  • Les Miserables – in lay terms “Les Mis” – is one of the most awarded and impactful musicals of the late 20th Century. Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, which was turned into a French concept album, and then translated into English and expanded upon for its London West End debut in 1985, the show opened on Broadway in 1987, and became an instant classic as audiences were captivated by the heart-wrenching dramas of the poor during the French Revolution, and especially by the bombastic, melodically haunting songs. Now, nearly 40 years after its debut, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine the Best Les Miserables Song!
Join host Eric Rezsnyak, panelists Curtis Creekmore and Joelle Boedecker, and Patreon sponsor Bob Erlenback as they explore the most memorable songs from one of the 20th Century's most enduring musicals.

  • 2023 was a newsworthy year for film. After three years of pandemic-induced cratering, the box office came roaring back thanks in part to the marketing and artistic triumph that was Barbenheimer. The year saw a slew of notable releases from directing legends and bold new voices that will make it one of the most competitive Oscar seasons in years. And after grueling months-long strikes, both the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA won major concessions from the studios, a good step for creators in the film industry going into the future.
There was clearly lots to celebrate when it came to movies this year. So join us as Great Pop Culture Debate panelists Brendan Hay, Eric Rezsnyak, Karissa Kloss, and Kevin Dillon share their favorite movies, as the Great Pop Culture Debate presents the Best Films of 2023!

  • There’s no question that television in 2023 was greatly impacted by the strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA, which brought Hollywood production to a halt from May until November. So for the first half of the year, we were well fed with quality shows worthy of the golden age of TV. For the back half, well…hope you like 90 minutes of “The Amazing Race” and international versions of CBS shows!
But still, there was great TV this year – and plenty of it. So podcast panelists Amma Marfo, Derek Mekita, Eric Rezsnyak, and Joelle Boedecker are here to share their favorite shows, both new and returning, as the Great Pop Culture Debate presents the Best TV of 2023!

  • It has been nearly 100 years since Macy’s launched its Thanksgiving Day Parade outside the department store’s flagship Herald Square location in 1924. Since then, it has become the world’s largest parade, and has delighted untold millions since NBC began to broadcast the event in 1952. For many families, it has become an annual tradition to watch the parade as they prepare their Thanksgiving feasts, the official unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. While many elements make the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade special, one of the most important are the giant balloons featuring iconic characters that have been a hallmark of the event since the late 1920s. Now, as the parade nears its centennial, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: what IS the Best Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon of all time?

  • They solve crimes and captivate our attention. Detectives on TV! Since at least the late 1930s, detectives have been a staple of television shows. Most are procedurals like the "Law & Order" contingent, a bunch are from prestige dramas a la "Sherlock," some are comedies (think "Monk" or “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), and some are even animated ("Inspector Gadget" counts!). But regardless, there's something intrinsically fascinating about watch brilliant minds crack cases in an hour or less. • The Aughts -- the years between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2009 -- were a tumultuous period, to say the least. Still, those difficult times produced some spectacular new works of American pop culture, including in the Broadway musical genre. A slew of shows introduced during that decade became monster smashes that still play on Broadway today, and many more made significant marks in the Broadway canon. • Horror has been embraced by the film industry almost since its beginnings. The moving image is ideally suited to evoke the chills and thrills inherent in the genre. And perhaps greater than any other genre, horror has evolved over the ensuing century, reinventing itself so that it continues to compel new audiences long after monsters and maniacs and demons lose their fright value over subsequent generations. Many of these horror properties have resonated so intensely, they've spawned long-running film franchises that have spawn new films over and over again, some going on for decades themselves. Now, the Great Pop Culture Debate podcast wants to consider those scare factories, as we determine the best horror film franchise of all time.
Listen as Host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelist Kate Racculia, and special guests alternative-drag icon Peaches Christ and screenwriter and journalist Kellee Terrell discuss and debate 16 of the most iconic horror film franchises of all time, ultimately naming the best of the best.
