STORY 4: Georgia Power plan to leave coal ash in groundwater could be upended by new EPA rule

The U.S. EPA finalized rules aimed at reducing fossil fuel power plant pollution, eliciting praise from clean energy nonprofits for addressing health risks from coal ash disposal. The regulations target greenhouse gas emissions, requiring coal plants to cut carbon emissions by 90% by 2032. Georgia Power may need to revise plans regarding coal ash disposal and faces potential compliance challenges for legacy coal ash sites. Power industry groups criticized the rules, citing concerns about job losses and reliability. Litigation is expected, especially concerning carbon emissions rules. Georgia Power, despite reducing emissions, faces scrutiny for plans to extend fossil fuel capacity. Environmental groups urge utilities to reconsider gas-dependent future amid EPA's regulatory actions.

STORY 5: Dog theft causes same emotional turmoil as losing a child

New research suggests that dog owners who experience pet theft undergo significant emotional distress, akin to losing a family member or child. The bond between owners and dogs is profound, often intensifying the grief. However, legal frameworks often treat stolen dogs as mere property, limiting support from law enforcement. The manner of theft, whether through force or burglary, exacerbates the trauma. Owners may face delays in processing grief, akin to PTSD, especially if the dog isn't recovered. This study, published in Human-Animal Interactions, underscores the need for psychological and legal support tailored to the unique grief experienced by dog owners. Further research aims to develop support tools for those affected by dog theft.

A man wanted for several robberies was killed in a confrontation with Gwinnett County Police officers on Jimmy Carter Blvd. An officer attempted a traffic stop on the suspect's red SUV in a Waffle House parking lot. The driver, wanted on outstanding warrants and suspected of robbery, initially stopped but then accelerated, shooting at the officer. Another officer in an unmarked car was fired upon as well. The pursuit continued, resulting in a collision between the suspect's vehicle and a patrol SUV. The suspect fired at the officer before being shot and killed. The officers provided aid, but the suspect died on scene. The GBI is investigating, and no injuries were reported among officers or bystanders.

STORY 3: Norcross man receives double life sentences for murdering Lawrenceville brothers

Walter Debron Hill, convicted of murdering brothers Darius Myles and Christopher Smith, received two life sentences without parole, plus 10 years. Security footage and cell phone data placed Hill near the scene. The victims were found shot in their home, with no signs of forced entry. Family members identified Hill as a possible suspect, noting his friendship with the victims. Hill initially denied involvement but was linked to the crime by shell casings found in Texas. He returned to Georgia and was arrested. Despite evidence, Hill showed no remorse. The Gwinnett County DA called the sentence justice for the tragic loss.

STORY 1: Lawrenceville Man Convicted of Murdering Two Family Members After Dispute

Bernie Ray Mack, a Lawrenceville man, was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 30 years for the murders of his wife, Bridget Pearl Brooks-Mack, and his stepson-in-law, Jeremy Roshawn Santos. The shootings occurred during a dispute in May 2022. Mack was convicted on multiple charges, including malice murder, voluntary manslaughter, felony murder, aggravated assault, and gun possession during a felony. The incident unfolded in the Harbor Bay neighborhood, where Mack shot his wife before engaging in a shootout with Jeremy Santos, ultimately killing him. The Gwinnett County District Attorney expressed condolences to the victims' families and emphasized that violence is never justified. The case involved collaboration between law enforcement agencies for investigation.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Man Arrested For Selling Vehicle With Fake VIN

Emir Mehic, a 24-year-old Lawrenceville man, was arrested for selling a vehicle with a false Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). He was charged with Theft by Deception and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. The arrest followed a report from a victim who purchased a Ford Transit van from Mehic on Facebook Marketplace, only to discover issues with the VIN when attempting to register the vehicle. Detectives confirmed the VIN was false and determined the van was stolen from Ohio. The victim assisted detectives in arranging another purchase from Mehic, leading to his arrest without incident. Gwinnett County police advise buyers to verify the seller's identity and consider obtaining a vehicle history report from approved vendors.

STORY 3: Georgians poised to secure incremental gains in mental health treatment options in 2024

State lawmakers pursued multiple proposals to build on the 2022 mental health bill, opting for smaller, targeted bills rather than a single comprehensive measure. Despite last year's setbacks, this session saw bipartisan efforts to advance mental health reforms. Several bills focused on expanding access to treatment and bolstering the behavioral health workforce. However, some measures faced challenges, such as bills hijacked for unrelated proposals and efforts to expand Medicaid, which fell short. Despite the piecemeal approach, advocates see progress in addressing mental health needs, building on the foundation laid by the 2022 law. The focus remains on methodically advancing reforms to improve mental health services statewide.

