    They talk about character being on display when your backs are against the wall. Well, after last week’s final quarter against Port Adelaide, the Hawks collective back was against the wall today., and they showed exactly what they are made of.

    * Maturity of performance coming out of the loss to Port;

    * Pushing back against a couple of strong Brisbane challenges;

    * A forward line functioning without Mitch Lewis;

    This should have been the podcast where the lid well and truly came off. Unfortunately the Hawks slowed to a stop in the last quarter and the Power surged to victory, breaking Hawk hearts in the process.

    If you can bear it, Danny Prins and Darren Levin look back dejectedly but with hope at the 1 point loss to Port Adelaide and touch on:

    * The Hawks becoming first quarter specialists;

    * A first half full of so much promise but a last quarter to forget;

    * Who’s or what is actually to blame and why are some Hawks fans coming for Sam Mitchell?;

    * The form of Will Day and Lloyd Meek;

    * Performances of some young Hawks including Calsher Dear, Massimo D’Ambrosio, Connor Macdonald, and Cam Mackenzie;

    * How this game can be looked at as a disgraceful loss or as a step in the right direction';

    * And a lot more…

    Two wins in three weeks, who even are these Hawks? The Insiders put a bow on the win over the Bulldogs while looking forward to another potentially winnable matchup against the Saints in Tasmania.

    * Lloyd Meek and his continued impact and growth;

    * The leadership and courage displayed by James Sicily;

    * RED TIME GOALS

    That’s two wins from our last three games… and suddenly things are nowhere near as bad as they seemed a few weeks back.

    And what a fun day it was watching some of our young kids grow before our eyes, with some of our elder statesmen really stepping up.

    So there was no better place to record our review pod than with a nice cold bevvy at the bar inside Marvel Stadium. Listen to Danny Prins and Andrew Weiss as they take you through the highs and lows from the win against the dogs including:

    * Panic in the stands three minutes in;

    * The incredible pressure applied in the contest all day;

    * Our rolling zone and solid defensive structure;

    * Lloyd, Calsher, Jarman and Dylan;

    * The captain standing up after a horrific looking injury earlier;

    * And so much more - most of it discussed while smiling.

    A tough day at the office for Sam Mitchell’s men on Sunday afternoon. The effort was there from the outset, but the execution was missing for large parts. Danny Prins was joined by Andrew Weiss and Darren Levin to discuss the major talking points from the game:

    * A first quarter full of intent but not a lot else;

    * The Hawks inability to absorb pressure and execute skills;

    * Jack Scrimshaw and Sam Mitchell;

    * Experienced players and their leadership, or lack thereof;

    * Another positive Cam Mackenzie experience;

    * The importance of patience and perspective when assessing the list for the now and for the long term;

    * The disfunction of Hawthorn’s forward line;

    * Buddy’s return;

    * Plenty more…

    Host Ashley Browne was joined by Andrew Weiss, Brad Klibansky and Mick Cowan for some final thoughts on Sunday’s glorious win against North Melbourne, plus a robust discussion on:

    * The players who impressed;

    * Our forward line structure;

    * Players coming back from injury;

    * Box Hill and the role they will play this season;

    * Buddy’s return on Sunday;

    * How we will match up against the Swans this weekend;

    “I don’t think I share Brad’s optimism on that” is a line that no follower of the Hawks Insiders would have ever thought they would hear come from Darren Levin’s mouth but here we are. If nothing else, this podcast is worth listening to in order to find out the why behind that statement.

    Danny, Darren and Brad jumped on to record their immediate thoughts post Hawthorn’s first win of the season against a very ordinary North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

    The Insiders discussed the match at length, with the overall tone of positivity a nice change from the previous few weeks.

    * A phenomenal second quarter full of dash and dare;

    * Jack Ginnivan and his impact on Hawthorn’s forward line;

    * The performance of an under fire Connor Macdonald, a returning Harry Morrison and the under pressure Jai Newcombe and Conor Nash;

    * A bit of ‘winding back the clock’ from Jack Gunston and how his presence as much as his performance helped Mabior Chol;

    * The excitement and class on display from Cam Mackenzie;

    * Sam Frost, Jack Scrimshaw and Josh Weddle. Reliable and uncompromising defending;

    * Plenty more…

    No Hawk has ever booted more goals in a single game than Jason Dunstall's incredible 17-goal haul against Richmond in Round 7, 1992.

    As a tribute to this week’s announcement of Dunstall’s elevation as an AFL Legend, we take you back to when we he joined us on the Golden Years to recount this historic performance.

    Many would argue such a feat will never be repeated in modern football, so why not reminisce until your heart's content.

    Legend.

    Where do we start. Saturday nights debacle on the Gold Coast is one of those nights you wish you could forget, but one that sticks with you like a bad dream.

    Danny Prins was joined by Nat Martin to dive into the match, at times two footed, and try to get an understanding of where the Hawks are at coming out of such a poor performance.

    The discussion was free-flowing and centred around:

    * How the Hawks managed to find themselves both still in the game, and completely outplayed all the way to half time;

    * The midfield and their inability to stem the flow of Suns players pumping the ball into Hawthorn’s defensive 50;

    * The unfair ask on some of the members of our defensive group, and how they’re standing up to the task as best as can be expected;

    * Finn being a positive;

    * Hawthorn’s forward line and the limited chances they had, but how the forward pressure was non-existent;

    * The changes that need to be made before the must-win game against North Melbourne on Sunday ;

    * Where the Hawks go from here;

    * and plenty more…

    Andrew Weiss intercepted a few early leavers at Gold Coast’s People First Stadium to get their thoughts on a disappointing 53-point loss.

