  • In the Season 2 finale episode, the show was to investigate the available different solutions for medical aid for an individual that is self-employed a freelancer or an artist. This is after realising that the true reality of things is that most people do not have medical aid and are grossly uninsured and therefore are not prepared for any serious medical emergency. The artist is not prepared for any incident that could lead them to be hospitalized or requiring emergency medical assistance..Our guests went through different options that are available that an individual can go onto the market and purchase in order to provide adequate insurance for different situations, these solutions can be suitable for different individuals depending on age and available income for spending on medical insurance. We go through some of the industry issues that cause poor coverage to the low-income sections of the population and the steps the government to regulate the industry.

We asked various questions, such as can someone overpay for medical aid. We investigate different products currently serving the market, including hospital plants as well as medical aids. We delve deeper into these products and demystify concepts such as gap covers, chronic diseases and also the limits of each product. Which is the best? • On todays episode, we discussed business in the music industry with the self-made Rapper and Independent Record Label Owner, Aewon Wolf. Looking back at the evolution of his illustrious career in music - a career more in the mould of Tech N9ne in approach than your standard signed artist music deal - we discuss some of the mistakes that music artists usually made regarding contracts and ownership of masters. We specifically look at how hard it is for an up and coming artist in the middle of the music industry to get their legal affairs in order and how they usually fall victim to unscrupulous record labels - or as Aewon calls them; music industry banks.

In this very open-hearted discussion, we cover the challenge of monetization within the music industry and study how he has built great relationships and loyalty that have led to working with great brands over a sustainable period of time. Aewon Wolf reflects on how he decided to review the way he looks at life and started to determine what he wanted from life and music and what he values in life compared to a normal stereotype of a rapper. He describes the benefits of having your own record label and how it differs from working and promoting other different acts. If you're a new musician in the industry, this is one of the most important conversations that you will need to listen too before embarking on a career in music.

  • In our first episode of 2022, we interviewed the Managing Director of 22Seven Budgeting Mobile App, Jikku Joseph. After a prosperous December period for many of our listeners, we try to assist people to answer the age old Finance for Hippies question, "Where did my money go?"

We aim to understand the nature of the expenditures people mostly spend their money on. The aim is to assist the people in better management of their personal finances whilst focusing specifically on looking at small expenditures that usually go under the radar and people consider insignificant but accumulate to a large amount at the end of the month.

From a recent survey we ran with our listeners, we found that most individuals find it difficult to monitor and account for each and every expenditure in their daily lives. This contributes to issues such as the low savings rate in South Africa and spending on frivolous items. The general lack of financial literacy in a large segment of the youth in South Africa has also led to poor financial decisions.

22Seven Budgeting Mobile App provides great features which include ability to set targets and forecasts, the ability to monitor your budget for a specific expenditure, all designed to see where your money is going.

  • Episode 7 started as an opportunity to invite a guest to discuss online entrepreneurship and hacks for creatives and other small business entrepreneurs to make passive incomes online. We were able to invite Adewale Adejumo - one of the most sort after South African eCommerce speakers and entrepreneurs on this topic. However, in true hippie fashion, the conversation took some surprise turns early on as we wound up discussing athletics, WWE wrestling, Adewale’s music taste as well as his perspective on human genetic modification. When we eventually decided to get serious after about 25 minutes of good banter, we finally got going in a more practical direction to unpack his journey into the rough and tough world of eCommerce business in Africa.

As he tells it himself, as a boy, he believed that he would be the director of a science institute one day. So, early on in his career he got a BSc in Genetics and an MSc in Plant Pathology - until he ran short of money for his studies and like a well-seasoned mixtape rapper, he began selling Chinese electronic tablets from the boot of his car in 2010. This small business proved so lucrative that it led him to doing a postgraduate diploma in Marketing, Finance, Banking and Investment. In 2013, he then took a leap of faith and founded Zasttra.com – which went on to become one of South Africa’s fastest growing online retail stores. He was young, black and trailblazing. From building Zasttra came with many accolades and opportunities, such as speaking on the TEDxCapeTown stage, guest speaking at Google Start-Up Grind and acknowledgement as one of the 100 Young Independents in South Africa amongst many other media accomplishments. So we know your question: Why in the world in this prestigious gentleman sitting in the same room to do a podcast with 2 struggle rappers named TeethSwag & Ndarkie. Surely he is better than this?

Outside of having a long running friendship with podcast host TeethSwag, Adewale also has a genuine inside story about all the realities one faces in doing online business in Africa. Having just launched his second ecommerce platform named Dropstore which simplifies online business trade for South Africans, he wanted to use this opportunity to share his story, insights, challenges and expertise with budding online entrepreneurs of the future. So, with over 10 years’ experience building leading eCommerce platforms in the tough African digital marketing space - he is armed with amazing online business hacks for this episode that will help you gain digital relevance, sustainability and profitability on the online world

  • Episode 6 finds our hosts TeethSwag and Ndarkie yet again completely outclassed on the microphone as they’re joined by another caliber of guest beyond their intellectual pay-grade. Today we're joined by Nelspruit born Dineo Tsamela who leads a new wave of young and tech savvy South African financial industry professionals who are making it their business to educate and inform the African masses about better ways of managing their money. The self-confessed bookworm is no stranger to debt herself since early in her career she found herself overwhelmed with debt and no real plan as to how to get herself out of the financial distress that most young people seem to find themselves in. So she did what any young lady in her early twenties would do – moved to Joburg and took a four year break from all social activities, cutting down her spending to her most basic living expenses and proceeded to kick life’s financially draining butt. The best thing of all? She survived and lived to share her tail of survival with hippies all around the world!.