STORY 1: Two More Auto Theft Crew Members Have Been Arrested, Two Others Remain At Large

An auto theft ring in Atlanta has led to three arrests, with East Point residents Kylijah Devon Yates, Randy Daniel Martinez, and Javaris Gamble apprehended. Two other suspects, Giovanni Bell and Emmanuel Chavarria Ornelas, remain at large. The crew allegedly broke into cars across metro Atlanta, with 400 incidents reported in Gwinnett County alone. Yates was arrested in East Point, while Martinez was found in Kissimmee, Florida, with over 100 active arrest warrants. Charges include entering auto, theft, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft. Police urge anyone with information on Bell and Ornelas to contact authorities or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a cash reward.

STORY 2: Teen with incredibly rare genetic condition first in world to be cured

Thirteen-year-old Kai Xue, diagnosed with the rare WILD syndrome, was cured by a pioneering team of British doctors in a world first. Suffering from severe chylous ascites, she accumulated 28 liters of lymphatic fluid in her abdomen. Dr. Mona Mossad, along with experienced surgeons, successfully removed the excess fluid and repaired a liver leak. Kai's journey included visits to multiple hospitals and even China for treatment before finding a cure. Dr. Mossad's innovative approach, including lymphatic drainage improvement and delicate surgery to block tiny liver lymphatic vessels, led to Kai's remarkable recovery. Kai's mother, Ning Chen, expressed immense gratitude to the medical team for their exceptional care and dedication.

STORY 3: Gwinnett launches 'educational hub' to explain upcoming transit referendum

Gwinnett County has launched an "educational hub," named "It's Your Ride Gwinnett," to inform voters about its transit expansion plans ahead of an upcoming sales tax referendum. The hub offers residents information on the county's transit expansion plan through monthly videos and resources. County commissioners are expected to vote this summer to place a 30-year, 1% sales tax referendum on the November ballot to fund the expansion. The online hub aims to explain the transit plans without advocating for the referendum, navigating state laws regarding political advocacy. The expansion includes spreading microtransit service county-wide, creating a bus rapid transit route, and offering routes to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. If approved, the sales tax would replace property taxes currently funding the transit system.

Boehringer Ingelheim, based in Duluth, Georgia, is now the official animal health company partner of the Braves. The partnership aims to connect with the local community and improve animal wellbeing. Boehringer Ingelheim will engage in activities at Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta throughout the 2024 baseball season. Additionally, the partnership will support the Atlanta Braves Foundation's gameday pet adoptions, aligning with both organizations' values of community and excellence.

STORY 5: Democrats in 13th Congressional District Race Will Participate in TV Debate

The Atlanta Press Club will host a televised debate on April 28 for Democratic primary election candidates vying for Georgia's 13th Congressional District seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. David Scott. Daily Post reporter Curt Yeomans will be a panelist for the debate, to be held at Georgia Public Broadcasting in Atlanta. Livestreamed on Facebook and GPB.org at 11:15 a.m., the debate will air on Georgia Public Broadcasting at 4 p.m. on April 28 and on WABE at 5 p.m. on May 1. STORY 6: Georgia Saw 3rd Biggest Increase in High-Intensity Tornadoes Over Last 20 Years

Severe weather conditions, including tornadoes, pose significant threats to communities, with evidence suggesting that climate change may exacerbate their frequency and intensity. While tornado occurrences regularly exceed 1,000 annually in the U.S., the majority are considered light or moderate. However, high-intensity tornadoes (EF2+) are responsible for over 90% of tornado-related fatalities, injuries, and property damage despite their lower frequency. Geographical shifts in tornado occurrences over the past two decades have seen an increase in high-intensity tornadoes in the Southeast, particularly in states like Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, leading to substantial impacts on affected communities.

STORY 7: Brain breakthrough: Scientists can create brain cells that can communicate

Scientists have made a breakthrough by creating brain cells in a dish and connecting them to mimic circuits found in our brains. This advancement sheds light on how our brains function and could aid in understanding and treating neurological and psychiatric disorders. Using a technique developed by researchers at the University of Tokyo, lab-grown brain-mimicking tissues, called neural organoids, were linked via axonal bundles, resembling connections in the human brain. This method allowed for the observation of complex network development and activity synchronization between organoids, resembling connections between brain regions. The study suggests that studying lab-grown human neural circuits could enhance our understanding of brain networks and potentially lead to improved treatments for various conditions.

STORY 4: Georgia Sees 10.5% Growth in Total Housing Units Over the Past Decade

The United States grapples with a critical affordable housing shortage, underscored by a shortfall of millions of units. This predicament stems from a complex web of factors, including stringent regulations, escalating construction costs, and the enduring aftermath of the Great Recession. While regions like the Mountain West and Sun Belt have witnessed notable housing developments, areas such as West Virginia and parts of the Great Lakes region have experienced stagnation or negligible growth. Moreover, the pace of housing development does not always match up with demographic trends, posing affordability issues in certain locales. In Georgia, for instance, the number of housing units rose by 10.5% between 2012 and 2022, marginally exceeding population growth. However, this period also saw median home prices skyrocket by 157.7%. Tackling the housing shortage demands a multifaceted approach, focusing on policy reform, increased construction activity, and bolstering affordable housing initiatives.