    * Were there any positives?

    * What went wrong?

    * Can we sort things out in time for North Melbourne next week?

    * What did they make of Finn Magginness’ performance?

    * Who needs to go back to Box Hill?

    Listen as the brown and gold faithful react to another big loss against the Gold Coast Suns. Oh, and it’s probably a good time to mention there’s a bit of a language warning (to put it mildly) on this one.

    As frustrating as the final result was against Collingwood, the settling of dust combined with the ability to talk about through it in our recap pod has proven to be the perfect combination of therapy.

    Nearly 24-hours after our thrilling comeback against the Pies, Darren and Brad came together to discuss:

    * The first half;

    * The reality of being a really young side;

    * Stopping the rot - another game where we struggled to stop the run-ons;

    * Second half success;

    * Blake Hardwick up forward;

    * Karl Amon’s second half improvement;

    * The performances of Lloyd Meek, Max Ramsden, Finn Maginness, Connor Nash and Henry Hustwaite;

    As the dust settles on another weekend of football, and another Hawthorn loss, it’s easy to get discouraged. The positive is the Hawks were definitely better against the Cats in Round 3 than they were against the Demons in Round 2, but those worrying run on and opposition goal avalanches keep on rearing their ugly head.

    Taking 24 hours to allow emotions to settle and voices to heal, Danny was joined by Darren and Andrew to chat all things Easter Monday football.

    * A first quarter to forget;

    * A second quarter to remember;

    * Turnovers and errors at the wrong time and how ruthlessly they were punished;

    * The excitement of Cam Mackenzie and Nick Watson, and the disappointing news on Watson’s injury;

    * James Worpel, his mammoth game and fantastic start to the season;

    * Umpiring, Jack Ginnivan and consistency;

    * A look ahead to Gather Round and the possibility of the Hawks first win for 2024;

    * Plus so much more…

    Well, it finally happened. During Wednesday night’s Safe Space on X/Twitter we put the Demons Dee-molition to bed.

    Host Ashley Browne was joined by Darren Levin, (not-so) ‘Angry’ Brad Klibansky, and friend of Hawks Insiders/voice of reason Mick Cowan for some final thoughts on Saturday’s disappointing loss to Melbourne, plus a robust discussion on:

    * The issues Hawthorn needs to address;

    * Box Hill’s resounding victory against Casey;

    * The upcoming selection headaches;

    * The new line of Mitchell & Ness merch;

    * Whether $10 is too much to tip into Tassie;

    * Ruining Tom Hawkins’ 300th;

    * The changes for the upcoming Easter Monday clash against Geelong.

    It was coming. It was always coming.

    This is the first in a new series from the Hawks Insiders where we finally allow Brad to be his true self.

    While this episode of anger is free for everyone to enjoy, this new series is one which will be behind a paywall going forward, so if you haven’t already, consider subscribing to the Hawks Insiders for this kind of exclusive content.

    Against our better judgement, the Insiders gave Brad free reign in the recording studio and we allowed him to take the filters off.

    It’s going to be passionate.

    It’s going to be pessimistic.

    It’s going to be angry.

    We can’t even promise that it will be coherent, but we can promise that we’ll give you the opportunity to respond.

    So tell us what you think, Hawks fans. Do you think Brad is on the money with his take this week or is he wide of the mark? What are you angry about? Hit us up in the comments.

    There’ll be times this year when our post match pods feel like therapy sessions — and today was one of them.

    In the hours following our 55-point loss to Melbourne, Andrew Weiss, Darren Levin and ‘Angry’ Brad Klibansky came off the long regrouped on a demoralising loss to a team that’s had the wood over us since 2018.

    * Did they find any positives?

    * Have we actually improved on last year?

    * Are Melbourne just that good?

    * What was Sammy thinking in that first quarter?

    * Should we be worried about the form of Mitch Lewis and Jai Newcombe yet?

    * What players can we bring in to make a difference?

    * Have some players hit a ceiling?

    * Should Finn be dropped if he doesn’t have an obvious tag?

    * Can we lick our wounds in time for Easter Monday and the Cats?

    * Are we bound for 0-5?

    We hope you find listening to this pod as cathartic as we did recording it, so be sure to drop a comment through Substack or on socials to let us know what you think.Our full post match recap will drop on Monday, featuring observations, highlights, GIFs galore, and everything you need to know from a game we’d rather forget.

    Hawks fans took what they wanted to from Saturday’s loss to the Bombers, and it was no different for us at Hawks Insiders.

    Some of us thought the Hawks were a genuine chance at a win, despite being smashed in the clearances and missing gettable shots at goal. Others felt that Hawthorn’s periods of dominance were fleeting, and the Bombers were the far better side.

    In this weeks Safe Space, the full Insiders crew, Danny, Darren, Brad, Ash, Andrew and Simon reflected on the Round 1 loss, what it means in and of itself, and what it means within the context of the season. The team chatted about:

    * Reflections on the Hawks Insider Live Panel Show last Wednesday;

    * The positives as well as the negatives of the Round 1 result;

    * xS in AFL and why it’s important to consider within the wider context of the season;

    * The debutants and their impressive first up efforts in brown and gold;

    * The James Sicily incident, the perceived Sicily Tax and a surprise positive outcome;

    * 70,000 members and Jack Ginnivan breaking the news;

    * Potential issues as we look forward to the Round 2 matchup against the Demons;

    * and so so so much more…
