempo. Cada episodio recupera una sesión histórica y la entrevista completa que la acompañó, para volver a escuchar las canciones y las conversaciones que ayudaron a contar la historia de la música latinoamericana en KEXP.
Comenzamos con Bomba Estéreo, una banda fundamental en la historia del canal. El Sonido: Cancioneros traveled to Mexico City to meet Gloory Hole, one of the most direct, noisy, and provocative bands in Latin America's new alternative music scene.

Este episodio de El Sonido: Cancioneros fue grabado en la Ciudad de México, en los camarines del festival Vive Latino, para hablar con una de las figuras más importantes de la música popular latinoamericana y del pop y rock en español: el colombiano Juanes.
Lo que más nos sorprendió durante esta conversación fue descubrir cuán obsesivo melómano es realmente. El compositor y guitarrista nos confesó su profundo fanatismo por las sesiones Live on KEXP y nos contó que pasa horas descubriendo nuevos artistas y escenas de distintos rincones del mundo a través de nuestra comunidad.
Para su cancionero, Juanes reflexiona sobre las músicas que construyeron su identidad artística: desde Metallica, Sepultura y Judas Priest hasta leyendas del rock latinoamericano como Soda Stereo, Café Tacuba y Charly García, pasando por el vallenato de Carlos Vives y los tangos de Carlos Gardel.

This episode of El Sonido: Cancioneros was recorded in Mexico City, backstage at the Vive Latino festival, to speak with one of the biggest stars in Latin American popular music and Spanish-language pop and rock: Colombian artist Juanes.
What surprised us the most during this conversation was discovering just how obsessive of a music fan he really is. The songwriter and guitarist confessed his deep love for Live on KEXP sessions and told us he spends hours discovering new artists and scenes from around the world through our community.
For his cancionero, Juanes reflects on the music that shaped his artistic identity: from Metallica, Sepultura, and Judas Priest to Latin American rock legends like Soda Stereo, Café Tacuba, and Charly García, as well as the vallenato of Carlos Vives and the tangos of Carlos Gardel.
Throughout the episode, Juanes also reveals that he is currently working on a new metal project alongside his solo career — and that the project is already well underway.

El Sonido: Cancioneros regresa en 2026.
Un podcast original de KEXP conducido por Albina Cabrera donde artistas de América Latina y de distintas escenas globales comparten el cancionero de sus vidas: las canciones que los formaron como personas y creadores.
En 2023, Cancioneros comenzó explorando cómo la música migra a través de fronteras, idiomas y generaciones. En 2024, la serie se sumergió en los 50 discos que marcaron a Kurt Cobain y su vínculo con el rock latinoamericano. En 2025, adoptó un formato semanal con playlists dinámicas y conversaciones íntimas con artistas de América Latina y su diáspora.
Para la temporada 2026, el proyecto expande aún más sus fronteras sonoras, incorporando voces de distintas escenas globales que exploran tanto sus raíces latinoamericanas como sus influencias internacionales. Este año viajamos por Ciudad de México y Austin para encontrarnos con artistas en sus propias comunidades, y esto recién empieza.

Launched in 2023, Cancioneros began by exploring how music migrates across borders, languages, and generations. Albina Cabrera dives into Raw Power by The Stooges, Surfer Rosa by Pixies, and Dying For It by The Vaselines as she takes you on a journey through modern Latin American rock. In the inaugural chapter of El Cancionero de Kurt, we set the musical coordinates to understand the influence of Cobain, Nirvana, and their songbook on the rock culture of the continent. From the protopunk seeds of The Stooges with their Raw Power, leading us to the development of Colombian rock in Bogotá in the late 90s; to the university exchange of the Pixies' leader in Puerto Rico that led to the composition of much of Surfer Rosa, an iconic album of Latin American indie rock; and finally to the Scottish gem The Vaselines, a band popularized by Kurt Cobain's fanaticism and covers by Nirvana. Their influence reached Monterrey, Mexico, where the stoner rock band Los Mundos recorded the only Spanish version of 'Molly’s Lips', 'Los Labios de Molly'.

Xiuhtezcatl Martínez es un artista, activista y poeta de raíces mexicanas de Xochimilco que creció en Colorado, Estados Unidos. Su obra —entre el hip hop, la poesía hablada y la música con conciencia social— ha estado marcada por los movimientos de resistencia indígena y ambiental que moldearon su identidad desde muy joven.En este episodio especial, Xiuhtezcatl comparte el trasfondo de TONATIUH, su álbum más reciente, grabado en Xochimilco, el territorio de sus ancestros. La conversación aborda su conexión binacional entre el norte y el sur de Abya Yala, el rol de la música como herramienta de resistencia y la importancia de cantar en náhuatl por primera vez.

The conversation explores his binational identity between North and South Abya Yala, the role of music as a form of resistance, and the significance of singing in Nahuatl for the first time.