STORY 5: PrizePicks to locate new headquarters in Atlanta

Governor Brian Kemp has officially announced that PrizePicks will establish its new headquarters in Atlanta, marking a significant $25 million investment and promising the creation of 1,000 jobs within the next seven years. Esteemed as a leading figure among North America's rapidly growing sports companies, PrizePicks has been lauded for its innovative approach and excellence in workplace culture. The new headquarters, occupying 33,000 square feet in the Star Metals Building at Midtown Atlanta, signifies a major boost to the city's innovation ecosystem. This strategic move underscores Georgia's burgeoning reputation as a technology and innovation hub, supported by a skilled workforce and robust infrastructure. The expansion of PrizePicks is poised to make a considerable economic contribution to Atlanta, reflecting the state's dedication to promoting technological innovation and employment opportunities.

STORY 6: GA to distribute $638M settlement through grant program to combat deadly opioid epidemic

Georgia is set to launch a grant program to allocate $638 million received from opioid settlement funds, dedicating $479 million to grants and distributing the remaining $159 million among Atlanta and its major counties. The grant application process begins next Monday, accompanied by workshops designed to guide applicants through the submission procedure. The state's strategy emphasizes a meticulous and impactful response to the opioid epidemic, prioritizing areas such as medication-assisted treatment, prevention initiatives, and recovery support services. Sheriff Gary Sisk has underscored the critical nature of the drug crisis and the imperative for a sincere commitment to recovery efforts. This program advocates for transparency and seeks to integrate insights from those with firsthand experience of addiction, underlining the value of their perspectives in the fight against substance abuse.

STORY 7: Virtual reality sessions could help cancer patients lessen pain: study

A recent study published by the American Cancer Society reveals that ten-minute sessions of virtual reality therapy can significantly alleviate pain in cancer patients, with effects persisting beyond the duration of the session. This innovative approach has demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction compared to traditional distraction methods, such as using an iPad. The research involved 128 adult cancer patients suffering from moderate to severe pain, who were randomly assigned to either VR or iPad therapy sessions. Findings highlighted a more pronounced decrease in pain levels among participants in the VR group, with the relief extending up to 24 hours post-session. The study advocates for further investigation into the application of VR therapy across various outpatient contexts and for different manifestations of cancer-related pain, underscoring its potential as a non-pharmacological option for managing discomfort in cancer patients.

STORY 2: Gwinnett Police: Buford Man Allegedly Used Television Cable, Knife To Kill Roommate

Nineteen-year-old Erik Ruiz Lopez from Buford is accused of strangling and fatally stabbing his roommate during a physical altercation at their north Gwinnett home. The victim's identity has not been disclosed by police, but it's confirmed they shared a bedroom. Officers responded to a call reporting trouble at the residence and found the victim's body upon arrival. Ruiz Lopez allegedly choked the victim unconscious with a TV cable before returning with a knife to stab him multiple times. Detectives have interviewed Ruiz Lopez, and the victim's identity will be released once next-of-kin are informed. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a potential reward.

STORY 3: Inmate At Buford's Phillips State Prison Charged With Building, Mailing Bombs

He purportedly built the bombs while incarcerated at a state prison in Reidsville and sent them to a federal courthouse in Anchorage, Alaska, and a Justice Department building in Washington, D.C. Charges against him include making an unregistered destructive device, mailing destructive devices, and attempted malicious use of an explosive. The case is under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Georgia Department of Corrections. Will Hinton, a 28-year-old Dacula native and a staff sergeant at Fort Moore, has qualified for the Men’s Trap competition at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Despite being behind in the trials, he managed to secure his spot by defeating 121 other shooters in Tucson, Arizona. Hinton's teammate, Rachel Tozier, also earned a spot in the Women’s Trap category. Hinton credits his mental training and determination for his success. He plans to continue training rigorously and bet on himself for a shot at the gold medal. Hinton, who began shooting at a young age, will compete with his own weapon, a 12-gauge Krieghoff K80. He intends to continue competing as long as he remains competitive and enjoys the sport.

STORY 5: U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde Wants Investigation Into Mail Delays in Georgia

U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde is demanding an investigation into mail delivery delays caused by issues at the new Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Palmetto. Clyde has called on USPS Inspector General Tammy Hull to conduct an audit, citing an increase in complaints from constituents since the facility opened. He blames USPS's poor planning for the delays, which have led to disrupted mail delivery operations and impacted residents' lives, including delayed bill payments and medicine deliveries. Clyde's demand for accountability follows similar calls from Sen. Jon Ossoff to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. He expects a preliminary response within 30 days of his letter.