Now far removed from the earlier stresses that slowed her down earlier on in her career, today Dineo finds herself professionally stationed as a Communication Manager of Global Markets in the banking sector as well operating as a sort-after media speaker, columnist and panelist on all matters relating to money and investing in South Africa. In between founding her labour of love financial literacy blog Piggy Banker, freelancing for City Press and The Sunday Times as a business columnist and authoring her own ebook “A Step-by-Step Guide to Paying off Your Debt”, Dineo also somehow finds time to be a mom and an avid traveler.

In the next hour and a half, TeethSwag and Ndarkie attempt their first fully sober episode as they deep dive into her life journey so far, her love and passion for the arts as well as some critical pointers she gives our hosts on how to move from being in debt to being a smarter investor on a hippies budget.

  • We're back to wrap up season 1 and what a journey it has been! Episode 5 is finally here and its available everywhere. According to TeethSwag, this Finance for Hippies episode is also the first classic episode (aka 5 mics, aka XXL) as our guest Morwesi Ramonyai gives our podcast hosts the 411 and honest hard truth on "How to Adult with your Finances". Outside of being one of the coolest, humble and funniest people you will ever meet, at her young age Morwesi holds an Executive MBA from the University of Cape Town and is a trailblazing impact entrepreneur with a keen passion for developing ideas and projects that create effective social impact. Her expertise extend to the energy and fintech space where she spends her days running her company Borena Energy.

Over uncapped sips of Krone Borealis Bru, Morwesi finally brought some class to our ratchet podcast set as she took us through her journey from huge financial debt and being blacklisted - to becoming the person Ndarkie refers too as "a fully fledged adult". Through experiencing many losses and wins in her entrepreneurship journey, this interview is really special as she really does not hold back on insights and pockets of excellence gained from her years of experience. As someone who no longer engages too much with the media, she really used this platform to openly discuss a range of topics - from the false fantasy of life as an entrepreneur, personal self-worth when it comes to money, all the way to proving that even super anarchist TeethSwag benefited from having a job.

Not sure if we're qualified to use the words 'Hard Hitting Interview" when it comes to our content yet, but if we didn't come close this episode, I doubt that we ever will. Or maybe you just a hater ;-)

  • Another exiting episode of finance for hippies kicked off with Ndarkie and Teethswag. This time the elephant in the room was how “Mashonisa financed my exhibition”. For those who don’t know, In the South African townships a “Mashonisa” is usually an individual that gives small loans to people in the community – legally or illegally. They’re known as Loan Sharks in English. The studio guest for this week was none other than Tiffany Mentoor also known as T-Money; Arts administrator at Pro Helvetia South Africa, Chief Executive Officer at The Hidden Hand Studios, who also has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Witwatersrand.

Amongst many of the interesting topics dissected in this segment was how Tiffany managed to gain some sort of knowledge on the handling of her finances from a young age. In part, this was due to the fact that her parents were able to pass on that knowledge, and so a seed was planted in Tiffany on how to navigate around issues of finance within her own life and in her professional life.

Often with people involved within the creative sphere, it is often assumed that focus on the process of creating art is paramount to anything else. As a self-professed lover of administration, Tiffany gives us invaluable knowledge on how to reconcile creativity with sound administrative practices so you don’t end up going to your mashonisa for financial counsel. Learn more on how to create a good reputation for yourself and how to take some pointers from the corporate world that will help you in your capacity as a creative.

  • South African Hip Hop artist Gyre broke into the scene in 2017 with his culture shifting debut digital album titled Queernomics. Although still relatively new to the industry, the self-anointed "King of the Queers" knows a thing or 2 about breaking boundaries and turning his creative flair into a viable business opportunity and lifestyle. Business is often regarded as a very serious endeavor and very often art and artists are not recognized as being business orientated. However in these changing times artists are forced to examine the realm of business in order to make a living and survive in this capitalist system. In this episode of Finance for hippies, the duo of Teethswag and Ndarkie invite Sibonakaliso A.K.A Gyre who is a hip hop artist, entrepreneur and an activist of the LGBTI community. He has also contributed on one of the tracks for this podcast.

It is idealistic to think that one may be able to make their passion a business. Very often as the hosts of the show always say, it is “Art Over Money”. Gyre on this episode makes a very important statement on the fact that one cannot fight the urge to turn their passion into a business. He also makes the point that mentality is also very crucial when one seeks to use his or her passion into a workable business. So the question still remains, how do we turn our passions into businesses?

Many challenges arise when trying to achieve this goal such as the fact that a lot of the time when trying to do even the basics of business practices, such as quoting prices for shows, people are often very nonchalant and ignorant in recognizing art as a business. Artists themselves also make it difficult for themselves when they do not take their art professionally by actually recognizing that they are delivering a service.

This Episode of Finance for Hippies will definitely make you think about how to reconcile your art and passion with a few sound business practices.
