  • Sophie Herzog’s academic background has focused on biotechnology. This, together with her keen interest in sport and how the body can be trained to reach peak performance, was what led Olav Aleksander Bu to invite her to join the team at Santara as a Performance and Technology Analyst.

In this episode Sophie discusses the concept of allostatic load and its impact on athletes' performance. She shares her personal journey of experiencing ‘unexplained underperformance’ and how it led her to explore the topic.

The conversation highlights the importance of considering both physical and psychological stressors in an athlete's life and the energetic cost they impose. Sophie also emphasizes the need for athletes to have a balanced energy budget and be aware of the cumulative wear and tear of allostatic processes. The discussion provides valuable insights for athletes and coaches in understanding and managing allostatic load.

Sophie reflects on her experience of dealing with unexplained under performance as an endurance athlete and discusses the importance of managing allostatic load. She emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to addressing underperformance, considering factors such as nutrition, training intensity, sleep and emotional stress. Sophie also highlights the potential impact of hormonal fluctuations on female athletes and the need for further research in this area.

Sophie shares her personal strategies for managing stress, including journaling and disconnecting from devices during training. We also hear about her upcoming business, which aims to provide consulting and educational resources for athletes experiencing underperformance.

  • Regan Hollioake, Professional Triathlete from Australia, talks to us about her journey from competitive open water swimming to triathlon.

Regan discovered cycling as a strength after a standout performance at Busselton where she set the fastest ever age group female time. Living in a small town three hours north of Melbourne, she often trained alone but has more recently benefited from joining a training squad in Ballarat. We discuss her progression in running, from a 3:15 marathon to a 3:03 at IRONMAN Australia, despite not having a formal running background, and how she maintains a mindful approach to training volume to avoid injuries.

Regan’s debut as a professional athlete was at IRONMAN New Zealand, where she raced against notable competitors like Chelsea Sodaro and Els Visser. Despite initial doubts, she excelled and secured a fourth-place finish, validating her decision to go pro.

We discuss her challenging lead-up to IRONMAN Australia, where she competed and won the race despite suffering a broken rib from an accident in the pool and an ulcerated cornea.

Most recently Regan raced and won the full distance at Challenge Gunsan in Korea. Her next stop? Lake Placid and then the IRONMAN World Champs in Nice. She’ll definitely be one to watch out for.

Jay shares his expertise on the critical role of movement skills and tissue capacity in enhancing athletic performance and explains how athletes can develop the necessary skills and body preparation to achieve their goals and prevent injuries.

We discuss the pivotal importance of postural control and endurance for athletes involved in prolonged activities like cycling, running and swimming. Jay illustrates how maintaining consistent body positioning can maximize efficiency and minimize fatigue. We explore the limitations of traditional exercises and advocate for dynamic movements that bolster both strength and skill. Furthermore, Jay sheds light on the mechanics of running, emphasizing the importance of rotational control at the foot, ankle, hip and upper body to enhance performance and reduce injury risk. Practical tips and exercises, such as using rocker boards and resistance bands, are shared to help athletes improve their form and stability.

We focus on optimizing movement skills for efficiency, addressing common myths about muscle functionality and highlighting the importance of proper mechanics like triple extension. Jay underscores the need to address underlying movement issues rather than merely increasing training volume or intensity. Additionally, we explore the complexities of tissue adaptation and the critical role of plyometrics in building bone and ten

Tim chats to Dr Kate Baldwin of Valere Endurance about the psychological and physical processes of healing from an injury. We explore the complexities of injury recovery emphasizing the difficulty in managing expectations during the healing process. We discuss the misconception that pain and function improve simultaneously and linearly, and how this can lead to disappointment when progress doesn't match expectations. We highlight that while initial recovery may bring rapid improvement, progress often slows down, and setbacks can occur, which is a normal part of the healing journey.

We stress the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when dealing with fractures and other common injuries in endurance athletes, involving sports doctors, physiotherapists, coaches and nutritionists. Additionally, we consider the potential pitfalls of rushing back into activity and the consequences of reintroducing running too soon.