STORY 6: Georgia United Credit Union Names New Chief Strategy Officer

Georgia United Credit Union has appointed Adam Marlowe as its new Chief Strategy Officer to oversee marketing, product development, and member advocacy efforts. Marlowe brings extensive experience from his previous roles at credit unions, including as Chief Operating Officer at Powerco Federal Credit Union and various positions at Georgia's Own Credit Union. With a focus on enhancing the member experience, Marlowe's strategic leadership aims to drive corporate vision and innovation at Georgia United. His appointment reflects the credit union's commitment to growth and community service.

STORY 7: State PSC members could avoid voters for years as meter runs on Georgia Power rate hikes

A federal lawsuit filed in 2020 by plaintiffs, including Brionté McCorkle of Georgia Conservation Voters, seeks to change the way public service commissioners are elected in Georgia, arguing that the current system disenfranchises Black voters. Amidst this, a proposed delay in state utility regulator elections until 2025 has sparked controversy. Critics argue this postponement denies millions of Georgia Power customers their right to elect representatives who oversee utility rates. The delay is seen as an attempt to extend current commissioners' terms, exacerbating concerns over rate increases and environmental decisions. While proponents of the delay cite the need for staggered elections for continuity, opponents, including McCorkle and former PSC candidate Patty Durand, view it as a tactic to maintain the status quo. The situation underscores broader debates over electoral fairness and utility regulation in Georgia.

STORY 1: Lawrenceville Police say Hyundai and Kia thefts are up

Lawrenceville police have issued a warning to owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models, urging increased vigilance due to a surge in thefts. The vulnerability, tied to an absent security feature in the ignition switch, affects vehicles manufactured between 2011 and 2021 that use traditional turnkey ignition systems instead of push-button starts.

In response, Kia has supplied steering wheel locks to the police department for distribution to local residents. Vehicle owners from the specified years can obtain a lock by reaching out to Capt. Salvador Ortega via email. To further safeguard their vehicles, police suggest implementing additional security measures such as installing kill switches, battery disconnects, alarms, and GPS tracking devices, and ensuring cars are parked in well-lit, secure areas.

STORY 2: Gwinnett County Public Schools Launches AI Policy Lab

Gwinnett County Public Schools, in collaboration with the EdSAFE AI Alliance, has announced the creation of an AI Policy Lab. This initiative is dedicated to fostering the safe and ethical implementation of artificial intelligence within educational settings. The lab will provide comprehensive policy recommendations alongside educational materials aimed at teachers, students, and parents, emphasizing practical applications of AI.

Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, highlighted the critical importance of instilling responsible AI practices among students to equip them adequately for future professional environments. This endeavor enhances GCPS's ongoing commitment to AI education, building on the foundation set by the AI-Future Ready pilot initiated in 2019. It also contributes to broader national discussions focused on establishing guidelines that ensure AI is used in ways that are safe, responsible, inclusive, and beneficial within the educational sphere.

STORY 3: Lilburn gets federal funds for police, Camp Creek efforts

Lilburn has successfully obtained federal funding amounting to $1.8 million through the 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act, earmarked for two pivotal projects. The allocation will be divided equally between enhancing public safety and environmental preservation efforts.

The first half of the funding supports the Tri-City Connect Program, a collaborative effort with Lawrenceville and Snellville. This initiative aims to bolster public safety by creating a video and data sharing platform. It encourages residents and businesses to voluntarily register their security cameras, facilitating quicker resolution of criminal activities by law enforcement agencies.

The remaining funds are allocated to the stabilization of Camp Creek. This project is vital for maintaining the integrity of the 4.2-mile Camp Creek Greenway Trail, a cherished community asset for recreation and nature engagement.

U.S. Representative Lucy McBath has been instrumental in securing these funds, demonstrating her dedication to advancing the welfare and safety of the community.

Executive Director Schelly Marlatt expressed profound appreciation for these honors and reiterated the organization's commitment to environmental stewardship. Among the highlighted initiatives were the Earth Day recycling event and the Great Gwinnett Wetlands Cleanup, both emblematic of the organization’s efforts to uphold Gwinnett County as an exemplar of cleanliness, sustainability, and natural beauty.

The national competition is expected to attract over 6,500 students nationwide, showcasing their talents and leadership.

A significant number of these students are from Maxwell High School of Technology, with additional participants from the Grayson Technical Education Program. SkillsUSA plays a crucial role in bridging students, educators, and industry experts, aiming to develop a highly skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of the future.

STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Say Missing Collins Hill Student Has Returned Home

Rohjae Imani Kathryn Watts, a 16-year-old from Gwinnett County who went missing last week, has safely returned home as of Monday. Last seen on March 27 after leaving Collins Hill High School and entering an Uber, Watts' disappearance prompted a search by local authorities. Gwinnett County police have not provided further details on her return.

STORY 2: Georgia Gwinnett College Hosting Solar Eclipse Viewing on April 8

Georgia Gwinnett College is hosting a public solar eclipse viewing event on April 8, led by physics assistant professors Dr. Paul Camp and Dr. Amy Turner. Starting at 1:30 p.m. outside the Daniel J. Kaufman Library and Learning Center, attendees will learn about the eclipse, which happens when the sun, moon, and Earth align, obscuring sunlight. While Georgia will not witness a total eclipse, the phenomenon can still be observed safely with necessary eye protection, such as projection methods or special binoculars. This celestial event continues a historical pattern, with the previous significant eclipse occurring on August 11, 1999.

STORY 3: Gwinnett Police To Host Drug Take Back Day On April 27

On April 27, the Gwinnett County Police Department and the DEA are hosting the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative to combat the surge in overdose deaths. This event allows safe disposal of prescription drugs at various locations across the county from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Police Headquarters, six precincts, and Coolray Field. The initiative aims to prevent accidental poisoning, overdose, abuse, and environmental harm by properly disposing of tablets, capsules, patches, and other prescription forms, excluding liquids, syringes, and sharps. No appointment is needed, and there will be no inquiries made during drop-off.

STORY 4: The GA Minority Homeownership Gap Is Slightly Smaller Than the National Average

Homeownership is central to the American dream for financial stability and wealth building and still shows racial disparities. Despite a narrowing gap, with the overall minority homeownership difference now below 22 percentage points, significant variations among racial and ethnic groups persist. Black Americans face the lowest rates of homeownership, whereas Asian and Pacific Islanders have the highest. The Midwest and Northeast experience the widest gaps, with states like North Dakota and New York seeing differences over 30 percentage points. In Georgia, the gap is -21.6 percentage points, comparing a 54.2% minority homeownership rate to a 75.8% rate among Whites. These statistics underscore the continuing struggle for equal homeownership opportunities in the U.S.

STORY 5: High-fat, low-carb keto diet shows promise in helping prevent Alzheimer’s

Recent studies suggest the ketogenic diet, known for its low carbohydrate and high fat regimen, could offer preventive measures against Alzheimer's disease. This diet elevates beta-hydroxybutyrate levels, a molecule linked to stronger memory pathways in brain studies, especially noted in mice research. The presence of BHB is believed to slow down the progression of mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer's, by enhancing synaptic connections related to memory functions. Interestingly, the diet appears to have a more significant impact on females, particularly those with a higher Alzheimer's risk. Although not a cure, the ketogenic diet and BHB present an intriguing avenue for future research aimed at healthy aging and the fight against neurodegenerative conditions.

STORY 6: State PSC poised to hear Georgia Power’s plan to increase fossil fuel use

Environmental advocates and consumer groups are raising alarms over Georgia Power's proposal to significantly increase its reliance on fossil fuels. The plan, which emerged from a preliminary deal with the Public Service Commission staff, aims to meet surging demand from industrial sectors, particularly data centers. Critics denounce the move as a step back from renewable energy commitments, highlighting concerns over potential hikes in electricity rates and environmental degradation. The strategy includes constructing new natural gas and oil power plants alongside solar battery storage solutions. With the PSC's decision looming on April 16, there is a growing push for public engagement and critical examination of how this expansion could affect Georgia's economic and ecological future.

STORY 7: Snoring and high blood pressure can simply be prevented with this

A new study reveals a promising treatment for obstructive sleep apnea through a nasal spray containing potassium channel blockers. In trials, this spray significantly reduced airway collapses during sleep in 70% of participants, offering a potential alternative for those who struggle with traditional OSA treatments like CPAP machines. The spray enhances muscle activity in the throat, helping to keep the airway open. Published in The Journal of Heart and Circulatory Physiology, this research involved a blind trial with ten OSA patients, highlighting the spray's effectiveness in improving sleep quality and reducing OSA symptoms. This breakthrough could lead to more accessible and tolerable treatment options for OSA sufferers.

STORY 1: Two Teens Arrested After Illegal Street Race In Gwinnett

Two teens were arrested for fleeing from an illegal street racing event in Gwinnett, striking patrol cars in the process. John Anthony Pritchett, 19, faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, kidnapping, and possession of firearms during felonies. Dryan Dradarius Vereen, 18, faces obstruction charges. The incident occurred on March 23, with officers responding to gunshots and people fleeing the scene. Pritchett's stolen Dodge Charger collided with a patrol car, leading to a chase and eventual crash. Firearms were found in the vehicle, reported stolen from DeKalb County. Two female passengers claimed they were unable to exit the vehicle. Fortunately, no officers were injured.

