  • Trump and his minions have inflamed the country with escalating deportation raids. In Los Angeles, the resistance has been fiercely fighting back and keeping ICE out of their communities. Trump has taken further steps by federalizing the California National Guard to protect federal buildings and aid in ICE operations. He’s also now deployed a battalion of U.S. marines. California’s political leadership is pushing back as well.

Scott talks with organizer Estuardo Mazariegos about what’s happening in the streets of Los Angeles.

  • Ellen Schrecker is the preeminent historian of McCarthyism/The Red Scare in America and we had a really great conversation with her about the resurgence of political repression today . . . Professor Schrecker argues that what we're seeing right now under the Trump administration, especially the attack on Palestine advocates on campuses, is already worse than the early Cold War years. We discussed how the two periods compare: what the motivation was (charges of communism and anti-semitism); the ways in which targeted groups, such as universities and unions, purged themselves before the government had to do it; how the resistance today is so much larger than it was in the 1950s; and what we can do to combat it.

    Bio//

Ellen Schrecker is professor emerita at Yeshiva University and has published extensively on McCarthyism in America, especially the red scare and the universities. Her books include:

. . . The Lost Promise: American Universities in the 1960s

. . . Cold War Triumphalism: Exposing the Misuse of History after the Fall of Communism (Editor).

  • There is a long history of industry heavy war profiteers like Lockheed Martin and Northrup Grumman having deep ties within elite political and military circles. This has led to trillions being spent on weapons manufacturing. With the rise of Silicon Valley and artificial intelligence (AI) in our society, we're seeing those same elites build out AI for military and geopolitical purposes.

In our latest, we talk with Project Censored and award-winning investigative journalist Peter Byrne about his groundbreaking 10-part exposĂ© on the dangerous militarization of artificial intelligence—and the profiteering that drives it.

  • The Stop Cop City campaign saw an evolution in protest and direct action. It brought together movements that spanned issues, political philosophies, strategic approaches and tactics. The state responded with unbridled violence (killing one forest defender) and harsh legal repression (charging 61 others with "domestic terrorism"). It saw coalitions of black led community groups, big environmental groups and anti-authoritarian direct action loosely join together to resist the state.

In a part two of two, Scott talks with Prof. Joseph Brown about the future of protest after the Stop Cop City moment. They discuss the status of the project, dive deep into the repression that forest defenders are facing and talk about the evolution of non-violence strategies.

  • May 24th is the 35th anniversary of the bombing of Earth First!ers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney.

To commemorate we're reposting our interview from last year with Earth First!'s Karen Pickett.

Here's the blurb from last year's episode:

On May 24, 1990, a car bomb ripped through environmental and labor organizer Judi Bari's car nearly killing her and her comrade Darryl Cherney. Bari and Cherney were part of Earth First's Headwaters campaign and had fought long and hard to stop clear-cutting redwood forests in Northern California by ravenous timber companies. They were organizing a campaign that summer called "Redwood Summer" that had planned to do mass action against logging. The F.B.I. and the Oakland police immediately arrested Bari and Cherney as the culprits in their own bombing. Judi Bari passed away from cancer in 1997. In 2002, Bari (posthumously) and Cherney won a $4.4 million lawsuit against the F.B.I. and the Oakland PD for violating their civil rights. May 24 is now an official holiday in the city of Oakland. In our latest episode, we talk with Earth First! organizer Karen Pickett (@KP4redwoods), a close friend and comrade of Bari and Cherney, about Earth First!, the Northern California timber wars, Judi Bari's role as environmental and labor organizer, the bombing and the subsequent lawsuit.

Bio//Karen Pickett has been a grassroots activist for over 40 years. She is a founder and Director of the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters, Biocentric Media Inc. and other organizations. She has been part of Earth First! for decades.

  • Donald Trump briefly tried to change "Veterans Day" to a Victory in War (both I and II) Day until rebuked by vets, but his explanation needs to also be rebuked. Trump said the U.S., more than any other country, won the world wars.

Of course, that flies in the face of the actual history of World War II.

On this 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, we discussed the reality of the second world war . . . how the west stalled on establishing a second front while the USSR was bearing the brunt of the war, how the Soviets reversed the German offensive in 1941-42 and then liberated Europe from the Nazis, how the Red Army killed 80 percent of the Germans killed in the war, and how the Soviet Union suffered immense losses (20-25 million killed, a million farms and factories destroyed, half the economy devastated).

  • This past week has seen a resurgence for liberal parties in other parts of the world. In Canada, Mark Carney the Liberal Party made a stunning comeback from a 20% deficit in the polls just months ago to win a narrow victory against Pierre and Poilievere and the Conservative Party. This is largely due to Donald Trump’s repeated threats that he would make Canada the U.S.A.’s “51 State.”

  • It’s the 55th anniversary of the killings at Kent State University. In a special encore episode, we’re reposting our Kent State episode from 2020.

In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who’d been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! Scott and Bob, who’s also a historian of the Vietnam War and the 1960s and has published extensively on those subjects, talk about the background to the protests, the official, violent response, the aftermath at places like Jackson State, where 2 more students were killed, and the larger context of anti-state protests and their meaning, and lessons.

  • In the latest episode, we talk about the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.

We describe the events that led to the U.S. withdrawal in 1973, and then how Hanoi began their December 1974 offensive that eventually led to the fall of the South Vietnamese government. We also talk about the chaos in Laos and Cambodia as a result of the fall of Saigon, the domestic impact on the U.S. and then the 50 year political and cultural legacy in the U.S. We end with a discussion of the film, literature and television that considers the war.

An important history in the context of current events of war in Ukraine and the Middle East, particularly Palestine, and the rise of Trump and far right politics.

  • Today's politics and culture wars are intertwined with pro wrestling. More than people realize. Since the summer of 2015 when Donald Trump came down the escalator to announce he was running for president, plenty of people, of course, have noted this relationship that he’s had with WWE owner Vince McMahon and his links to professional wrestling. In our latest, Scott talks with Jason Myles, host of This is Revolution, about his new documentary called “Kayfabe” about pro-wrestling and Trump’s politics. • Everyone's talking about tariffs . . . but do we really know what they are, how they work, what their purpose is?

Scott and Bob give backgrounder on tariffs from a historical perspective (we're not economists) and discuss the reason they are used in global economic relationships and describe some of the reasons that American founders advocated for them (hint, it's not about revenues--it's for capitalist development of industry). We also discuss the political meaning of the tariff--they're part of a dispute over trade policy between northern manufacturing and southern agriculture (the so-called Tariff of Abominations) from the early 19th century through the McKinley Tariff years. Then we described the advent of the Free Trade era and how tariffs became less important (a federal income tax replaced tariffs as a main source of revenue as the U.S. grew into an economic power--tariff revenues weren't adequate for the needs of a growing imperial power by the early 20th century--and how that began to shift after World War II. And we finished up by briefly discussing how ill-developed and damaging Trump's tariffs will be.
