Welcome to season 17 of Harmonious World.

I hope that 2024 is a happy and healthy year for you all so far. Some of my guests and listeners are in parts of the world where that probably seems impossible, and I really hope that we see some progress in seeing a return to sanity and kindness everywhere.

For those of you who don’t know who I am, my name is Hilary Seabrook and I’m a writer, podcaster and musician (with a little teaching thrown in).

You can find out more about me on my blog - there’s also lots of album and gig reviews

Season 16 was a great one, and you can see a summary of it on my blog. In fact, you can see summaries of all 16 seasons on my blog, so it’s easier to catch up with any of the episodes you may have missed.

Season 17 is starting with my first episode in front of a live audience - TONIGHT!

I have also been using my theme tune, which you can hear now and was composed and performed by Joe English.

There are some amazing interviews already in the bag for the summer and I hope you enjoy listening to them every week . If you want to know in advance who I’m chatting with, you’ll need to subscribe! Another subscriber bonus is a cute key ring: there’s more merchandise on the way.

For now, please remember my reason for starting this podcast. In the words of the great Quincy Jones: “Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if everyone shared a little of what they’re good at.”

Vocalist Cliff Beach released You Showed Me The Way earlier this year, paying tribute to the great American songbook, inspired by Ella Fitzgerald. He joins me here to chat about the album and beautiful original track - The Gift of the Blues - which features a stunning baritone sax line.

Thanks to Cliff for allowing me to play extracts from You Showed Me The Way

This is my second chat with pianist and composer Nicole Brancato and this one was in a (noisy) coffee shop in central London. It was great to chat with Nicole in person and find out more about the music she makes.

Alongside the conversation, you can hear extracts from High Voltage Wires, the single released late in 2023 by Nicole and her colleague Teagan Faran as part of their 'Persephone and the Phoenix' project.

It was such a pleasure to chat with Nicole, thanks to an introduction from our mutual friend, composer William Susman.

Join me in conversation with renowned International jazz guitarist Rob Luft - the first episode recorded live in front of an audience.

I've recorded episodes with Rob before and it's fantastic that he can be my first guest in front of a live audience here in Hitchin. Rob is a truly international musician and he'll be bringing his guitar along. The evening will be a great opportunity for people to see how a podcast episode is recorded and hear Rob's story alongside some of his music.

Happy fourth anniversary to Harmonious World - four years of chatting with musicians and connecting with listeners around the world.

For this special episode, Lois Deloatch and I chatted online, but I'm hoping to head across to the United States to meet her and other musicians in person. It was a really inspirational conversation that covered her new album - Love Always - but also life, music and the world.

Love Always is a wonderful album that crosses genres and includes Lois's versions of Amazing Grace and Lift Every Voice and Sing, as well as wonderful original tracks.

Thank you to Lois for allowing me to share tasters of tracks from Love Always alongside our conversation.

I sat with pianist and composer Bill Laurance in his studio in South London to discuss his new album with The Untold Orchestra - Bloom. Out now on ACT Music, this is a fascinating work of this classically-trained and virtuoso member of Snarky Puppy.

Bill's work combines quasi-classical composition, using the orchestra as a rhythm section in places, and his wonderful improvisation, and our conversation takes us all around Bloom, lockdown and life as a Snarky Puppy.

Thank you to Bill for allowing me to share tasters of tracks from Bloom alongside our conversation.

Drummer Clark Tracey has a collaborative soul and he has brought his quintet to work with up and coming singer Emily Masser - he explains why in this conversation.

I was excited when I was granted an interview with Darius Brubeck but it rapidly became clear that there was so much more to talk about than his talented father, probably one of the most famous jazz musicians in the world.

A new film, coming to a screen near you soon, Playing the Changes - Tracking Darius Brubeck shows Dave Brubeck's eldest son as he transforms jazz education in South Africa and the global social impact of jazz.

Alongside the film is Darius's autobiography - co-written with his wife Catherine - Playing the Changes: Jazz at an African University and on the Road. The book is a fascinating read for anyone with a passing interest in the history of jazz in our times, and how South Africa has dealt with its cultural significance and incredible musicians.

Apart from anything else, the book and the film together tell an incredible story of people sharing what they are good at and it was a real honour to talk to Darius.

Thank you to Darius for also sharing tracks from the newly re-mastered and re-issued album by The Jazzanians We Have Waited Too Long and I hope you enjoy listening to some clips from tracks from this fabulous 1988 sample of South African jazz, as encouraged and promoted by Darius and Catherine Brubeck.

The latest episode of Harmonious World takes me (virtually) to Croatia. Thanks to an introduction from previous guest William Susman, I chatted with Iva Ljubicic Lukic from the band Glazbene staze.

The band's new album is Pierrot Project Op 1 and brings a real introduction to the rare pierrot ensemble. Please take some time to listen to this music from Croatia that crosses all bounds of genre.

If you like jazz, you should get along to Watford Jazz Festival, 12-19 May 2024.

If you don't know much about jazz (yet), do the same.

I had a chat with founder and festival director Chris Newstead, who ran through all the delights on offer this year, so if you can, you should pop along to see some of the great acts appearing in Watford.

The Harmonious World theme tune you can hear at the start and end of our conversation was composed and performed by pianist Joe English.

This is my second episode with Paul Edis (the first is here), and this time he's joined by sax player Vasilis Xenopoulos to discuss their forthcoming quartet album Feels Like Home.

This album reminds me of the ethos behind Harmonious World itself, in that it's about all of us working to try to make the world a better place - no matter where we call home.

I hope you enjoy our conversation, including the extra section at the front where Paul and I catch up about the impact of lockdown, which can sometimes seem so unreal now.