STORY 2: Corps of Engineers raising fees at its Lake Lanier parks, boat launches

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mobile District announced a fee increase for using corps-run parks and boat ramps at Lake Lanier. Day use and boat launching fees will rise from $5 to $8 this summer. This adjustment aims to sustain recreational facilities' quality and is part of a broader initiative across all USACE-managed properties. The increase applies specifically to corps-run facilities and excludes those managed by other entities like the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. While the fee hike was approved last year, its implementation was postponed to aid local communities recovering from the pandemic's economic impact. The Corps assures visitors of continued commitment to quality recreation and facility maintenance, inviting inquiries about the fee adjustment.

STORY 3: Singleton Road Residents Getting Their Own Pocket Park, Greenway Trail

Gwinnett County officials are addressing a lack of nearby recreational options for residents near Indian Trail-Lilburn Road by breaking ground on Singleton Park and a greenway trail. The park, funded by various sources including sales tax funds and grants, aims to provide accessible green space and play amenities. Expected to open in late 2025, it will feature a playground, restroom, and picnic areas. The three-quarter-mile greenway trail will connect Singleton and Dickens Roads, eventually linking to Bryson Park as part of the county's broader greenway trails plan. While promoting walkability, officials also highlight accessibility via public transit. Residents anticipate the park's convenience and benefits, particularly for families in the area lacking outdoor play options.

STORY 4: Bill banning puberty blockers for minors languishes alongside other culture war measures

During the 2024 Legislative session, two bills concerning transgender issues failed to pass the Georgia House. The bills aimed to restrict transgender children's access to sports teams, restrooms, and puberty-blocking drugs. Despite passing the Senate, the House did not vote on these measures. The bills reflected broader cultural divides, with Republicans supporting them and Democrats opposing. House Speaker Jon Burns emphasized the importance of timing and prioritization in addressing social issues. Proponents of the bills, like Sen. Ben Watson, argued that banning puberty blockers would prevent irreversible decisions for minors. However, opponents, including transgender advocates, highlighted the positive impact of such treatments on mental health and identity affirmation. Another bill addressing student athletes' mental health was also stalled, leaving room for potential reconsideration in future sessions.

STORY 5: Immigration crackdown, election law changes go to the governor as other hot-button proposals fizzle

The 2024 Legislative session concluded with a flurry of activity, including the failure of several contentious bills. Despite passing the Senate, bills banning puberty blockers for minors and legalizing sports betting did not receive House approval. The last-minute session also saw the passage of bills related to road renaming and property tax relief. However, controversial measures such as an election overhaul and immigration enforcement bills were approved. Additionally, a proposal for a statue honoring Justice Clarence Thomas and efforts to protect the Okefenokee Swamp from mining faced setbacks. While the session ended without certain bills progressing, discussions on key issues, such as Medicaid expansion and environmental protection, are expected to continue.

STORY 6: Targeting immune cells offers hope for preventing breast cancer

Researchers at Cambridge University have identified a new pathway for preventing breast cancer by targeting immune cell exhaustion in healthy women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations. These mutations increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The study found that immune cells in breast tissue of these women show signs of malfunction, unable to clear out damaged cells that could develop into cancer. This discovery could lead to using existing immunotherapy drugs as early intervention to prevent breast cancer, offering an alternative to risk-reducing surgery. The research, published in Nature Genetics, suggests a potential preventative treatment accessible to all women.

STORY 7: Scientists bust myth that eggs are bad for your heart

A new study debunks the myth that eggs are bad for heart health, suggesting concerns about cholesterol levels are unnecessary. The PROSPERITY trial involved 140 patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease who consumed 12 or more fortified eggs weekly. Results showed no adverse effects on blood cholesterol, with reductions in LDL cholesterol and other heart health markers observed in the fortified egg group. Researchers emphasize that eggs' bad reputation may stem from confusion about egg yolk cholesterol and suggest examining overall dietary habits. They encourage heart disease patients to discuss heart-healthy diets with their doctors.

STORY 1: Lawrenceville Father Was Driving Over 100 MPH In Collision That Killed 3

Aaron Vaughn, a Lawrenceville man, faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder and vehicular homicide, following a collision on March 10 that killed three people, including his 5-year-old daughter. Gwinnett police reported that Vaughn was driving his Chevrolet Camaro at over 100 mph, exceeding the 45-mph speed limit, when he crashed into a BMW in Peachtree Corners. The BMW's occupants, Armas Harding and Laura Rueda, died at the scene. Vaughn's daughter, Aura Camarono, also died, while a 6-year-old in the backseat survived. Both children were unrestrained by child safety seats as required by Georgia law. Vaughn faces additional charges, including cruelty to children and reckless driving.

