Sustainability is about making sure that your company has the resources it needs to thrive today while ensuring that you have the resources you’ll need for tomorrow. When starting your sustainability journey, the first step is conducting a materiality assessment, which helps in identifying what's most important to your company and what will have the biggest impact.

One effective way to perform a materiality assessment is to conduct a survey that includes both internal and external stakeholders. Asking investors, customers and employees what issues are most important to them when it comes to sustainability can help determine your path forward.

Sustainability also comes into play with automation. Automation can help in reducing waste of resources, whether that's packaging waste, product waste or footprint. Utilizing automation can increase manufacturing capability which decreases errors while shrinking the footprint the customer needs. This results in less material waste and a reduction in energy consumed in the process.

Investing time, money and resources in sustainability initiatives feels like a big undertaking but it’s made up of small actions taken together to build something bigger. Start with a small issue and work up from there. The sustainability journey is not about finding a quick solution, it's about identifying, step by step, incremental improvements that your company can make that moves you in the right direction.

Supply chain is an integral part of any manufacturing business and needs to be considered when planning an automation project. Thinking about the objectives of your operation and how output and processes will change will help you identify where supply chain will be impacted. How supply chains operate has been changed by the implementation of automation technology. Incorporating new technologies into your manufacturing process can automate the supply chain process and connect it to IT systems. This provides more stability, less room for errors and a more efficient, cost-effective supply chain.

Identifying suppliers that fit into strategic growth plans is an important part of the automation implementation process. While some suppliers will be able to grow with your business, others may no longer suit your needs and new ones that fit your future business model will need to be considered.

Technology can be utilized to drive improved process with key supply partners. The use of automation technology provides more data from the operational and supply chain side which helps businesses effectively manage the supply chain. Sharing this data with suppliers is also valuable and will allow them to support your supply chain better.

  • Welcome to Enabling Automation! The first episode of this season 2 is "The foundation of automation". Join our host, Simon Drexler, as he discusses with special guest, Ben Hope.

When looking to start automation for the first time or looking at levelling up the amount of automation in your operation, the first thing to look at is ROI. Does it make sense for your business financially? For small or mid-sized businesses looking to start their automation journey or scale up, the biggest barrier is cost. Assembly automation is highly customized and costly. Are there areas of your assembly that can utilize a standardized platform? Starting with conveyance as your primary platform can help with standardization. When you standardize one piece of technology, your understanding increases and can help speed up the adoption of automation in your organization.

The most impactful choice you make when designing a system is the foundation of the assembly process. Conveyance is the first step in the design of any system as it brings the product through the assembly process and can easily be built upon. Starting with conveyance gives you a better understanding of the process and helps build a better automation system with stronger performance.

Building familiarity and understanding of the process has become easier in recent years. Hardware emulation and simulation tools are on the rise. Industry 4.0 made way for the concept of the digital twin. The digital twin enables engineers to conceptualize and simulate processes and makes implementing continuous improvements and optimizing processes easier.

The idea that automation is only for big corporations has started to change. Standardization is key to opening the door for more businesses to start their automation journey. Starting with conveyance will allow your business to begin the automation process and leave room to scale up.

In this monthly podcast series, join industry leaders from across ATS as they share and discuss the latest industry trends, new innovations, and more! ATS is an industry-leading automation solutions provider to many of the world's most successful companies.

When you talk about identifying the type of automation needed for a business, the future of your automation depends on what stage you are at currently in your automation journey. What phase are you on? Where do you want to go, are there any configurable or customizable needs? What is your end goal and what machine and accomplish all your requirements in the most economical way? All these questions will configure what your automation looks like in your business.

Before jumping into a customized or commercially available automation solution, it is important to understand the requirements, stakes, technical requirements, building requires as a foundation to what you can do, and then from there explore the solutions on the market that are standardized before looking at custom making a machine. There is always a level of customization for each process, however, the extent of the customization costs time and money. Explore the standardized solutions on the market first and see how well those examples suit the needs of your business.

The solution to your automation needs does not always have to be custom and is not always fully automated. There are semi-automated, fully automated, and then custom solutions that are available and can be implemented based on your current circumstances and requirements.

How do you define success? Before you start automating, think about what you are trying to achieve. What are you trying to have this system do? This typically involved high MOEE systems or reduced floorspace and best delivery. Then after the machine is built how do you keep that success going after the machines is ramping up? All of these are key points to think about on your automation journey.

