We are joined by Rachel Power, CEO of The Patients Association, and Professor Partha Kar, Type I Diabetes and Technology Lead at NHS England. In this conversation youâll hear about the danger of assuming that minoritised communities donât want to engage, or that older people are not digitally skilled. We also talk about the nuanced approach needed when working with carers, and finally some practical nuggets of wisdom around communication channels for engagement.

Welcome to this weekâs episode of the podcast, where we examine not just the pitfalls but also the potential of data in the realm of health equity. Our experts this week are Maxine Mackintosh - data guru and Co-Director of One HealthTech and leading light Rony Arafin, Director of Insights at the British Heart Foundation, Deputy Chair of the NHS Chief Data & Analytics Officers Network and former CEO of the Association of Professional Healthcare Analysts.
In this thought-provoking conversation we discuss the real-world impact of inequity in the data world, why disaggregating data by ethnicity isnât necessarily all itâs cracked up to be, and also how AI can help us uncover inequity, rather than exacerbating it.
As you would expect, we have a whole host of resources below mentioned by our data-driven experts to supplement the discussion:
Health Equity Assessment Toolkit
The Data Observatory
Data Science for Health Equity
Inequity in cardiovascular health
Hidden in Plain Sight â Reconsidering the Use of Race Correction in Clinical Algorithms
Research funding bias
Racial bias in genomics

In this episode we kick off our deep dive into the 10 principles of the Equity Charter. This principle in many ways is the most important and impactful one in terms of effecting lasting change: our own individual responsibility to actively champion equity. Whilst the episode doesnât focus on the digital health sector specifically, it takes us through the foundations for change that are universal.
Here to guide us as our experts are Joy Warmington, CEO of brap and Roger Kline, Workforce Consultant and academic researcher at Middlesex University.
You will hear Joy mention the works of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde, and you can also listen to the brap podcast, The Quiet Revolution.
Roger also mentions the report he wrote called No More Tick Boxes which highlights the inequity in NHS recruitment for those with protected characteristics.

Welcome to the introductory episode of the Equity Charter podcast. The Equity Charter is a social movement to promote equity within the digital health sector in order to narrow the health inequality gap. Our Charter consists of 10 principles and some accompanying actions, for any individuals or organisations working in this space to make tangible change.
In this series we will be doing a deep dive into each principle in turn with a selection of subject matter experts sharing their expertise and perspectives.
In this episode, youâll meet all three co-founders: Ayesha Rahim, NHS psychiatrist and CCIO, Victoria Betton, Director for Digital, Data and AI, and Hassan Chaudhury, Digital Propositions Lead for Medica, who will tell you why they started the movement and how it all came about. Youâll also hear from our special guest Jon Hoeksma, CEO of Future Health Intelligence who was instrumental in the launch of the Charter in 2024.