STORY 2: Tucker Man Dead In Snellville After Traffic Stop Leads To Officer-Involved Shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is probing an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of Rashawn Johnson in Snellville. The incident unfolded during a traffic stop at around 4 a.m. on U.S. Highway 78. Snellville Police stated that Johnson, when ordered out of his car for arrest, brandished a handgun and pointed it at his head. Despite attempts to de-escalate, Johnson allegedly fired his weapon, prompting officers to return fire, resulting in his death. GBI revealed Johnson was holding a phone initially, with the gun concealed. The agency detailed the events leading to the shooting, indicating Johnson's non-compliance with officer commands. Autopsy results are pending, and GBI will submit its findings to the Gwinnett District Attorney's Office.

STORY 3: Police: Vandals Damaged Construction Equipment At Rowen Site

Authorities are on the lookout for two individuals suspected of causing havoc at the Rowen knowledge community construction site on St. Patrick's Day. The suspects, described as young white males with slim physiques, reportedly engaged in several destructive acts including damaging windshield wipers, defacing equipment with spray paint, tampering with the seat of a construction vehicle, and stealing two SIM cards from a security camera setup.

Rowen is envisioned as a groundbreaking development aimed at fostering innovation across agriculture, medicine, and environmental sciences, with aspirations to generate upwards of 100,000 job opportunities. However, the realization of this vision is expected to span several decades.

Law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the culprits. They encourage anyone with pertinent information to reach out to detectives or to submit tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers, noting that information leading to an arrest and indictment may be eligible for a financial reward.

STORY 4: VA Regional Office renamed for Johnny Isakson

The Atlanta Veterans Affairs Regional Office was renamed in honor of the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson during a ceremony in Decatur. Isakson, who passed away in 2021, was renowned for his bipartisan approach and commitment to veterans' affairs. Senator Jon Ossoff highlighted Isakson's values, work ethic, and dedication to national interests. Isakson's bipartisan efforts, such as hosting annual bipartisan barbecues, aimed to foster cooperation in the Senate. Ossoff sponsored the bill renaming the VA office after Isakson, which passed in 2022, reflecting Isakson's enduring legacy in serving the nation and its veterans.

STORY 5: Police Chase Stolen Construction Vehicle Around Norcross Area

Eddie Sanchez, a former employee from Delaware, stole a 75,000-pound construction vehicle from a waste management company in the Norcross area, a place where he had been previously terminated. This set off a police chase through Norcross's streets, drawing the attention and resources of several law enforcement agencies. Throughout the pursuit, Sanchez navigated the hefty vehicle with erratic and unpredictable movements, weaving through heavy traffic and putting countless drivers at risk.

The chase reached its climax when law enforcement strategically deployed another front loader alongside a garbage truck to intercept and halt the stolen vehicle. This maneuver successfully flipped the construction vehicle onto its side, bringing the chaotic chase to an end approximately five miles from where the theft initially occurred.

Sanchez was arrested and now faces a slew of charges, including criminal trespass, theft, fleeing from police, reckless driving, and obstruction. Remarkably, the incident ended without any reported injuries or significant property damage.

STORY 6: 2 in 3 teens worry about how sick days may impact grades

A recent study revealed that two-thirds of parents are concerned about their teens missing school due to illness impacting their grades. Many parents struggle with deciding if their child should stay home when they're not feeling well, considering factors like symptoms, contagiousness, and school attendance policies. The study, conducted by researchers at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health, surveyed 1,300 parents of children aged 11 to 18. Parents are more likely to keep kids home just to be safe, while others may send them to school hoping for the best. Sarah Clark, the study's lead author, recommends parents ask more questions to understand their child's request for a sick day, including considering mental health concerns. She suggests mental health days could help teens navigate social stressors and build resilience. However, parents of children with chronic medical conditions face challenges with school policies, and discussions with school administrators and healthcare providers may be necessary to ensure flexibility and support for these students.

STORY 7: Georgia House panel set to vote whether to create a path for legalized online sports betting

The House Higher Education Committee in Georgia is set to vote on sports betting legislation before the legislative session ends on Thursday. The proposed bill would establish a framework for online sports gambling and a constitutional amendment referendum for voters to decide on legalizing sports betting. Debate within the committee has centered on how revenue from sports gambling should be allocated, with discussions on funding education programs, including pre-K and historically Black colleges and universities. Proposed amendments include increasing the state's tax revenue from sports betting and determining how to prioritize funding allocations. The legislation aims to regulate the online sports betting industry while generating revenue for educational initiatives, with supporters emphasizing the importance of gauging public interest through a constitutional referendum.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.