There also case specific elements that are a factor in implementing success that need to be considered. Maintenance staff, level of comfort with mechanical cams as well as company location will all effect the type of automation you should implement. When it comes to designing the automation, you must think about the setup, identifying the gaps in either knowledge or capability to set yourself up on the right path to continue the success automation brings.

When it comes to the resources for automation you will need the product details, how the products delivered and what the process to assemble the products. The second step would involve a business case. The important thing to keep in mind is to have a clear end goal for what you are trying to accomplish. Identify what your needs and wants are for the design. Automation requires a specific product plan that includes an in-depth design for automation. When you are looking at the product with the goal to automate the product, also think about that parts that are unique. There is always a unique element to automation. There are two levels of uniqueness. The first level of a unique part would include parts that are commercially available. The second level of uniqueness is parts that require custom design.

It is important to start the conversations about the components of automation and the assembly line as soon as possible. Start thinking about your products and what components are involved in making it. Start the conversations early with automation experts to hear more about what resources are required to start your journey.

There are many factors to consider when you start your automation journey. In this episode, industry expert Blair de Verteuil and Simon Drexler talk about what to know before you start implementing automation. Two of the biggest pieces of advice to keep in mind before you start is don’t be intimidated by the automation and understand the problem you are trying to solve.

What is your reason for implementing automation? Automation can help reduce costs, improve quality, increase productivity, increase product quality, and it can assist in regulatory issues. You can also implement automation to because you have an interest in it. Having a clear goal in mind when you are starting to look at automation is also something that will help you be able to reach your goal effectively. While using an automated system, it is also easier to see statistics and measure outputs in real time.

Look at some of the big industries with spectacular scales of automation. It is important to know that they started somewhere. When you introduce the initial piece of automation into your business, it is easy to scale up and add on from there. Before you start, reach out to other companies that have introduced automation into their business. Also reach out to industry experts to talk about the projects and get an idea about the kinds of projects that they have worked on before.

  • Welcome to Enabling Automation! The fourth episode of this podcast series is "What can you automate?" Join our host, Simon Drexler, as he discusses with special guests, Mike Healy and Klaus Werner.

How well do you know your process? When thinking about what you can automate, you must think about the process of the automation. Is the product itself designed for automation? What steps can you pull out from your process to automate? It is important to have a roadmap to automation. Having a roadmap can help you know your process as well as, what aspects of your product you need to change to help you in the long run.

Doing a process once is different from doing it millions of times. The journey you take to get it to that repeatable process is important. The number one thing a customer must think about is the design of their product. Having a product that is not designed for automated assembly can increase the cost and make the process more complex. Ensure you know your product when thinking about automating your process. Understanding the product and design and having a clear plan to what you want to accomplish is key.

  • Welcome to Enabling Automation! The second episode of this podcast series is "Debunking automation myths". Join our host, Simon Drexler, as he discusses with special guest, Ian Menzies.

There are several myths that exist in the manufacturing world around industrial automation and how we progress and implement technology into our manufacturing processes. We're going to talk about debunking some of those automation myths. There are five major myths we will be discussing. They are: automation is replacing factory jobs, automation is too expensive to implement, automation is not scalable, my business is too small to automate, automation won't work with a legacy factory or in my current process.

Anything can be done if there is a desire to get it done as well as finding the right partner. With automation, you can add value to jobs, create new jobs with new specialization. New technologies and demand requirements have created a need for automation as it utilizes production and increase productivity. Automation is all about staying competitive in the market. There are jobs that people don't want to do anymore or jobs that are not safe for people to do. That is where automation steps in. We can give those types of jobs to the machine and therefore create better jobs for people as a new skillset is required. With a new skillset comes new skilled trades that install, design, and build the equipment and support the machines for its entire lifetime.

Simon Drexler is our automation expert. He has been part of the automation world for about 15 years in a variety of different roles from application engineering to business leadership. Currently, Simon is the General Manager of the Products Group inside ATS Automation.

Ian Menzies is the Engineering Director within ATS Industrial Automation group. He has been in the automation industry for 15 years in a variety of roles from systems engineering and project management to where he is today, leading all the ATS engineering groups within Industrial Automation.