STORY 5: Study says wild fish healthier for you than farmed salmon

A recent study featured in Nature Food indicates that consuming wild fish varieties such as mackerel, herring, and anchovies may offer more health benefits than farmed salmon. The research scrutinizes the nutrient dynamics from wild fish, utilized as feed, to the farmed salmon, revealing a significant nutrient depletion in the aquaculture process. According to the findings, wild fish used in salmon feed exhibit higher levels of crucial nutrients including calcium, iodine, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, and vitamin A compared to the nutrient profile of farmed salmon fillets.

The study underscores the importance of diversifying our seafood consumption towards a broader range of wild fish species. This approach not only promises an enhanced intake of essential dietary nutrients but also aims to alleviate the pressure on overexploited fish stocks. Additionally, the researchers propose strategies to increase feed efficiency and the adoption of sustainable practices, such as the use of fishery by-products, to foster the industry's sustainable development.

STORY 1: Four People Accused of Smuggling Drugs Into Gwinnett County Jail

Four individuals, including two inmates of the Gwinnett County Jail, have been implicated in a scheme to smuggle drugs into the facility. The operation came to light following the discovery of methamphetamine during a standard cell inspection. The subsequent investigation by the Jail Intelligence Unit led to the uncovering of 10 small packets of methamphetamine, with a total weight of six grams, concealed within the jail.

Inmates David Isaias Wilson and Salathiel McKinney are believed to have coordinated the smuggling operation from inside the jail, utilizing external contacts. Willis McFadden, a truck driver, is accused of physically transporting the drugs onto jail premises for McKinney, while Dante Thompson is alleged to have acted as an intermediary, facilitating communication between McFadden and Wilson.

The four individuals now face a combined total of 11 felony charges in connection with the drug smuggling operation.

STORY 4: Suit alleging suppression of free speech met with skepticism at U.S. Supreme Court

Protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court as it reviewed allegations of government collusion with social media firms to restrict free speech. During the proceedings, justices displayed skepticism towards the lawsuit's foundations. The Biden administration argued against any First Amendment breaches, emphasizing the absence of evidence supporting claims of unconstitutional actions.

The lawsuit, brought forward by parties from Missouri and Louisiana alongside individual complainants, suggests that their online expressions were curtailed due to governmental influence. The administration posited that any content moderation was the result of social media platforms enforcing their own policies independently.

The justices explored the direct impact of alleged government involvement on the plaintiffs and considered the potential implications for public safety. A decision is anticipated, with the plaintiff’s expressing optimism regarding the outcome.

STORY 5: Athens Bookshop Files Federal Lawsuit Against Gwinnett Sheriff

Avid Bookshop, an independent bookstore located in Athens, has initiated a federal lawsuit against Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor and Jail Commander Ben Haynes. The legal action arises from the rejection of books ordered for an inmate, which Avid attributes to a policy that only allows purchases from "authorized retailers," effectively excluding small, local bookstores.

This policy, according to Avid, infringes upon inmates' First Amendment rights and amounts to government censorship. The situation unfolded after Avid Bookshop's attempts to deliver books to an inmate were denied, even though the shipments adhered to the required packaging standards. The Sheriff's Office has defended its policy by highlighting concerns over potential contraband and currently restricts book shipments to those sourced from Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Avid's legal representatives have criticized the policy as both vague and unconstitutional, arguing it unduly restricts inmates' access to a wider range of reading materials. While the Sheriff's Office maintains that the policy is a measure to ensure safety within the facility, it has chosen not to comment further due to the ongoing litigation.

STORY 4: Inmate guilty of pandemic fraud sent back to prison

Isaac Camon, a Valdosta resident serving a federal prison sentence for drug trafficking and gun convictions, received an additional 36-month prison term for wire fraud related to illegally obtaining money from a pandemic unemployment program. U.S. District Judge Tilman E. Self III sentenced Camon to a total of 72 months in prison, with three years of supervised release. Camon falsely claimed unemployment benefits while serving time in prison. He filed a fraudulent claim, asserting employment with non-existent companies. Camon's intended fraud loss amounted to $19,452, with restitution of $16,322 owed to the Georgia Department of Labor. The FBI and other agencies investigated the case, emphasizing the pursuit of justice against COVID-19 related fraud. Reporting attempted fraud involving COVID-19 is encouraged through the Department of Justice's National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline.

STORY 5: Georgia senators back bill to help teachers pay for classroom supplies

State lawmakers in Georgia are proposing a solution to address the problem of low-paid teachers having to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets: a centralized online purchasing system. Senate Bill 464, which passed the Senate with a 52-1 vote, aims to establish this system under the oversight of state School Superintendent Richard Woods. The bill also includes provisions related to statewide literacy testing. Some teachers spend over $1,000 annually on supplies, and while Governor Brian Kemp has offered grants for supplies, the need remains significant. The proposed system aims to alleviate this burden by providing funding for teachers to purchase necessary supplies. While metro Atlanta school districts do allocate funding for supplies, additional state support is welcomed to further assist teachers and students.
